Hi Team,

I have a friend who has a BeoSound 5 on his boat and because of there not being any internet connection on the boat is there any way of manually updating the software? USB stick or similar? And where would you download the software from if you can do this?

Although the BeoSound 5 is great, it is highly inappropriate for a boat unless it has a full network, because it can't be updated with new music, what my friend wants to do is add the CD ripper but then of course it won't get the artist/track/album/info, so then the other question is would it be possible to connect a 3G dongle and the BeoMaster 5 use this for the internet connection?

Thanks

Try a broadband router that has the possibility to use 3G for the upstream. They have an USB port for the dongle, and then provide "internet" over WiFi and/or Ethernet. Can't recommend a certain brand or model, but there are plenty available and they aren't expensive either.

We equip the BeoSound 5s we install on boats with WiFi so that they can join mobile hotspots. We've found that transferring content is actually pretty speedy this way. SW updates are slower than at home, but not too terrible.

If you have a Beosound 5 on a boat, surely you do have an internet solution also?

Anyway as said here I also suggest a router with support for mobile broadband dongles. The BM5 can be connecter with a ethernet cable to the router. Another more temporary solution would be to share your computers internet connection to the BM5. If you have an iPhone and a Mac it is easy to do.

Another solution could be to carry the BM5 into their home and upgrade it there perhaps.

I would install a wired setup in the boat and use a router or routermodem with support for mobile networks, connected with several wifi-access points around the boat for easy access to the network with good internal speeds.

If your friend is traveling alot in different countries they can buy local prepaid simcards in most countries that will work very easily but probably require a little computer skill since the network will have to be set for the current ISP.

Another thing could also be to add a server to cache internet traffic so that it can be served faster instead of being downloaded several times over again.

A simple solution is to use the "connection sharing" mode of a smartphone (iPhones an dAndroid can do it, depending on your provider), which creates a wifi hotspot powered by the 3G network.

Yeah I kind of agree with Bsantini here. Whilst there's no way on God's earth that I would ever recommend a BS5/BS5 Encore, I think a BeoSound 8 with the iPhone or iPad would have been great here! Why make life complicated?

Not everybody in this world own (or wants to own) an iPhone or iPad...Surprise Whistle

-and some even wants a system with some quality speakers, instead of just a dockingstation...Cool

I'm quite sure your dealer could provide the software update on a USB stick. I was offered this from my local store ;)

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all your help, the BeoSound 5 is in the living room which is covered so danger of seawater there apart from people with wet hands. It is connected to a BeoCenter 2 as well with 2 pairs of BeoLab 3's and looks/sounds great but it is just a bit impractical for what they want to do. It was fitted at the boat manufacturers and was when the BS5 first came out so I know the software is very old.

I am going out to Mallorca where the boat is kept in October and have been asked to find a better solution, whether it be a way to transfer the music in an easier way, add a CD ripper or give a phono input into the USB and just give them an iPod connection which would seem like a real shame to have to do.

I like the idea of using a smartphone as a hotspot, so is there a specific wireless USB adapter I need to get? I can't take a keyboard or mouse with me to get into the windows menus as I am only going for the weekend so just taking the one hand luggae bag (good old Ryanair!)

Thanks again!

The Beomaster 5 is just an XP-based PC. There should be no reason that a local Mifi-enabled (3G dongle) would not work.

Place the BM5 in Maintenance mode (XP Windows front) and use the BS5 as a monitor. The only other issue is working out how you would use a dongle, USB keyboard and mouse all together. (USB expanders, combined mouse /keyboard etc).

Once your 3G is up and running, leave in the background and return to B&O mode. You should be able to a) download, b) recieve radio depending on your connection speed. Once updated, simply unplug the dongle.
