In one of the beolab 5 speakers (connected through the beosystem 4), I get the following problem several times per day: a loud cracking noise/sounds, as if someone is shooting from a gun-machine for about 0.5-2 sec (sounds like 3-10 "pistol shots".

I have no idea what to do and it’s really annoying me?

Maybe someone else already had a similar problem and knows how to solve it?

Have you tried swapping the Power Link wire that connects it to the BS4 with a replacement (or even just wiggling the connectors at either end of the existing wire)? It might be that the problem lies there...

Cheers

Hi ESBOSS,

Yes, that does sound like it could be a cable issue as Geoff sugggested.  You could try swapping the cables to the opposite speakers to see if the fault moves with the cable or stays with the same speaker.  I'm happy to offer you new Beosystem 4 to Beolab 5 cables on a sale or return basis to try out without obligation if that helps:-

No problem, I'm always happy to offer this for Beoworlders.  I'm happy to refund the cables in full up to 60 days after ordering (please keep them in good condition!) so you can use them free to test your speakers or identify any wiring issues.

I often find that the improvement in sound quality persuades people to keep my cables! Big Smile

It's a shame that my topic got turned into advertising various cables… Well, I changed the signal source and cable, but the shots still continue. Hence the conclusion is that the problem is inside the speaker. Maybe someone had similar shots / problems?

To me it seemed that people were extending you a hand, wanting to help you find & solve the problem. I think that's kindness, not a shame.

As for the issue, it's unfortunate changing cables didn't help, and I hope you get the problem solved out.

Hi ESBOSS,

No advertising was intended, just an offer of help......  At least you know you don't have a cable fault now.  It looks like a possible hardware fault on the system or speakers, so I would suggest contacting your local B&O store to see if they can recommend a repairer.

It is the amplifier problem. better ask your dealer. We have encountered this before. Its sounds like a popping popcorn.

Thank you. I also thought so, but I found out that the volume of the "shots" depends on the set volume of the speakers. I think it's something between the input and power amplifiers. There is someone video or instructions for disassembling beolab 5. I want to try to change the modules between the right and the left column.

Hi,

Please be aware that the software installed on the DSP board includes parameters that are customised to the drivers in your BeoLab 5's. So, if you swap your DSP board for another without including the correct values for these parameters, your loudspeakers will no longer be correctly calibrated, since the software will be compensating for someone else's loudspeaker drivers... As a result, although this may correct your current problem, it could result in your loudspeakers sounding different than they do now. How different is dependent on the exact differences in the sensitivities of the drivers that you have and the ones the new board has been programmed for.

Cheers

Thank you for your advice!

I think it's better to listen to an unbalanced sound than loud shots from a machine gun costing 20k bucks))) How much do I understand for setting the "Service Tool" is used?

It would be good to know the expert's opinion about what the problem is on the DSP board. Is It can be possible to repair the DSP board, since it is sold only together with four amplifiers, which are still working. This is perhaps the best invention of B & O and I hope they have it patented, what would competitors do not do so)

Honestly get it served by certified personnel. It's not a good idea to service on your own.

Listening to an 'unbalanced sound' from a pair of BL5's must be like being shot by a machine gun ;-(

Hi,

Without knowing exactly what is happening with your speaker, it would be impossible for me to guess at how to diagnose or repair it. Sorry...

I think experts B&O know exactly the cause of the shots by the symptoms.

But this is like a great military secret for the users :)

I have experience in electronics. Once in the 80's, even the amplifier of class D did with their hands. Of course, the experience has degraded, but with the replacement of blocks I'll figure it out myself. I think not worse than the well-known certified personnel. Sometimes it's interesting to do something myself

I hope you never need medical attention :-). Jokes aside. The hardware is not bad but it features software data as even Geoff is saying. But you seem to disregard it and more or less just think you can do everything on your own. I'd say that is not a good approach in this case since the speaker is heavily software dependent to sound as it should. Doing a bad job is not something to search for even though you can do it yourself - it will never be as good. It's one of the world most expensive speakers and to me it sounds like you're trying to retouch a Picasso on your own.

