Hi all,
It's been quite a long time so I hope I'm back for good although job keeps me occupied for many many hours per day.
Yesterday night, I tried to install a pair of Beolab Pentas MK1 I have, but never used before. There are a couple of issues that I'm not sure on how to handle:
1. One of the speakers, when plugged it says in orange on the screen "No Recording". Actually the word recording is blinking. The on/off indicator is very pale red or Green.
2. I tried to connect them with a Beosound 9000, through the speaker link cables, but although the one turns on, the sound does not come out. At the beginning I used a newer PL cable but nothing worked and then an older one such as the one used with MCL2P (Special fully shield I think).
3. The Speaker links I have, also have the line out connection. Should these be also used or the speakerlink connectors should be used only?
Please help as I would love to enjoy these lovely pair........
Best regards
Spiros
I would try a pair of plain 2 pin din speaker wires first and see if the speakers work. Forget the displays till then. Set the switches correctly on the front - I take it you have the manual? If the speakers work, the displays should be reasonably simple - I hope!!

The speakerlinkcable from the BS9000 splits the line level audio from the datasignals.
So therefore, you have to connect the rca connectors to the penta for the audio signal, where the speakerlink has to be connected for sending the right datasignals for the displays. The switch should in this case be set in the "line" option.
The manual was written years before BS9000 even existed, so it can't describe this setup. Since the Beosound doesn't have any power amplifiers and thus no speaker level outputs, your only option with Mk.I Pentas is feeding audio through the RCA connectors and switching the speakers to LINE mode. The sensitivity switch does nothing then.
As Beobuddy says, in this context the DINs are only used to feed data to the displays. Forget about them for now, and test that you get sound from both speakers.

Spiros:There is no line on the pentas but only link. Is this the one? Otherwise it does have off and auto which in any case do not give anything.....
Oh yes, AUTO should be the correct setting. And I was wrong about the sensitivity switch, it does work even with the line input. I guess medium setting would be fine.
Buzzing does indeed suggest that the speaker works but the input signal isn't correctly fed. Now I'm not sure anymore what kind of cable you have. You should have a Powerlink connector (round 8 pin) at one end, and an RCA plug + a four pin Speakerlink plug at the other, or what...? If you don't have the audio signal coming to the RCA socket on the speaker, it's not going to work.
I am not that familiar with the BS9000 but would you have any volume control at all this way ?

It has only Powerlink outputs; apparently the adapter splits the controlled L & R audio signals of PL into RCA plugs, and the DIN is only used for data as Beobuddy described. Volume works normally from the Beosound then. So once more, are the RCAs connected to the speakers?
Any Powerlink cable should work for audio with this kind of adapter, but the displays will only work with the fully connected cable... the one from the MCL2P should be fine. Don't worry yet about what the displays show or don't show, they work completely independently of the audio part (except for turning on/off with the rest of the speaker).
What I would try first would be to eliminate all the Speakerlink/Powerlink hassle, and try to feed the speakers directly from a laptop, some iDevice or whatever into the RCA connector (keep the volume low!). If the speakers play then, we would know at least something about where the problem is.
Hi,
I am struggling with the connections also. Is it possible to solder a powerlink female chassis in the amps? I will not using the speakerlink connections. I want to connect the penta's tp a BC2300.
Does some one has a schema to DIY speaker link to powerlink?
There's a short B&O cable that converts SL to PL. One set is on its way to mr. Spiros.

Spiros:Although I cannot try it now, I was told that I should have the PL MK2 instead of the newer ones as it does have a lack in the sound. Any ideas on that?
Active B&O speakers with display and PowerLink sockets need FULLY MOUNTED PowerLink Cables to transmit the additional display data andto trigger the built-in amp. The fully mounted (= all 8 pins connected) PL MK2 has been "discontinued" and has been replaced by (actually just re-named to):
5m PL-cable Ø3,5MM DIN-DIN black (B&O Item Nr 6271227, retails for approx 25 EUR) 10m PL-cable Ø3,5MM DIN-DIN black (B&O Item Nr 6271228, retails for approx 30 EUR)

Didn't he say earlier that he has that converter? This remote troubleshooting would be much easier if people agreed to describe what they have and what they don't have...
Spiros:Yeap. Correct I do have them but I seems that they have a problem therefore Leslie is sending another pair to try......that simple!
Very good - hope that solves the problem

It'll be much easier to just use the converter cable that was mentioned.

That would essentially mean a DIY Beolink Passive! You can't drive Speakerlink inputs without a power amplifier of sorts, and your Beocenter doesn't have one.

Did he said that he had an original one?

Spiros said:
"Cabling is ok as I use the special speakerlink to Powerlink converters."
which, to an innocent reader, suggests that he's sure that there's nothing wrong with that part
...but never mind.
That's right, however we had some chats previously and the one he had are self mades. But never mind!
