Hello Beoworlders

After gradually shifting from the classic ML Beo world to the new NL world, I still have a Beosound 3000 without any speakers which is not used anymore.

I am thinking or re-activing it for my study as a stand-alone set-up, by added a couple of Beolab 2500. However, I noted that these speakers are fairly scarce on the second hand market.

Before taking the plunge, I would like to understand from your experience how these speakers are soundwise (eg. compared to Beolab 4000's or BL4's).

Furthermore, what are the main differences between Mk1 and Mk2 (except for the frets). Should I go for one or the other?

Finally, are there any particular problems I should be aware of? Eg. how about foam rot?

Looking forward to your experiences!

I agree with the stack ranking above.  In my opinion, the BL4000s are quite remarkable for what they are.  I also like the fact that you have so many color options and they also can be easily wall mounted.

I actually have 2 pairs at the moment - One is the MK1 which employs a class A/B amplifier and the Mk2 which uses a class D IcePower unit.

Unlike some here, I actually prefer the sound of the MK2 version but the MK1 has the advantage of having both Powerlink and RCA line in whereas the MK2 is Powerlink only so will require and adapter to connect do a non Powerlink system.  Unlike the MK1's, the MK2's don't have a power switch and so only come on when a signal is detected via the Powerlink socket.

As far as price (using USD and eBay as an example) a good pair of BL4000s can be had for between $2-300 if you shop around.

One thing I will point out is that if you happen to purchase a good working pair of MK1 BL4000s, the VERY FIRST thing you'll want to do is take them apart and remove ALL of the internal foam - That stuff degrades into a horrible goo that will ultimately destroy the internal electronics and sourcing new amplifier and power-supply boards for these isn't cost effective.  Rest assured, though, that if you do get MK1s in working condition AND clean them up on the inside, they should work for many more years.

Take care

Greg

Hi Marexy

I would probably wall mount the BS3000 and the speakers, so the BL2500 would be my preferred option. I must admit through that I have not found any BL2500 for 200€. The ones I saw so far were more in 300 - 400 € range Sad

Yes ..agree ..BL 4000

MK1 have some issue with foam rooth.

If you remove it and clean inside and add new foam or like than it's better option as MK2.

Class D amplifier is not as long lasting as MK1 amplifier. I have mine for 17 years with no problem at all!
