Hi

I'm considering to buy a second hand BeoSound 5 encore. For the best audio quality I'd like to use an external DAC.

Is it possible to connect an usb-DAC to the encore ? I guess this is not supported......

I doubt that it's possible. The USB port on the Encore is for music storage only.

Hi gebi,

Hungedu is correct, Beosound 5 Encore doesn't have a digital output.  Beomaster 5 would be a better option if you wish to use an external DAC, as this has a co-axial digital output.

Kind regards, Steve.

Even with a Beosound 5 and Beomaster 5, I wouldn't bother with an external DAC and deem it to be a waste of money. This is to my mind audiophile nervosa and I've yet to see any evidence that a person blind folded could reliably and statistically hear a difference between a competently designed machine with an inbuilt DAC and an external DAC costing tens of thousands of dollars. They often have the same chipsets as the cheaper DACs you find in your TV, DVD, CD player. I have listened to some of these super expensive DACs and I couldn't hear a difference even after concnetraring very hard for several hours. NOS DACs do sound different but only in as much as the treble top end seems slightly rolled off. I would save the money, spend the bulk of your budget on the 'best speakers' you can afford and place them carefully in your room.

I happily agree on that!

And avoiding the hassle of having to control volume on an external device and of connecting speakers there, is worth a lot.

@gebi Get better speakers/the BL's, that will fit your room...and enjoy the Encore.
