Greetings all.

Im considering buying the Beolab 5, will be used for HiFi only.

I am aware that Beolab 5 can be coupled with non-B&O equipment, like a pre amplifier.

Two questions I hope you can help me with:

Can the volume be controlled by the pre-amp? In this setup the Beolab will be a pure amplifier (and loudspeaker of course :)

To what degree will the pre-amp color the sound? Is it approx to same degree as a standart HiFi system? As I understand it the Beolab has a rather unique internal analogue>digital>analogue konversion, something that could affect the "color of sound" comming from the pre-amplifier (and something that Im a great fan of).

Thx for reading.

1) Yes, the volume can be controled by the preamp. You'll need a Beoremote to set the gain of the BL5. The signals can be analog line in or digital. Both will work fine.

2) There is another post in the forum discussing about sound quality of the internal DAC of the BL5. On my testing I couldn't identify any difference when listening via analog line in or digital, so, any of them will work fine.

Thx Putzgrilous, much appreciated!

The first question was the most important, as I have a couple of good tube pre-amps, that are also very KISS build. Your answer should promise that they can be incoorporated in set setup, no problemo :)

I have searched the Forum for info on the BL5 internal dac (and conversion), havnt found gold yet but will carry on.

Thx again!

Hi Sl3ipner,

Yes, you can get high quality sound through Beolab 5s via a non-B&O pre-amp, or directly from a digital source.  It is worth noting that you will need a B&O remote to power up the speakers before use.  Volume control can be arranged either from the B&O remote or from the music source/pre-amp.

For speakers made after April 2004 (software level 2.5 and above), you should also add a specially-wired Sync cable between the two speakers to ensure that they operate at matched volume levels:-

Thx Putzgrilous, good thread!

Knowing close to nothing about BL5 (and B&O in generel, shame on me really having grown up less than 50km from Struer) the tread shows a) discussions around digital and analog conversions as we know it from all decent HiFi forums, which gives me something to relate to :) and 2) the non-B&O pre-amp and dac setups are alive and kicking.

In conclusion a tube pre-amp is not only possible, but wil most likely benefit the sound (in my ears).

Thx again!

Just a follow up.

I have ordered a set of Beloab 5 (Final Edition, nothing fancy but polished alu yeah :) Am expecting them next week. May seem like a blindfolded buy, but the reviews are convincing - including strong recommandations from my "home forum" in Norway.

thx again guys.
