I assume that will work if you have a "HomeKit hub" somewhere, like Homepod or AppleTV, where you have set BS2 as one of the speakers. So that would mean that e.g AppleTV (and AppleMusic) would be the source and BS2 "just a speaker".

So having done a bit of reading, this is the way i think it will work....
- Airplay 2 speakers will appear in the Home app
- that will include 4th generation Apple TVs
So with respect to voice activation, Siri should be able to trigger Apple Music / Podcasts to those speakers that appear in the Home app.
Whether the Home app allows grouping sets of speakers, i dont know i.e. will the voice activation "play something in lounge + kitchen" work?...assume it should, but i haven't played with HomeKit stuff.....
If a 4th gen Apple TV is one of your Airplay 2 devices, will voice activating it switch a BeoVision to the Apple TV input.....hopefully yes with HDMI-CEC on......
Will be interesting for Apple Music / Podcast users......no voice activation for anything else, TuneIn, DLNA NAS, other streaming services........but there is Alexa for that i guess......
Sandyb:I was told just a software update by my dealer today - dealers were sent a long email last night with upcoming updates and some information about AP2.....guess they all read it slightly differently! Who knows but I'd be surprised if every AP capable speaker requires hardware, maybe older ones, but surely not something as recent as the BS1/2, but we'll have to wait to find out....
vlohjr1:Been told by my dealer that most likely hardware upgrade required for ap2
When a dealer says 'most likely', to me it means that he doesn't know for sure.

There is a tv - and there is a BV
I find it remarkable, that noone asked about or talked about the protocol used for AirPlay 2.
As we know/should know distributing sound on a network causes traffic.
The current version of AirPlay uses ALAC 16/44.1, which means that the stream is uncompressed.
When you using AirPlay 2 will be able to distribute sound to multiple receivers (question: can you have 2 different AirPlay 2 streams going on at the same time as we can with eg TuneIn streams etc with the NL-protocol?), will that still be uncompressed audio?
Or did they change something there - in order to get a better stability especially in wireless networks - maybe now using (data-) compression?
This might (?) be of importance, when we talk about which devices already support the 2-standart (or just need a sw update to do so).
Another possibility might be that the stream is received directly to the added device (like with Chromecasting and Spotify Connect)?
This seems to be the way the PodHome speaker works.
In this case the (internal) traffic on the network would be lesser than if the stream is distributed from one device to another device (like now with AirPlay). And it might also be possible to turn off the device, that (via the Home app) was used for initiating the stream - and this again would lead to lesser use of power of an iDevice).
Very interesting to learn more about how the new AirPlay version works :-)
Would be interesting if anyone has hints to (knowledge of) this theme?
Libratone to support AirPlay 2 on 2015 ZIPP devices. B&O is so far mum.
Libratone June 6 posted this message on Facebook:"Want to learn more about Apple’s AirPlay 2? At Libratone, we’re excited to announce that we'll support the new AirPlay 2 technology. At 12:00 CEST today – direct from our headquarters in Copenhagen – we'll give you a live breakdown of the upcoming features. Stay tuned!"
June 7, Libratone released this press release:http://hexus.net/ce/items/audio-visual/106750-libratone-bring-airplay-2-support-lineup-home-speakers/
"A free software update will be released later this year to bring support for AirPlay 2 to the entire Libratone ZIPP range".The ZIPP range were launched Fall 2015. There are more details on their Facebook page.
From the iMore AirPlay 2 FAQ page: "So the AirPlay speaker I own now won't work?It could, after an update ...Libratone ... even confirmed on Twitter that it could add AirPlay 2 support to the $269 ZIPP and $199 ZIPP Mini with a firmware update....Bang &Olufsen's own multiroom speaker system already supports AirPlay, and offers a variety of shapes, sizes, and price points, but the company is so far mum on if and when those would get AirPlay 2 support."