Please just let it be serviced professionally by B&O.

Thank you for your caution. I understand. I would just add that this expensive speaker did not even make Picasso auto-turn on and off if you do not use a PowerLink. Maybe someone from B & O will explain why it was necessary to do the line and spdf. For the user's ability to have an additional B & O remote? They like Apple want to create an ecosystem but it turns out funny.

ESBOSS,

With all due respect the above posts are correct, also in your best interest. Tinkering with 12k$ DSP controlled loudspeakers yourself is really not a great idea in my opinion as well.

Towards your comment on how the BL5 works in terms of connectivity, well the BL5 are basically unique from b&o line up in that they can use Powerlink data for triggering and volume control. Plus analogue audio via powerlink or digital audio spdif. So yes this exact model is sort of odd using anything other than Beosound 5.

As I am sure you're aware, the BL5 along with all modern WISA loudspeakers are no longer analogue. Even analogue inputs pass A/D > DSP > D/A > amps. This is indeed one major downside of anything completely under computer control, especially one that is quite obscure and not having access to the software.

Without having access to spare known working boards (could be switching supply, DSP board, amps..) and software configuration tool, you will be having a nearly impossible time troubleshooting. Yes b&o tech will not do board-level repairs, only swap entire boards because why chance ineffective repair on such an expensive device - like a car it is guaranteed to work simply by replacing the entire board.

>>>Yes b&o tech will not do board-level repairs<<<

I'll correct you. Boards of B & O amplifiers ICE 250 or ICE 1000 can be changed. For this, you need first to demontage the DSP board. But you can not replace the board DSP separately.

It's like in a car. You can buy a wheel assembly or an rim, but you can not buy a tire )))

B&O is cool :)

Changing a board is not board level repair. In the parlance of my career, that's called replacing an LRU, line replaceable unit. It's the lowest level of maintenance done at depot level, and also at almost all service departments. Any diagnostics and repair of individual components on a board are done at the manufacturer, this is true for military equipment as well as consumer electronics, I've never seen lower than board level replacement at dealers lately. When I worked in a stereo shop we did have a service tech who did component level repairs, but that was in the days before ICs and surface mount devices. Changing a bad transistor or resistor is a lot different than repairing a DSP driven board.

I wouldn't underestimate the significance of the calibration information you'd lose by swapping a board without proper procedures to clone the info to the new board. I know for the older, far simpler Beolabs, unless you were lucky enough to get drivers that had the same characteristics as the adjustments in the speaker were set to accept, the sonic differences could be striking. I can only think that the kinds of mismatches in a system that is as finely calibrated for different parameters as the BL5 would be a more critical issue.

Probably you do not understand. It's not about replacing LRU, but about that, together with the board DSP in the service B & O, I have to buy all the chassis (4 amplifiers, etc.). I do not mind the calibration, but this can be done by replacing only DSP

even if it would have been a blown fuse "only" - B&O replaces the complete chassis (~ € 600,-- plus Installation service).

Ah, I misunderstood you. That does seem excessive, they have apparently designed it so that the LRU is all of the speaker electronics, rather than individual modules like amps, or DSP boards. In my career we never would have done that, the customer wouldn't have allowed it.

In the Russian B & O costs of chassis, depending on the modification, from 3960 to 5550 euros. This prices without works

2 or 3 years ago I had a loud “popping” sound once in a while, which I isolated to one of the Beolab 5’s 15” bass drivers. I contacted a authorized B&O service tech. that ran a diagnostic test, but there was no errors indicated, but the factory support team was contacted, and it was a known problem with the electronic chassis. I was offered a complete replacement chassis unit from B&O for € 350,00 (plus labour for the service tech.) Note. All the factory parameters for all the affected speaker’s drivers, are stored on a eprom memory chip, and this eprom is then transferred over to the replacement chassis unit to keep the speakers sounding as they were intended from factory 👍🔊😉
