Further to my last question re switching off the system. Answer, switch off from mains.

I don't use my system everyday - should I switch it off when not in use?

I only unplug it when I am leaving town.

I know people who unplug their LCD TVs and microwave ovens etc before going to work to save pennies on their power bill.

I owned a Beosystem 5500 that I used in my office for about two years. It made a slight smell of "old" when in powered standby so I used to turn it off. Those devices can't go down into very low standby power so they cost money and also produce some heat, that in my case caused an odor that resembled old books. I don't like that so I turned it off but even if the system wouldn't do that I would turn it off since it got slightly hot.

My more modern tech is never turned of though.

Keep in mind, that all components, that has a power cord, has a power-supply and will take stand-by current.  It's a good advice to shut off all electric stuff, when beeing in vacation!
