Hi all,
I bought a set of BeoVox S45-2 at a flea market. After doing some googling I was pleasantly surprised by the number of active forums on this brand! I hope you can help me with a question. Please note: I'm completely new to the HiFi world, so I might ask stupid questions / give stupid responses.
Every forum seems to mention that these speakers sound way better with a popper amp, and that these speakers can be very picky to what you connect.
Are there things I should look out for? Brands / labels / specifications that help me find the right amp for this set of speakers? Or should I just try to find reviews on every individual amp I can find (I know labels and brands don't mean everything).
I hope I posted this in the right topic,
Kind Regards,
Sjoerdius
Actually I find they sound pretty good with any decent amplifier. Clearly on this forum you are going to be advised to buy a Beomaster ! Clearly you are on a budget and I would therefore look for a rarer model that not many people want - incorrectly in my opinion! The Beomaster 2200 is a fantastic amplifier - matches the S45-2 perfectly and also has the benefit of a good FM and AM radio. It is also built in a modular fashion and is therefore fairly easy to work on.
Having just searched, there is one here.
To get better sound, you would need a Beomaster 4400 and that is probably not ideal for the S45.2s as it could peak too high. I have used them with one though and they sound great!

I would concur with Peter - these are both (the speakers & the Beomaster) superb. You just won't get a better sound for your money. They just sound "right".
An alternative to the Beomaster would be a Beocenter 7000 which was manufactured at the same time. Again, it has a sound that sounds great and is never tiring. It also has the benefit of remote control. My wife's uncle bought this combo more than 35 years ago and it's still going strong having been used pretty much every day...
Cheers

Something that Peter alluded to - repairs. If you can, find someone as local to yourself as possible who is experienced with working on B&O this old, as you can't expect them to go on for ever and eventually they will require some maintenance. - Keeping them working is part of the fun of owning B&O this old (bit like owning a vintage car).
@Peter,
Unfortunately, yes, the budget is a bit tight, especially compared to what most B&O equipment sells for :').
Thank you for the tip! There happens to be one for sale near to me as well, so I hope I can get the highest bid.
@Nigel,
Damn, that Beocenter 7000 sure looks tasty .
Of course, repairing goes hand in hand with old electronics ':).
I read on some forums that the capacitors will probably be dead by now. I'm hoping mine are still OK, but else I'm able to fix it. The speakers look too pretty not to take care of.
