I have a lovely condition rosewood beocord 8000 that won't work, maybe someone on here can shed some light on the cause of the issues,

symptom, when I try and play a tape it moves the mechanism into position with a loud noise and then disengages immediately new belts have been fitted I am not sure what the issue is

thanks for any info

Does the motor run when out of standby?

Keith is updating the server and fiddling around backstage - as he mentions today.
Perhaps that's why.

Okay then.

I suspect Beo3000 will likely find a dead motor or a bad fuse (wrong belts? Stick out tongue). Possibly both, unfortunately.

The best replacement motor is not cheap, but if you want to avoid the two-euro Mabuchi ones, go to TapeHeads.

yes, I think it might be the motor, it does not run at all I have an old tape motor that might work in it, thanks for the link

As Jacques suggests, check the fuse on the regulator board (just below the motor).
The motor MUST be servo-regulated. And capable of handling apprx 15V.
But check the fuse first -most likely to be the problem, particularly if the old belts tangled and blocked the motor.
Sometimes even the fuse holders are found bad.

Be careful, most decks have their motors the other side and are CW types. You need a CCW type. You can use the TapeHeads one with two 4007 diodes in series - although it could work up to 15V.

Attempt n°5 Angry

Did you ever manage to repair this, I have a beocord 8004, it engages and disengages several times before eventually engaging, once engaged it works fine and will play the whole side of the tape.
Same thing if you try to rewind or fast forward, doesnt engage first time. Takes a few to 10 times to engage.

Make sure the little, metal tape guide didn't get bent where it is interfering with the engaging of the tape heads to the cassette. Sometimes that gets out of alignment and the Beocord exhibits behavior like you are seeing.

Thanks, I will have a look at this carefully! I don't think I bent anything there but it is possible whilst the transport was upside down. I did place it on a flannel to try to protect it everything. Would it likely be bent too far inwards or outwards?

On a side note, the little brass fan type thing, that spins around as you eject a tape. What exactly does that do? Is it a type of governor to slow down the tape eject?

Downwards. So it hits on the front edge of the cassette.
Check if it will engage with no cassette inserted.

Yes, It's an airbrake.

Had a look at this. It seems fine I think.. I'll attach a photo when I'm back on a proper computer.

It doesn't try to enagage without a tape in there.

The intention was to see, if it would engage and stay engaged if it didn't hit the cassette, so you will have to hold the switch
at the back of the cassette tray to simulate a tape inserted.

I pushed the switch (the light comes on and stays on solid, and without a tape in there it does nothing so I imagine this switch is okay?)... the same behavior is observed when I manually push the switch and try to play the tape, clicking in and out a few times and then engaging and playing.  :(

Again once playing/fast forwarding etc, it will play happily.

When I replaced the belts does anything need to be lined up for it to work correctly? I couldn't see a reason why anything there makes a difference be but best to check.

Nothing needs aligning when replacing only the belts.
If you also replaced the idler rubber parts, the brake arms etc. needs to be on the correct sides of their respective flanges - the
front right one being the one most often ending up on the wrong side, resulting in it getting bend and losing its small felt pad.

When the deck tried to play, does the take-up reel rotate and take up - even for just a brief moment?

Hi Martin,

That's great, hopefully all else is okay as the mechanism moved freely and I only replaced the belts.

Yes it takes up around a 1/4 turn I would estimate however the head contacts the tape for literally a fraction of a second.

Thanks a lot for the help :)
