I'm an engineer (unfortunately not an electronic one) and long-term B&O afficionado. I've a Beosystem 5500, Beolab Penta and various other Beovoice speakers, and a Beovision Avant television. All still function reasonably well, but suffer from minor faults which I would like - if possible - to fix (or have fixed). Given some knowledgable guidance, I'm quite handy with a multimeter and soldering iron. I'm hoping that some of the more expert members of Beoworld may be able to point me in the right direction.
Beogram CD 5500 - It recently stopped recognising previously-recognised burned CD's. (It still recognises and plays bought CD's with no problems). I've tried freshly burned identical CD's, using both Roxio and Nero burning software, but still no recognition. None of the other CD players I've tried these discs (old and new) in (car, portable, other systems) have had any problem recognising them. I've cleaned the laser on the CD 5500, but that made no difference. What has gone wrong? And what needs to be done to re-enable My CD 5500 to recognise burned CD's?
Beocord 5500 - One of the red LED recording level lights no longer lights up. How can I fix this one?
Beolab Pentas - The yellow display on one of the speakers has failed. Nothing on the display lights up any more. (The display on the other speaker still works fine). These speakers can be a bit of a pig to transport, and I suspect any unnecessary jostling of this old equipment is probably best avoided. How can I set about fixing this?
Beovision Avant - Signal to this now comes from a digital set-top box. Output from the digital box is plugged into the SCART socket marked "AV" on the back panel of the Avant. The television can only be switched on by pressing the "DVD" button on the Beo 4 remote control - not the button marked "TV". It's a bit trivial I know, but is it possible to restore switching on of the television to the "TV" button instead of the "DVD" one?
Any assistance/guidance that you may be able to provide to help this old codger and his Beocodger equipment to keep swanning along will be much appreciated! Many thanks!
I am not an electronics expert, but would welcome you to Beoworld and suggest a couple of things. The equipment you have is not that old and in fact I have many of the same pieces.
1. CD5500 - probably the best CD player made by B&O - especially the first ones without the singles insert - the problem will be a capacitor on the servo board - look here
2. Probably not economic to fix! And likely to be tricky - you can get a replacement BC5500 for almost nothing.
3. Remove the display and see if you can fix it out of the speaker.
4. No, but I believe you can buy the new remote and program that to be one of the initial buttons. The later TVs allow what you want but not the Avant (which I also have!!)
Most of the service manuals are on site if you are a silver or gold member - if the latter, you stand a pretty good chance of winning some new equipment!

You suggest getting a "Repair Kit" from Dillen on this site. Afraid I'm a proper Newbie - How do I raise an order for the proper type of capacitor with Dillen?

regarding point 3 check if the audio/video switch on the non-displaying Penta is in the correct position (audio if connected to a beomaster or video if connected to the avant)
Or have a look at the working one. Probably it's only this small problem which is mostly overlooked ... I've got some Beolabs cheap because of a "non-working display"
And of course I do hope you are soldering on, not soldiering

Thanks for your suggestion re the Audio/Video switch position. I'm not aware of this switch on my Pentas. The opening front panel exposes three switches. These are:
INPUT LEVEL switch (3-position - I, II, or III)
MODE switch (4-position - OFF, AUTO, L, or R)
BASS EXTENSION switch (3-position - I, II, or III)
Is the switch you mentioned inside the unit somewhere? If it is in there somewhere, I don't think it can be the cause of the problem. The display just stopped working one day. I'm pretty sure a switch didn't get shifted to the wrong position by someone to cause it to blank the display.

If they are Penta 1 speakers, I don't think they switch - otherwise the switch is on the bottom next to the connections. Might be worth switching it backwards a forwards a couple of times in case of oxidisation, I suppose.
Found the Audio/Video switch on the bottom of the Penta thanks Peter. (They're Type 6622's). It was set to "Audio". Tried twiddling it back and forth - it moved quite crisply and smoothly - but unfortunately the display remained dead!
