Hi All,
I've got a question about Beolab speakers and would like to know your opinions.
I'm in my 40's and the music i mostly listen to is dance music with heavy bass, groups like Faithless, New Order, famous DJ's like DJ Tiesto, I mainly use a Technic's 1210 mk2 turntable, CD's from the 9300 and mp3's from my phone.
So i have a Beocenter 9300 and a couple of years ago i brought a pair of Beolab 4000, they sound good, until you crank up the sound level......so i purchased a Beolab 2, great for the low bass.........after that i wanted the mid to high range better so i purchased a 7.1 sound bar, that did the trick.........After that i wanted the music louder so i purchased another set of Beolab 4000 which increased the sound level.
The max sound level from the Beolab 4000 is 97db, I believe when you double the speakers you increase the db levels by 3 db, so adding the 7.1 and 2nd pair of 4000's should now get me 103 max db?
The room i have all of this stuff in is an annex building away from any neighbours so i'm not annoying anyone, the building is a brick building with plasterboard walls and real oak flooring.
So recently i've been thinking about selling all of the speakers and getting a pair of Beolab 9's will it sound any better/louder??
Considering most of the music played is bass heavy will i still need the Beolab 2 ???
What do you think?
Thanks
Get a pair of the BL50'ies.
MM
There is a tv - and there is a BV
MP3 on a BL9 or BL50???????????????
What do you mean??
The MP3's i do play are 320 bit rate.
Most of the music i play is vinyl & CD's
What do you think of my Beolab setup against using a pair of Beolab 9's.
Thanks.
Hi pauljrog,
I went through a similar process a few years ago, until I settled on Beolab Pentas for the main speakers in my workshop, with Beolab 3000 (similar sound to the 4000s) for the rear speakers. The Beolab 2 was then redundant, as the Pentas give more than enough bass on their own.
Whilst Beolab 50 are certainly on my "lottery win" shopping list, Pentas are my first "real world" choice every time!
Kind regards, Steve.
Steve.

In my opinion, and as a former BeoLab 9 owner, the Lab 9s will be perfectly suitable for your requirements. A highly recommended speaker.
B&O products are V1-32, BS2, H95, E8 and an Essence remote.11-46 now replaced with Sony A90J 65”, Sony HT-A9, Sony UBP-X800M2 and Sony SRS-NS7.

You asked for something with plenty of sound pressure and a low distortion!
That is what you would get with the BL50 - regardless of the source (MP3, vinyl or whatever).
However, one step on your way to these ;-) you are good adviced with what Steve wrote in his post.
Maybe adding a second sufwoofer would be worth considering.
As for the BL9's, yes - but just as with any other speaker/speakers combination, you should try them out at home first.
I think that you meant 320Kbs. OK, but the difference between a CD and MP3 files, even if they are 320 Kbs, is there. BL9, I own them myself, are very good, but when I hear Spotify or TuneIn, or MP3-files, I often think that my speakers have a problem!

Good morning
Well it sounds as if we are listening to the same music and perhaps at the same volume levels.
I love nothing more than having friends over and the ability to crank up the music without distortion and quality of the sound must be amazing.
My journey was an interesting one as is below so you can see:
Lab 8000 + Lab2
Amazing setup sounds great but did not pack enough of a punch.
The lab 8000 has a great range but for Bass i needed Lab2, I find the lab2 amazing for films with its rumble and amazing lower end, the problem I had was when playing faster punchy dance music it would rumble on and didnt quite sound right, its almost as if its to slow for the music I listen too.
so I purchased some:
Beolab 9's
Wow what an amazing set of speakers these are and I still have them but not in my "Party" room
I had these and they pump out some sound the problem I found was the speakers kept going into protection mode after some heavy bass music like usher for example, the speakers perhaps were being turned up higher because they are projecting sound at my knees, I stil have these today but on my BV7
So I purchased
Beolab 12-3
Lets just say these are amazing but had the same issue as the lab 9's any real bass and the orange light come on, worst part was my friends were over and they said wow they look amazing but can you turn them up.....
So then
B&W CM9 + AMP
I took the plunge and tried to move away thinking perhaps I just need some good old fashioned passive speakers, these were great until new years and then easter weekend when one of the four woofers blew and I have to replace them at £90 a pop. they worked really well but would not manage
so then
Beolab Penta 3
These I purchased two years ago and refurbished them with new foam surrounds and frets.
They have once or twice clipped a little but generally you know when its happening because the sound dips.
They are by far the most powerful speakers with great sound great bass, they are relentless and never let me down, I am moving soon and having the discussion will they fit in the dining room and I cannot bear to part with them. Maybe SHAPE will be the next step but fact remains the 20 year old Penta outperform every other speaker I have had.
Hope this helps

