Having taken delivery of the kindly donated Beocord 5000, compliments of Mr Roast, I have been itching to take it apart......this was something I thought would be useful for parts when I get hold of Peters Beocord.....however this unit looks in pretty good condition, well dusty and I can see the belts are shot.
Opening her up for a closer inspection nothing jumps out as being completely goosed......
I did however find the counter belt hiding beneath the main PCB....quite a long way from home.
I have spent sometime reading Rudy's blogs on this unit and taking his advice I have put a paint spot on the tape mechanism fixing screws before removing them, no white paint so black will have to do!
And the same for the eject arm
That will have to do today while I wait for the paint to dry, meanwhile I will need a new set of belts (Martin can you oblige) also do you do a cap kit for this model?
I will also remove the rubber pinch rollers and send them of to Terrys Rubber Rollers (sounds suspect I know) to have them refurbished, it sound like these may be the reason Peters unit chews tapes?
Glad she arrived safely! I love these decks - so solidly built!
I found that on the first of my 4705s the eject mechanism was a bit iffy after initial refitting - sometimes it wouldn't latch shut on both sides correctly although there was nothing 'evidently' wrong, eventually got it working but there were some choice words that evening!
I agree Kudos to Rudy - his videos are incredibly helpful - as was Martin's comment on another thread about working inside a plastic bag, particularly with all the tiny circlips!
I'll be eagerly watching this space! Keep up the good work
decided to remove the pinch roller arms with the cassette mechanism still in place, thought it would be easier to handle if it where secure. The circlips came away reasonably easy, though I was surprised to discover the posts didn't have a recess machined into them for the circlips to locate into....thay are perfectly smooth.
the cassette mechanism came out easily too following Rudys blog, remove 3 screws and 2 connectors and away it came.
Pinch rollers themselves next up, again following Rudys blog I utilised a bench vice, a nail and a very small socket to ease the pins out. They where in quite tight but popped out without too much stress on my part.
Need to get these rollers packaged up and in the post to Terrys for rebuilding.......got the new belts on order from Martin, will spend the next couple of days getting all the dust and debris out of the rest of the machine

These are splendidly engineered decks no doubt; in many ways they are the equivalent of the Beogram 4000 in that they are massively over engineered. Perhaps if they had marketed the simplified version found in the Beocenter 4000, they could have sold it for much less and probably made it more reliable! This was also a staggeringly expensive machine - in today's money, £2,216. The Beogram 4000 would cost a mere £1528 and the Beomaster 4000 of the same time £1651. It is, as I have said before, the only piece of kit that my trusty old dealer refused to service as he felt they were simply uneconomical to fix. I think you need to be a real enthusiast and be slightly mad to have one. !!

I prefer to think we are just a little eccentric.......I have ordered two sets of belts from Martin, one for this one and one for yours, I would have ordered a set of pinch rollers for yours too but I need to send Terry the old ones first ;¬)
Craig
the clean up of the interior of the cabinet revealed the remains of savaged magnetic tape, there has been issues in the past so I feel justified in going the extra mile and mailing the rollers off to Terry....they left this evening and I don't expect them back for two weeks or thereabouts.
following a bit of a sweep and an air duster the insides have come up looking very nice
I am actually coming down to Fountains Abbey on Saturday - I could drop the Beocord in then - I cannot tell you a time really - I can leave it outside your house if you are not in - I will put it in a box! Obviously if you are away I can do it some other time. Will be accompanied by wife and three bassets so will be flying visit anyway!
Aha! I thought there was a bit of my Carly Simon Greatest Hits cassette missing! Can I have it back?
On a serious note I've been doing a bit of reading on some of the reel-to-reel/cassette forums out there and there's a product that seems to get good feedback in terms of rejuvenating the pinch rollers. It's called AF Platenclene (containing C11-15 iso-alkane) and is sold as a print roller cleaner and restorer for printers/photocopiers. I agree getting a fresh pair of rollers is best (and when funds allow will be my course of action) but as I have two pairs I thought I'd give it a go and feed back on the results.
Saturday would be fine Peter....don't think we are going anywhere, but if we do I will leave the gates open and you could leave it by the rear French windows if you don't mind?
I will let you know how I get on with the new rollers....I will be getting another set for Peters unit once I have stripped it down and removed the originals to send off to Terry.....
decided to take things on a little further and removed the cassette holder from the transporter, the turntable belt is so loose and baggy that when the motor is turned by hand it wont operate at all..........
another shot from a different angle....
In preparation for tomorrow, I have dug out the 5000, put a plug on it (!!) and somewhat to my surprise, it works - to an extent!! All lights appear to work, the machine will play back a cassette - I only used the headphone socket to listen with and with some dodgy U70 headphones - and it wasn't great but seemed to be correct speed and NR works. First tape sounded odd but realised that I had recorded this one with Dolby C!! Considering not used for about 10 years, not bad. The fast forward works but the reverse simply spools the right hand sprocket so winds the tape the wrong way in the shell - stopped doing that!! Not in bad shape either - rosewood finish with one very small chip at left top edge - keys flat, all markings OK and top panel clean and clear.
Is a T4715 serial number 1938032 SIGN ER (don't know what that means!)
All in all, in rather better condition than the Beomaster 6000 but I bet it has a few foibles. I know Tim remanufactured something in it so there will be a few not standard bits possibly but slightly sorry to see it go. However is rather taking up space and needs a 6000 to match! Will probably drop it in on way back from Studley Royal so will leave at French windows if you are out!
That's very generous of you....I look forward to the challenge, it will look very nice alongside the BM6000. I will be going to Northallerton tomorrow, leaving around 10:15ish....I will leave the gates open when I go.
Best regards Craig
Turntable belt looks well out of shape.........
How the thing works...

Jacques....
Thanks for that, it is such a cunning engineering solution. We have lost a lot with the demise of these machines.
Martins belts arrived in the week..........
Top belts first as It's already dismantled.....mechanism works nicely when turned by hand.
During re assembly spotted this microswitch wasn't operating, had to remove it and bend one of the arms slightly so it snapped back and forth when the cassette housing opened and closed.
Bottom cover removed....
The fly wheels look a little worse for wear......bit of a polish required.
Both will benefit from some fine grain polishing before replacement
Replaced the transport assembly back in and will have to wait for the pinch rollers to come back from Terrys rollers before I go any further, I have received Peters machine now and as I purchased two sets of belts, and practised on this machine, I will replace Peters belts whilst I wait for Terry.
Peters Machine....in very good shape cosmetically, well looked after it has to be said
Internally the usual build up of dust that forty or so years will provide.........
however I did spot these two fellows at large within the housing, not sure where they live just yet but I'm sure I will find out soon enough.
Manual rotation of the Take Up Motor pulley revealed that the free wheel mechanism has failed, seems to be stuck in one direction.....will investgate further when I have the transport system removed for belt replacement.
Removal of the transport mechanism revealed this brown/white wire had parted company with the connector strip, may have been my lifting of the transport mechanism that caused it of course......will require some work to re attach.
