I am located in the Boston area and just inherited Beolab 5 speakers. Do I need an amplifier to run?

Thank you.

No. BeoLab5's have amplifiers built into them. You'll need either a special "powerlink"* cable, usually used with B&O equipment, regular line-in or I believe a toslink input.

Count yourself very lucky on inheriting these speakers. They are gems.

 * Inaccurately name because no actual power is transmitted via these cables. Just audio signals.

Hi and welcome to Beoworld !

Consider the BL5s as a set of an integrated amplifier + signal converter + loudspeaker. All you need is an audio signal (analog or digital) and (may be) a B&O remote (to start/stop and set the volume level).

or I believe a toslink input.

To be accurate, the digital BL5s connection is S/PDIF (Sony/Philips Digital Interface Format) ; not with fiber optic cable with Toslink connectors but 75 Ohms coaxial cable with RCA connectors.

For the comparison, Powerlink and Line-in use analog and electrical signals.

Hi,

I have seen one case where a person fed their BeoLab 5's using the power amp outputs of a third-party receiver using home-made adapters with RCA plugs on one end  (for the BL5's) and bare wire on the other end (for the amp outputs on the receiver).

This is a bad idea. Do not do this. Use a line output - not a power amp output - if you connect the line input of the 5's to a non-B&O device.

Cheers

This may answer that and most of your questions concerning how to use the BL5's.

If you have any further, feel free to ask these here.

Congrats on the BL5's and welcome to Beoworld.

You'll also need a remote control from B&O to operate those speakers when using line-in or toslink inputs.

Congratulations, they are amongst the very best speakers ever produced. Considering their size and design I would say the best ones ever produced. While also being easy to operate. Not many things like that on the market.

I hope you will enjoy them a lot!

Hi michaelsch,

I think everyone who reads this post is very envious of you - I can confidently speak for most Beoworlders when I say that Beolab 5s are on almost all of our wishlists! Big Smile

you can use these superb speaker with almost any audio or video product, the main caveat (as Geoff mentioned previously) is not to try connecting them to the speaker terminals of a power amplifier, as this can cause very expensive damage.

If you can please tell us which devices you use to play your music and movies, we can help you use these to best effect with your new speakers.  The more detail you can give us about the equipment you have, the better placed we will be to help!

Kind regards, Steve.

Steve.