I am also on the Penta 3 team
They sound really really great, mine have gotten the complete overhaul with new caps in filters and amplifiers. It is really a fantastic speaker..
/Jacob
My changes have all been cosmetic.
I do need to have the amplifiers and crossovers taken out and checked but not got to it yet
Also mine have been through the wars a little but they sit in the corners so cannot be seen.
One day they will go to a panel beaters for new body's
Or I will sell them and get a pair already done
Thanks for all your messages, really appreiciate it.
So looks like Beolab Pentas mk3 then, if i decide to do that i'll have to make sure thay have been refoamed.
But.... thinking about it.... now thinking about pushing the boat out.... and getting a pair of Beolab 5's !!!
Still need to get the wife on board first, fingers crossed.
Paul.

Duels:You could always push the wife out and then get the BL5s on board
Beolab 9 has about 700 watt each. The Beolab 4000 has about 50 watt each. Beolab 9 can play very loud, and you dont need a subwoofer. There is enough bass in the Beolab 9. They go down to 30 Hz with full power.

I can attest to the low end power of the BL9's they're remarkably able in the bass department. Zero need for a dedicated sub. Quite a few members on these forums believe the BL9's to be utterly sublime, one of the best speakers B&O have created.

Agreed. I have a pair myself and don't find the need for a sub.
For a brief time, between selling BL8000 & BL2 I tried, for fun, connecting BL2 & BL9s. Actually I couldn't say I preferred the point source of a BL2 vs basically stereo sub response of BL9.
BL9 aren't very 'showy' but certainly can go quite loud, excellent value for the money. I passed on BL5 because they're simply too large for my space.
OK, if your looking at watts then lets have a look -
Beolab 9 - 600W per speaker = 1200W
My set up -
Beolab 4000 - 59 watts per speaker, x4 = 236W
Beolab 7.1 - 720W total (6 drivers)
Beolab 2 - 850W total
Grand total - 1806W
Please note, all these above figures come from Beoworld.
So looking at -
Bass, Beolab 9 = 800W, my setup = 1190W
Mid range Beolab 9 = 200W, my setup = 240W
Treble = Beolab 9 = 200W, my set up = 376W
I'm sure some people who know a lot more about speakers might have something to say about the above figures as I've been reading some B&O technical pages recently and I appreciate they are very technical and complicated boxes.
The proof of the pudding is in the eating.
And you must 'eat the pudding' at home to decide, what is best for you there.

I completely agree, it is very loud, after an hours listening to dance music my ears are ringing!!, But loudness is not the only thing, I want better quality and depth, so beolab 5's are being considered.
I will do some homework, maybe go and have a listen to them, and read a lot of posts about them on here, great forum!!!
A somwwhat differet answer here.
I have used my RL7000 for parties with fine results, but most of the time when I need it to get really loud for parties then i use professionel speakers for example db Technologies Opera 15.
They are build to sound good when played loud. Sure my RL7000 sounds better at low volumes, but the Operas shine at loud levels. They also have automatic volume adjustment if someone accidentially connects an mp3 device at full volume.
Sometimes one set of speakers cannot solve all use scenarios.

Great news, talked to the wife, went through some numbers and I'm getting a pair of Beolab 5's !!!!!
OMG, I can't believe it!! I went to my local shop over the weekend to listen to a pair, and although the wife doesn't really like the look of them a future purchase is on the cards.
Im in no rush. I have a budget I need to keep to so looking at a pair later in the year.
So once I have them my old beolab speakers will be up for sale.
Good call!
Good news,
Found a pair of ex shop display Beolab 5's in my local B&O shop, they were at a good price, 6 years old in great condition, comes with 3 years warranty and free delivery.
So next week i'm taking delivery of my new speakers, YEAH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've now got my old speakers up for sale.
Congratulations Paul
Buy yourself a pair of Penta's, or BL5's. Update them properly and you will have one of the finest speakers made with well balanced sound.
Didn't read the next pages...
Good choice!!
More secondlife BL5's will be available after the release and selling of the BL50's.
