Nice to see B&O gets a mention in the main tent speach !

New connector called "Lightning".

All-digital, 8-signal design. Adaptive interface, improved durability, reversible, 80% smaller.

Bose, JBL, B&W, B&O and others are already working on the new connector.

Apple creating a "bunch of accessories" to hook up to old equipment.

That's the iPhone 5.

It is good news for Apple and maybe some good news for B&O.  I will be ordering the new iPhone 5 in a few days but have no plans for any B&O product purchases.  Maybe others will discover some B&O products but not much looks very interesting for now.

meh!

There's something incredibly weird about a significant chunk of the population watching a live broadcast about the launch of a (minor upgrade to a) mobile phone!

As a thought experiment - just how ordinary would it have to be to stop those that will queue to buy it?

Also Samsung & Nokia holds the majority of LTE patents (Apple do own some...........that they bought from a third party), let's see what the righteous think about patent infringement now  - ding ding, round 2.

The only thing that matters is that there was a huge Beoplay A8 on the big screen. The rest to me personally, is irrelevant.

The huge selling point here is that the phone has changed shape - so unlike the 4 to 4S "upgrade",  everyone will be able to see you have spent more money and have the lastest model. I can see the queues forming from here!!!Yes - thumbs up

So its a bit like when you see people like yourself maybe, go out and spend money on new cars when they change shape etc!

I used to work with a retail buyer who was always denouncing brands or labels, and the "sad" people who spend all their money buying them just for the sake of them. When i asked her then if she wouldn't mind if i go out and remove the Audi badge off the front of her new car, you should have seen her face as she backtracked in panic.

We are all guilty of this trait in one way or another, B&O being a prime example i would suggest. That doesn't make anyone a part of an evil conspiracy. I've personally tried the new Nokia phone, and although it wasn't a bad phone it just wasn't as good as the Iphone i had swapped it for.

I'd get a Samsung Galaxy S3 except for the fact that its made of cheap nasty plastic, and i don't want to spend the next 2 years carrying something i use so much at home and work, being so cosmetically dull. My airline as most airlines today, use Apple products from the office to the flight deck. Not an evil conspiracy of 6th form Apple freaks, just the most integrated hardware they can get. With no competitors offering such a wide spectrum of devices able to seamlessly integrate with each other, its hardly Apples fault the competition(Sony maybe) don't offer this range of goods.

http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/11/american-airlines-becomes-first-carrier-to-use-ipad-through-whole-flights/

I'm personally not emotionally involved in the whole Apple thing, so i won't be labelling anyone anything that is potentially abusive ie "zealots" (i'm Jewish by the way) but i buy it because their is nothing better cosmetically or otherwise.

I don't, I buy a nearly new car when my existing car gets too old.

Not that I have an S3, but "cosmetically dull" is a matter of opinion - in a side by side I think the S3 is actually better looking than the iPhone 4 or 5, but you're right it is made of plastic, however I don't have a problem with that, it's fit for purpose.

There will be lots of people who buy the new phone and use it as such, they won't wear it on their arms or feel the need to show everyone they meet or tell them, at the top of their voices in pubs etc., why they simply must buy one, and to them I apologise - unfortunately there are far, far too many who will and it is these that wind folk up.

Chris,

Very nicely written.  It is indeed difficult to understand why someone would use words like  zealot or sinister to describe a person who just happens to like a certain product.

As an engineering type of person, I reviewed the video of the entire Apple presentation.  I was impressed with the solutions to many of the technical problems they encountered.  Each individual will have reasons to either like the iPhone 5 or not like it.  I already have an iPhone 4s and need the LTE data network capabilities.  I live in a large congested city where the 3G wireless data is completely inadequate.  The extra cost will be worth it to me.

My Beolit 12, won't play music better than before but it will look nicer with the iPhone 5..

As I have mentioned in other posts, the Bang & Olufsen brand is largely unknown.in the United States.  For B&O and the A8 to be mentioned in the presentation is significant.  Maybe B&O will have increased business for their products in North America.

Looks like B&O's A8 is ahead of the competition with the removable iPad/iPhone dock connector. Wink

It's a phone! It is a slight improvement on the last one and no doubt it will be easy to use and hence will be attractive to many. I have an iPhone - a free 3GS and I love it as it is simple to use and does everything I want. When 4G becomes prevalent in this area, I would consider one as my broadband is awful. However the fact that BT have no interest in approving broadband in my area suggests that 4G will be some time coming!! Smile

Where in the keynote was the A8?

I agree. At the moment i'm happy with my 4S so i won't be changing anytime soon.

