Master control panel 5500 volume issue not microswitch

My mcp works except volume control. It doesn't appear to be the micro switch as I tested with meter, also jumping the connectors on the pins has no effect. The panel recognises the system volume and shows the level via led's (I used a beolink 1000 too). Is the circuitry at fault do you think?

Most likely the opto component reading the black/white pattern on the wheel.

Thanks, it looks like at sometime the unit was opened and the opto component squashed flat, breaking one of its legs. Is it possible to get another, and should the tiny little sensors face in towards to the wheel edge, or out as it appeared to look on mine?
