Hi all - a quick search online has brought me here for some help.

Firstly I have no prior experience with B&O systems, long coveted one though.

Clearing a relatives house recently I came across a box with a Beogram 1100 turntable, Beomaster 1900 & a couple of beovox speakers. Excited to say the least. Fitted them together plugged everything in then switched on Beomaster.

Everything lit up.

tried FM first, lovely sound from speakers. tried all the sliders - balance, treble etc, all worked beautifully.

tried turntable, nothing (just low level non amplified playing).

Now, also in the box was a cheap little preamp type thing - 230v, no badge, just L-R in, L-R out, with 5 pin Din to phono plug convertors. Tried putting that in line, nothing. But I assumed that the Beomaster is the amplifier too? Does the working radio mean that the amplifier is okay?

So any ideas? I'm willing to send the Beomaster off to an expert to look into further, just wanted to make sure there aren't any other checks I can do first.

Really appreciate any help you can

Thanks, Iain.

from experience....

did you plug the beogram into the right socket?

(oops, did that once and started of on a repair journey which was not necessary...)

Hi Marc, yes pretty sure I did, has little O with a dash symbol, as opposed to 0_0 which I take to be a Cassette recorder. Tried both actually just to be sure :)

Thanks.

Just to double check a couple things, the non-amplified sound you hear is coming from the turntable and not the speakers? When you press PH does it light up above the PH?

What happens if you fit the external amplifier and then connect to the Tape input of the Beomaster (and press tape)?

Martin / Peter

Yes the relevant red light comes on when the corresponding button is pushed.

Have now tried connecting the turntable direct to the Tape connection & pressing Tape. Music now playing through the speakers but NOT at great volume. With the volume turned right up (btw its a mistake to then choose FM as I did. Very loud.) you can make it out. It's greater than just turntable noise.

Thanks, Iain

Martin - did as you suggested. Great volume out of 1 speaker. to complicate matters the cable i have here is a din to 4 phono plugs. amp has only 2 sockets. White plug in & out ives 1 speaker. Can't find a combination to get output to the other speaker. Also, swapped the speaker at the Beomaster to make sure it wasn't the speaker and the opposite one worked (kinda knew that from the FM test though).

Cheers, Iain

Sorry for the multiple posts, keep trying different options.

Right, made some kind of progress, full speaker output using white & yellow leads (I thought yellow was video). So it works via the Tape input but not the Phono. Does that narrow it down any?

Many thanks

An easy scenario is that the contacts on the receivers phono input are dirty and not making connection at all, you could try using some electrical contact cleaner in the input jack and putting the din connector in and out several times.

My bet is something in the phono stage of the receiver isn't right and that is why the phono preamp was being used when this was put away because the phono stage in the BM 1900, when working, is very pleasant.

Just to finish off this thread can I ask a few questions please:-

Turntable is working great via preamp and Tape connection on Beomaster. Ok to leave it like that?

Any ideas as to why the Phono input doesn't work? and lastly

general maintenance of Beogram 1100 - what should I be doing to give it some tlc?

many thanks for help so far

Iain

1. It'll be fine.
2. That'll have to be diagnosed in the Beomaster
3. If it works - the best you can do is nothing.

Many thanks Martin. The combination really does give a tremendous sound, so pleased with them.
