Hey guys,

I just joined this forum and the information here and the community is great!

I bought a condo that has an existing BeoSystem 5, BeoLab3 speakers, integrated wall speakers, as well as the IR eyes all over the place.  The sound quality is AMAZING however the system doesn't work very well for my needs.

Here is what I am trying to accomplish:

1- It's must for me to be able to stream from Spotify and currently the system doesn't allow it

2- It's a BIG plus to be able to integrate it w/ my Alexa (Amazon Echo)

3- Integrate the sound system w/ my existing Samsung TV (Not B&O)

The B&O rep who I worked with recommended me to upgrade my system (5k+) or switch to Sonos.  Sonos is great but I don't think the quality is near what I am getting today w/ B&O so are there any experts here who could recommend some hacks or solutions to get at least (1) working before I sell the system and downgrade to Sonos?

Get a B&O Beoplay s8 hub to connect some third party streamer like chromecast or Apple tv via lossless optical to your BL3.

More expensive is a B&O moment but that thing seems very buggy for what is basically a posh Android tablet with crappy alpha software (for now read relevant forum posts and decide).

If i read correct, you have multiple pairs of speaker. Do you know how the wallspeaker are connected to the Beosound 5? Are they Beolab 15? If you dont know posting a picture might help. Can yiu describe your setup a bit more, multiple rooms or just multiple speaker pair in same room for different zones?

Do you expect to use spotify Connect where you select the individual speaker or would it be OK to just stream to one device and distribute to all rooms in sync?

I have a simple setup with Beolab 3, Essence and A6 and that works beautiful with Spotify connect. PRoblem is it will not distribute, so each speaker pair will need its own spotify connect receiver nd with your wall setup that might be tricky.

Just connecting a chromecast to the line in of the existing Beosound could do, but you would not get independent sound in the different rooms.

For your TV, do yiu use an Apple TV or the built in Smart TV?

Cheers

JK

Hi folks,

Appreciate the fast responses.

I have a BeoSound5 that is connected to a BeoMaster and BeoLabs 3 speakers.  I also have integrated wall speakers throughout the house as well as eyes in every room.

Looking at the forum, it seems that the chromecast may be the cheaper solution but I don't see where I can plug it in.  You mentioned that there's lin to the BeoSound?  I cannot find that at all.   See the back of my Beo master:

What am I missing?

I hope I don't need to buy the B&O S8 to do that cz that's a pricey piece I would need to add.

Answers to your questions:

Do you expect to use spotify Connect where you select the individual speaker or would it be OK to just stream to one device and distribute to all rooms in sync?

- it would be okay

Regarding your Essence, can you integrate that with the existing BeoSound5 system and existing eyes? http://imgur.com/a/T9gWD

What am I missing?

I see a line in in the 1st but I also see a SPDIF in the 2nd photo.

Let me try to find a BeoSound/master5 PDF.

If you love getting technical look at beointegration.com

Sorry my mistake - it's a line out. The spdif is also meant for output rather than receiving input from the ChromeCast.

Here's the manual page I found.

This a very comprehensive manual of very setups and next steps.

Look for a setup that approximates yours to see what alternative paths are open for you.

Guys thanks everyone who helped with this.. I can't believe that one week ago , I was about to get rid of my system due to a sales guy willing to share wrong information in order to make me upgrade.

I ended up getting the Chromecast Audio and connect it to a Behringer Model ufo202 which connects to one of the spare USBs in the back of the BeoMaster.  Works like a charm and I cannot tell any difference in sound quality (so hoping there's no degradation in performance).

The next steps are:

- Figure out a way to integrate my system w/ Alexa (Amazon's Echo) - A Must

- Figure out a way to integrate my system w/ my TV - nice to have

- Figure out a way to integrate my system w/ my TV - nice to have

1: Connect an Echo Dot to the Behringert instead of the Chromecast Audio.

2: Do have a closer look at the 'Beoplay S8 hub'.

Also, if you add a BeoLink Gateway to your system, you can control your B&O by Echo through IFTTT macros. You can turn the system on and off, select sources, and even play specific net radio stations, albums, and songs that you pin to "favorites" on your BeoSound 5.

BeoSound 5

plus points;

lovely build quality and very tactile

negative points;

the WORST interface

sound quality from aux inputs from usb, just terrible.

A total embarrassment from a once proud brand.

Yes, i own a BeoSound 5 and love the interface !! Big Smile

BeoSound 5

The plus :

- Heavy and tactile-feeling aluminium control wheels
- Stunning build quality
- Sharp, high-quality screen
- Searching through music is amazingly enjoyable
- MOTS auto playlists
- Lossless music files
- BeoMaster 5 storage
- Master Link (NL with converter)
- Streaming music integrated (Spotify)

The minus :

- No keyboard : searching through a "giant" music collection can be long !
- Streaming actors are missing : deezer, apple music,...
- Too many cables between BS5, BM5 and router. Wi-fi and bluetooth need a dongle
- The cover art of music albums from Gracenote are low resolution. They must be change manually with a computer

Don't forget it's a music system from 2008.
I can understand that nowadays, it can be outdated for the young generation who listen to music with smartphone and tablets through headphones and connected speakers.

I still love my BeoSound 5, really. But the Moment is another option, a more modern wireless music system that integrates music collection and services into one.

I totally agree With you Steph. I still love using mine. It's different, it's quirky and everyone who visits thinks it looks great.

Hi, Is soundquality from AUX-input (Beosound 5) really terrible? I was thinking of getting a Chromecast Audio with Behringer UFO-202. Is this really a bad setup (sound quality) if you compare playing CD:s from the harddrive (beomaster 5)? Is there a lot of degradation in sound quality just because of use of USB- A.AUX-in in the Beosound 5?

Hi, How "bad" is the aux-input? Have you tried a Behringer USB-converter?

Is it especielly the AUX-input soundwise that is bad? Do you know why it is bad sound quality just on aux-input?
