Apple is planning an improvement to its AirPlay audio and video streaming technology, according to a report from The Telegraph.

The new AirPlay system would allow streaming devices like the iPhone or iPad to directly send content to a set of speakers or other receiver without a Wi-Fi network. The Telegraph expects 'AirPlay Direct' to be announced on September 12, together with the next-generation iPhone.

Sources familiar with the iPhone-maker’s plans said that Apple wants to improve the AirPlay wireless music streaming technology, which currently requires Airplay speakers and a WiFi network. The new version will require just speakers or a hifi and an iDevice; the iPhone, iPod or iPad would form its own network to allow a direct connection and music playback.

The Telegraph expects Apple to promote AirPlay Direct as a replacement to the hardware connection on many iPhone/iPod docks, and allow playback of music wirelessly from device to receiver.

That was quick Paul ! You beat me to it.

At first I thought they might be promoting bluetooth connections ... now I think it is some form of direct wireless i.e. with the iDevice providing some "router" functions ... Confused

Sounds to me like they have just implemented WiFi Direct... Airplay + Wifi Direct = Airplay Direct!

Sounds similar to apples personal hotspot available on I phones. Probably costs as much as well. Bluetooth would of been good soon as it would of been free.

If the new airplay used Bluetooth.

Like the way the old AirPlay used wifi.

I think that would be good. That's what I was suppose to say steffan. And as for google translate Laughing  no I didn't use that it's just I wrote the message three times and my iPad kept crashing so I got a bit fed up and it didn't end up making sense. Hope it does now. Lets have a Party !!!

Thanks Elephant! Yep just got in from the gym and saw it on my FaceBook! I'm sure it will be far better than Bluetooth as that really compresses the sound doesn't it?

Sounds very exciting as that will make the BeoLit 12 truly portable and it may 'actually work' ;)

The most expensive phones/tablets have the most fragile screens...Hmm No wonder Apple is making lots of money -If they can sell their customers new screens every 2-3 months...
I've never broke a screen on ANY of my non-apple devices (Phones -tablets) ...And - I have dropped them now and then too!!!
And a Beo4 can be dropped on a concrete floor without breaking the screen too...Now - thats quality Yes - thumbs up

The Beo4 is made from condensed Kryptonite, and is so powerful it could replace the Police tasers.

Beosound Stage, Beovision 8-40, Beolit 20, Beosound Explore.

Just rumors I expect. But then there isn't smoke without fire.

I don't expect this feature (if it ever does materialize) to use Bluetooth, that would comprimise sound quality in a big way IMHO.

What I DO look forward to is Apple unlocking AirPlay functionality to stream to multiple AirPlay devices at once. Would be heck of alot better instead of relying on computer to be turned on and using AirFoil etc.....

Bluetooth is an open standard, so I believe there's no fear of Apple using it.

From iTunes you can send audio to several AirPlay units at once. It is not available in iOS yet, probably because of hardware limitations.

I would believe that AirPlay Direct is the same thing as AirDrop in Mac OS X. A Wifi connection between units that doesnt require them to be connected to the same network. They simply scan the surrounding for wifi-devices to connect directly to.

Hard to say if the BeoLit and BeoSound units will be able to gain the feature with a software upgrade but I would hope so. It would make the complete setup procedure unnecessary, but of course it could be nice to set a network name for the unit :)

This feature is Apple's implementation of Wifi Direct, and yes, unfortunately, it needs a new hardware wifi chip to work. So no, no software update possible, hardware update is mandatory.

All is  revealed on September 12th.  Sounds unlikely and very Un-Apple if a new chip is required as that wouldn't be compatible with existing Apple TV boxes? Exciting times...

Well, sometimes new technology requires new hardware - that's just the way it is. It's like people complaining about that Airplay Mirroring doesn't work on their older Macs and that Apple have stabbed them back and blah blah blah... It's not Apple's fault, it's just the way it is.

But I don't think that Airplay Direct will be important for the Apple TV anyway, because that's meant for use in the home. This is more useful for the beach etc.

Will I be able to play my LPs on the new iPhone?

Yes, this is exactly what they are doing. Bluetooth doesn't have the bandwidth for mirroring video content. It will simply be a direct wifi connection, avoiding your router (often in a different room).

Im not very sure that is the case. Sure I think the unit needs a Wifi-card that supports wifi direct which many does since a few years back. I don't know what kind of wifi is in the beolit 12. I have yet to see it taken apart. I should buy one just to take it apart I think :).

I've never had any problems with my beolit12 on the go. I just setup the same network on my iPhone and iPad as my home router in the wifi/internet sharing settings (mifi). Airplay works fine this way.

Good that the Beo4 screen's OK, but on the very few occasions I've done it, the clips on the battery cover have always broken and I've needed a new one.

Looking for one now, but the only one I can find is on eBay from the United States. Could do with finding one closer to home. Anyone know where?

Nope, Apple's implementation of WiDi is called Airplay Mirroring. It mirrors the PCs screen to a TV.

Thanks for the clarification. I was trying to work out if it's new and distinct or not. Perhaps albeit ignorantly I thought you could directly connect your idevice to say your beolit12 directly. But I understand that's not the case.

i've got my mac pro and mac mini hooked up to my hdtv so the whole airplay thing is a bit pointless - for me anyway

i tried the game mirroring on the ipad - it wasn't very good tbh :(

maybe this will lead to a new standards war or another round of patent battles
