Guys,
I just got my Beomaster 1600 back from being rebuilt and have two unresolved problems. I was alerted to the first as being an “issue” on the bench.
The first problem is when the front aluminum panel is in place none of the sliders work including the on/off switch. With the panel off, everything works as it should.
This panel limits the range of the buttons when being depressed. The problem I have is the buttons can not move far enough down to engage the clutches and the adjustment belts.
It appears there is some adjustment possible but the assembly appears to be as far in the direction needed as possible.
If I leave the panel off the buttons function but they end up all at different levels, as the panel also limits the top position keeping them even.
Obviously this 1600 worked as designed when new, so something has shifted, but what?
I tried adding tiny pieces of plastic under the buttons to extend them and this actually helped get some of them to work, sort of. However I find this a Rube Goldberg remedy and would rather correct the problem properly.
Second problem, all the LED’s on the left side were out when I purchased this 1600. However they illuminated the entire time the 1600 was in for repair so my shop didn’t see an issue. The LED’s also worked when I received the 1600, but the second time I turned it on, they were out, as when I first got the 1600.
Clearly there is a fault, a loose wire, a bad solder point, but where? I have the schematics but I have no training with schematics so I need some direction as to where to look for this fault.
This Beomaster 1600 looks stunning with Martin’s near NOS belts and Benny did a fine job on the amplifier, which sounds GREAT.
But with the button issue this 1600 is basically useless.
As such I really would appreciate some direction as how to solve these two problems.
Thank you!
Jeff

Oh boy, either this is a question with no obvious answer, or just too "odd" to merit a response.
Since the clutches all work, and as all the buttons on my non-functioning BM 1600 work well, leaving the sliders in place, how big a job would it be to change out all the buttons? Or is that pointless?
Personally I'd rather "learn" of a way to adjust the height of the buttons so that they work.
I also acknowledge that the BM 1600 is a rare amp and thus not many people have hands-on experience with them. BUT if anyone does know about adjusting the control buttons I sure would like to hear about it.
Thanks.
The circuit board holders are adjustable. If this doesn't give enough, adding distance material in the form of small cut pieces of plastic sheet orsimilar may be the only way forward.
Martin
Hello Martin,
Thank you for your input. I noticed the adjustable holder but it at least "appears" to be moved as far as possible in the direction that would help. I noticed with my original (non-functional) BM 1600 that all the buttons engage and I can specifically feel/hear the on/off switch working properly. I think I might be able to "learn" something in why one works and why the rebuilt one doesn't.
Of no interest here, my father-in-law turns 89 this weekend, so I will have no time to spend on this project, but the following weekend it is a priority. If I can find nothing else to do, adding small cut pieces of plastic to extend the run of the buttons will probably solve this odd problem.
Again, if anyone has suggestions as to where to LOOK for the electrical fault that has all the LED's out on the left side, I surely would appreciate it. The LED's were out when I first received this BM 1600, but when it arrived at the repair shop, they all worked. (Something clearly happened in shipment.) The LED's were still working when I first opened the box after being rebuilt, but the next time I tried, they were out.
I spent a good hour and a half with a flashlight and tweezers tapping on anything I thought might be the cause of the problem, to no effect. It is possible that my tapping has been to timid as I don't want to damage anything while searching for a fault.
So any educated guidance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks again Martin, it is really nice that you so routinely jump to the assistance of novices like me.
The LEDs on the tonecontrol module are supposed to be lit at all times when power is on, so diagnosing must befairly easy.Check for presence of 15V on the module with the LEDs (module 14), it comes from connector P4 pin 2 on module 13 (andupstream via P3 pin 9 on module 13 and P5 pin 4 on module 22 (power regulator)).Check also for presence of ground on the module (that's P4 pin 1 on module 13).Typical problems are cracked solder joints where the two module plug together. If both 15V and ground is present on module 14, there must be a broken track on module 14 - in the given case that would bebetween the nearest LED and the plug.Martin
Thank you Martin,
As you know electronics are not my "specialty," however with your directions I am fairly sure I can figure this out.
The tuner LED's do not have a problem. (Just in case I failed to make that clear.)
Having nothing to do with the BM 1600, I had a problem with my BC 8004 in that a ball bearing jammed the cassette mechanism and I couldn't figure where it had come from.I recently posted a question and John (from Texas) responded.
John posted excellent photos with arrows pointing to the cassette retainers and with both in hand I found a plastic support had broken (You would never know until you pressed on it) and glued in place, ball bearing where it was supposed to be, problem solved by the really wonderful folks here on BeoWorld.
I look forward to having this BM 1600 fully functional and again, thank you very much.