It's odd isn't it that some brands etc bring out such suspicion or venom from a vocal minority. Plasma v LCD is one thats springs to mind. After all the technical guff i'm brainwashed with about Plasma, personally i don't like it. So i buy what suits me, and is it happens the vast majority of people buy the same(can we all be so wrong?) If you enjoy it, great but......

Rugby League v Rugby Union is another. Union supporters don't constantly drone on about how rubbish/boring League is, but League supporters i meet always come out with the same drivel about how theirs is better. The fact that 99% of the planet plays and prefers Union says it all, but i watch what i like and isn't that all what matters.

Anyway, time to connect my anal probe to Apple headquarters for my latest brainwashing session, before my next and inevitable Spanish adventureWink

ps Michael i can't find it today. It might have been the Telegraph!

I agree and my business is tech publishing. What surprises me is that an Apple keynote was headline across the online version of most of the UKs news websites. Sure it's thinner, a little lighter etc, but it's not radically different and the operating system is iOS 6, which will also work on the 4 and 4S, so it's not as if it's exclusive to the iPhone 5.

It will be a while before 4G is everywhere. I still have issues connecting to 3G between the South West and London. Here in Bath, there are areas in the centre of town where you can't get a 3G connection at all and never have been able to. And don't forget UK providers like to charge for data, so it's not as if we'll all be streaming movies on our 4G connection any time soon.

A little challenge for B&O: the current removable connector just acts as a sound pass-through. The 30pin connector also has analogue audio. The new connector only has digital out. So B&O will have to invent something that converts digital to analogue inside the connector... Or... use the headset connector... So.. they're in for a challenge!

Steve Jobs and his reality distortion field was sadly missed , some of the plebs who were on stage had the charisma of a dead haddock.

The guy who introduced the new ipods was the most boring presenter I've ever seen.

As much as I hate windoze I have to admit at least Ballmer is a character.

Pretty sure the A8 uses the digital out from the old dock connector, so don't think that they wil have to change that much!

Indeed ! Good that B&O can make this claim !

We are very excited about Apple's new Lightning connector and are proud to announce that as the world’s first music system, BeoPlay A8 will be compatible with the new connector. Unparalleled flexibility of BeoPlay A8 allows you freedom to choose how to listen to your digital music: Wirelessly or docked through either the new or previous connector.

All existing and new customers of BeoPlay A8 will be offered the new iPhone 5 dock connector free of charge. We call it the “A8 dock upgrade program”.

(apart from some poor grammar)

Congratulations Tue & B&O !

Now I wonder ... could the new earpods be similar to something we all know ?

Apple website:

The speakers inside Apple EarPods have been engineered to minimize sound loss and maximize sound output. So you get high-quality audio that’s just as impressive as what you’d hear from more expensive headphones.

...

Highlights

  • Designed by Apple
  • Deeper, richer bass tones

MacRumors' live transcript of the keynote event:

Now offering new headphones, called EarPods. "Doing a great headphone is hard, because ears are really, really challenging because everyone's ears are different."

In the works for three years. Includes in-line microphone and controls. "Look like no earphone you've ever seen before."

Has a directed speaker port that points forward into the ear canal. Doesn't create a seal the way other in-ear headphones do. A port in the back for mid-range, one in the stem, and the main port pointing to the ear canal. All to maximize airflow for sound quality.

It doesn't mean that all those are standing in a queue as soon as the product is released. In many households, Apple makes part of their audio/video systems. And if Apple release new products, it can be interesting. It certainly does for me!

This is probably one of the best remarks I have seen on this board lately.  I purchased a new iPhone 5 today and will have it in two weeks.  I don't usually comment on a price paid but my new iPhone 5 was $89.  This was because I had coupons from Apple for recycling an iphone and iPod.  It also included a discount from my telephone carrier and mileage points for the airline I use.  Not bad for a new music system.

What I love about an Apple store is when I walk in there, it is full of young, energetic, life loving people from practically every country in the World who are full of excitement, wonder and inspiration.

Surely that is an amazing thing in this very dark economic climate and is indeed very refreshing!

And incredibly nice of Apple to mention B&O as it's really helped put them on the map!

Anyway the Apple haters can go and buy a used Nokia 3210 brick phone ;)

A guy at the gym this evening has ordered one and sold his old 3 year old iPhone3s for £150 on Ebay! Ha, what a business man!

They sold out worldwide in one hour  ONE HOUR

So much for the hype - there has to be some substance behind it - and once you've used a Mac or almost any other Apple product , you realise there most definitely is.

If not , why does everyone copy Apple ? even B&O !
