I did read online that you can use a Beolink Active 1636 to connect to a Beolab 3500 when using as a none link speaker to avoid the remote control setup every time. Is this true? Does anyone use this method?

Thanks.

Hi Chris,

Beolink Active cannot act as an Audio Master to trigger other Masterlink devices on a network.  However, later versions of the Beolink Converter (full type number 1161166) can do this.

Depending on the device to be used as your music source, you can then link the source to the Aux socket of the Converter and run a Masterlink cable between the Converter and the Beolab 3500:-

You would still need a B&O remote to activate the speaker before use.

Hi teunis,

When connecting the Beolab 3500 (both versions) via the Masterlink input, just use any source button as normal on the Beo4.

When connecting Beolab 3500 mk/1 or LCS9000 via the MCL input, please press MENU 0 4 GO on a Beo4 or MENU 0 4 PLAY on a Beolink 1000, or for Beolab 3500 mk.2 please press MENU MENU 0 4 GO on a Beo4 or MENU MENU 0 4 PLAY on a Beolink 1000 (please ensure that the "GO" or "PLAY" button is only pressed briefly).  Volume control is then managed from the connected device (eg. TV, iPod, etc).  To turn off the speaker, press the “Power Off” button on the remote as usual.

Kind regards, Steve.

Hello Steve

I have a Beolab 3500 it says MCL on the back next to the DIN plugh, so I gues it's a version 1.

When I press Menu 0 4 play on my Beolink 1000 nothings is happening on the display. Is this normal behavior? Nothing is connected to the Beolab 3500 (except for power of cause ;) )

When I press RADIO, TV, TAPE or SAT the display shows the mode accordingly for a few seconds before switching to the colon (:), so I guess both the Beolab 3500 and the remote is in working order.

Cheers

Tim

The serial number is 16557890, so it is a mk.1 according to:

Hi Tim,

Yes, this is a mk.1 speaker.  Please feel free to email me via my sponsor link below and I can help you to get the speaker set up via this cable.

Kind regards, Steve.

Hi Steve,

Thanks to your excellent advice and cable I managed to hook up my beolab 3500 mk1 to my ipod.

The sequence i used (with less than 1 sec. between hits)

on the beo4:

red (on) button

menu

0

4

go

If successful, display says MCL SEL.

and you can hear whatever source is playing on your ipad (or other device connected through the minijack).

Two remarks:

Volume control has to be done on the connected Ipad/Smartphone/... If you push the volume buttons on the beo4 remote, the beolab 3500 changes input automatically so stops playing

Once you power off the beolab 3500, you have to go through the whole 'menu 0 4 go' routine again for another use of the MCL input. Which is a shame, would be nice if the speaker remembered the last source. Or if there was a way to access the MCL input with 1 button?

Cheers, wishing you a great Easter holiday,

Vincent

Hi Vincent,

Glad to hear that everything is working.  Yes, you do need to enter this code each time you power on the speaker.  The only other option is to buy a Beolink Converter type 1161166 to connect between the speaker and the phone, then the speaker will have its own volume control, plus it will remember the last source used.

Wishing you a happy Easter!

Kind regards, Steve.

Hi,

No problem, here are the full instructions on how to use the Beolab 3500 (either version) directly with a music player or TV that has a headphone socket.

A B&O remote (either Beo4 or Beolink 1000) is needed to set the speaker to MCL mode (Beolab 3500 mk.1/LCS9000) or Powerlink mode (Beolab 3500 mk.2) each time it is switched on. First, please set the speaker to standby mode using the "red dot" button on the remote and unplug the Masterlink cable from the speaker (if fitted).
For Beolab 3500 mk/1 or LCS9000, please press MENU 0 4 GO on a Beo4 or MENU 0 4 PLAY on a Beolink 1000, or for Beolab 3500 mk.2 please press MENU MENU 0 4 GO on a Beo4 or MENU MENU 0 4 PLAY on a Beolink 1000 (please ensure that the "GO" or "PLAY" button is only pressed briefly).  Volume control is then managed from the connected device (eg. TV, iPod, etc).  To turn off the speaker, press the “Power Off” button on the remote as usual.
For older Beolink 1000 remote controls that don't have a MENU button, please press SHIFT then TEXT instead of MENU.
Kind regards, Steve.
