Which is the best ( most powerful) of the FM connections on the Beomaster 5000, the 300ohms or the 75ohms? I didn't see anything in the manual saying which connection to use.
I just acquired a proper (correct) FM antenna for my new Beomaster 5000 and am trying to bring in a FM station which is 90 miles (145km) away.
I checked on the internet and found that the 75ohm is more "modern" but that doesn't it is is better, just more commonly used on newer equipment.
So which is best to bring in a distant station?
Thanks,
Jeff

You cannot really say, that one is more powerful than the other. You simply choose the one that fits your antenna. You would typically use 75 Ohm for a coax cable connection and 240/300 Ohm for a dipole.
Martin
Hi Martin,
The antenna plug will fit equally well in all FM outlets on the Beomaster 5000. At first I utilized the handy slot on the back of the Beomaster for the antenna, with exceptionally unremarkable results. Much better results were achieved laying the antenna flat and extending the arms fully.
There is a 75 Ohm outlet, but it is also dipole, not the more expected coax connection.
I tried all the outlets and they seemed very much alike.
When I took the antenna apart I notice what appeared to me to be two resistors in the arm housing, so if B&O felt the need to put resisters in the antenna and offer three choices of outlets, I thought it best to ask which one to use.
Does the above "logic" make any sense?Apparently it doesn't make much if any difference which outlet is chosen.
Inlets surely?
No, it doesn't make any difference. Anyway, the Beomaster will tune into stations with no aerial anyway.

Well Mr. O. you most certainly had me scratching my head this morning. Checked my messages prior to either breakfast or coffee and after reading your educational piece figured I had finally "snapped my twig." So much so that I actually raced over to the Beomaster 5000 and took a look at the back to see if I had, indeed lost my mind.
What a relief, it IS as I said, three identical plugs (your sample D is correct) for 300-ohm, 75-ohm, and Local. I never tried Local as I am, point in fact, trying to bring in a FM station that is 145km away in Seattle.
It was not quite on the level of the "Best Picture" mix-up at the Oscars, but you definitely had me going for awhile. When I saw that the post disappeared it really gave me a laugh, a really BIG laugh, and I can't think of a better way to start ANY day. Thank you kind sir.

Hi Jacques,
You are quite right, the Beomaster 5000 can bring in local stations with no antenna, but I don't think it would manage a station 145km away.
Also, you were right about the Beolab, it hits notes with a clarity that the Beomaster 4400 never attempted. (Possibly the result of the sad state of my BM4400, but still.....) The Beolab has become my amplifier of choice BECAUSE of its rather unique abilities that are pretty much impossible to put properly into words.

Yes, it was early morning here and I had the later version Beomaster 5000 in mind.

I guessed as much. None the less, even after I had had time to think things through, I still managed to confuse "plugs" with what I should have said, "Outlets."
Perhaps you'd agree, "To err is human, to forgive divine." It is just a fact of life, errors are no stranger in this household.
Mix-up notwithstanding, I appreciate your input.