This video will answer all of these questions for you: https://developer.apple.com/videos/play/wwdc2017/509/
Great - thanks for that link.
I was looking for something like that - which probably wasn't online at that time.
'Enhanched buffering' seems to be a keyword.
As this is more for the building of the app (with support for AirPlay 2) I am still looking for something about how AirPlay 2 is handled in the receiving devices.
'Enhanced buffering' seems to be a keyword.
And by the way - welcome to Beoworld.
Has anyone heard any rumors about support of existing devices? Saw B&W announced that existing line-up will not have airplay 2 support.
I am about to pull the trigger on another BS1 and BS2, but want to wait until I see confirmation they will see airplay 2 support.
I'm not sure how valuable rumors with be to help with your decision to buy another BS1 and BS2. There has been much speculation but until we hear from B&O we don't know what this means for the existing line. My guess is Apple would have had to have released the information of AirPlay 2 to to companies this time last year, for BS 1 and BS2 to be compatible, which I doubt. I'm not really sure what AirPlay 2 brings us over the current AirPlay.... B&O already offers multi room with AirPlay, and I could always select multiple speakers through the AirPlay icon. As long as the original AirPlay works the way it does today I will be happy. I have the features I need and want. Of course my understanding of AirPlay 2 is very limited.
@Mark-N
AirPlay 2 is important for those, who focus more on AirPlay than on NL.
Some people wan't to be able to integrate other AirPlay 2 devices into their setup, maybe having just one B&O device.
This sure is legitimate and B&O (and we) should be happy, even if they sell 'only one' NL device to a costumer.
It is important, that the NL devices (will/must) have support for AirPlay 2 - just like there is support for Chrome casting - in order to be as versatile as possible.
The B&O devices must - from their functionallity - appeal to as many costumers as possible.
But you are right - we, who see these devices as an integrated part of a B&O multiroom setup, probably could live without AirPlay 2.
It seems to me I already have multi-room capability with AirPlay. I can bring up Apple's Remote App (which I normally do), press the AirPlay icon, select Multiple, and then check the devices I want to play. They play in sync in different rooms. While I currently have all B&O devices this does work with a mixture, I've done it before. Pehaps the AirPlay icon doesn't work the same with each application, but I don't see why it couldn't???
Seems that you are airplaying from iTunes.
If not, please tell us more about how to choose multiple receivers using the Remote App.
steve1977:Naim and libratone have announced that their old devices will be airplay2 compatible via software upgrade. so, maybe also old b&o devices. fingers crossed!
Strange that B&O doesn't communicate and stay silent... If the old BS would be compatible I guess that they would be happy and proud to tell it!

All of my music (and music related video) is on a Mac mini iTunes server. I have a couple of iPods with a small subset of my music that I use for Bluetooth and car use. I have been using the multi-room capabilities of iTunes before I had all B&O equipment and the BeoMusic app. I've been doing a little reading on AirPlay 2 so my understanding is a little better. Luckily for what I have read, the existing AirPlay functionality will still work, but the functionality that I enjoy with iTunes will be expanded to other apps, plus the ability of "other" iDevices to add to the playlist. Great for parties I guess. It would be nice if the BeoSound 1/2, M5, and maybe some of the older devices can be updated, but if not, the new functionality won't be much of a loss for me.
With no word from B&O one way or the other on existing compatibility, I wonder if this would cause a pause in sales. Probably the knowledge of AirPlay 2 is still quite limited.
BeoNut since '75
elephant:If airplay2 is all about the iOS source being able to target multiple speakers then maybe there is nothing that the speakers (or bang and Olufsen) have to do? BeoNut since '75
AngloApulian:Watching Apple's WWDC video on AirPlay 2, there seemed to be an emphasis on the new protocol requiring the speaker hardware to support longer buffering of the stream being received.
Any news from B&O on Airplay 2?
It has now been 1 month since the announcement - very slow action from B&O.
Sandyb:Might well be an Apple issue / restriction.....the home posted speaker isn't due for a while, so I wouldn't expect to hear anything soon.....
Airplay 2 comes with iOS 11 which is already in public beta! Apple is simply producing a speaker that supports it. By default, it's an API in the OS which should ship within the next 6-8 weeks.
Sandyb:Is the airplay 2 protocol in the ios11 beta? Seen quite a few early reviews of the beta capabilities, but no mention of Airplay 2....of course the reviewers won't have Airplay 2 speakers to test with........I suspect we won't hear much from the speaker manufacturers themselves until they release their new updated hardware, which might not be for a few months yet........not clear to me the voice activation/ assistant part will extend beyond the HomePod itself, so personally speaking it's of passing interest, but let's see.....
Sandyb:Is the airplay 2 protocol in the ios11 beta?
It is indeed. But, as you say, no speakers yet. No-one is going to release a new speaker until the new OS leaves beta, either. But fully expect them to be out in September.
I was thinking of the same...
Although I did read somewhere that for recent speakers a software update could work, I'm not very optimistic as B&O didn't tell anything about any update do support Airplay2... Some other brands at least communicated. I keep my fingers crossed to see if my Beosound 2 will support it. If not I may sell it and turn definitively the B&O page.
Beolab 50, Beolab 8000 x 2, Beolab 4000 x 2, BeoSound Core, BeoSound 9000, BeoSound Century, BeoLit 15, BeoPlay A1, BeoPlay P2, BeoPlay H9 3rd Gen, BeoPlay H6, EarSet 3i, BeoVision Eclipse Gen 2 55", BeoPlay V1-40, BeoCom 6000 and so much else :)
Michael:Some producers as libratone already have updates for some speakers coming out so it's possible to some extent to upgrade speakers.
As you told, on their site, Libratone confirm a software update will be soon released to enable Airplay2. I don't understand B&O's silence... This is not good as people may not buy now and people like me having an Airplay '1' speaker (like BS2) may feel left aside by B&O and loose even more faith in the brand.
