Any suggestions? I tried a wet sponge with a little dishwashing liquid to clean but the column looks more or less the same. I don't seem to be able to remove fingerprints from the metal unfortunately. Thank you...

Have you tried industrial alcohol ? Do try it locally first.

I use autosol metal polish for every alumium column (from penta to beolab 8000) with excellent results.
You will remove your fingerprints easily. You will need some elbow grease.
