Hello New member and I’m not very ‘techy’ so please be patient... We currently have the BeoLab 17 with the Beosound Moment which we love, and about to buy the BeolB 19 to go with them. My question is that we have our speakers set up in an entertaining area where we also have also a big (non B&O) 75” TV and seems a shame that we can’t also listen to the TV through these speakers. I called my local B & O dealer to ask how to connect the speakers and they recommended a pre-amp especially as we also have Foxtel (satellite tv) connected but they said that we would possibly not be able to use the Moment with this set up? Obviously that is no good to us at all! They said they would get back to me with more info but does anyone out there have a similar setup and provide some advice? I was looking at the Transmiiter and also the Connection Hub but can’t find anything about integrating the Moment with them.... Any expert advice would be appreciated before I spend thousands of dollars on equipment that will not do what we would like. Many thanks in advance Julie

Hi Julie,

Welcome to Beoworld!  Yes, it certainly is possible to integrate the non-B&O TV with the Moment and speakers.  The key to this is finding out which audio output sockets are fitted to the TV.  Basically, if the TV has an analogue audio output (ie. headphones, red/white RCA outputs or a 3.5mm audio output), then you can link the TV to the Line In sockets of the Moment with a simple cable.

A small setting change is needed on the Moment (reduce the "Network Delay" option as close to zero as the Moment will allow to avoid lip-sync issues) and all is done.

If the TV only has an optical output, then you just need to add a Beoplay S8 Connection Hub (£149 GBP from your local B&O dealer) to convert the optical signal to audio so that the Moment can accept it.

I can help you with the cables and setup for either option.  Please let me know which sockets are fitted to your TV (or let me know the full model number of the TV) and I will be pleased to help!

Kind regards, Steve.

Steve.

Hi Steve

Thankyou for the very prompt, “layman’s terms” reply!  :)    I thought “converting” the TV audio to WISA for the speakers was going to be a messy, expensive job but this sounds easy even for me.   Could I please just clarify a couple of things?

The TV does have the red and white outputs so will get a cable to connect it to the Moment - is there a particular type/brand I should be looking for that is the best one?  (I’m in Australia).

Also - presuming that the Moment will recognise the TV when it is plugged in and turned on - is there anything we need to do or any issues with the Moment swapping from music (we usually use the app on our phones to select the music) to the TV and back?  Or does it do it automatically depending on if the TV is on or off..?

After my conversation with our local dealer yesterday who said I would need to buy a $4,000 pre-amp and then would not be able to use the Moment...this information is fabulous.   It has also confirmed my decision to buy the BeoLab 19 as was wondering yesterday if I should bother as the costs were getting out of hand...

Many, many thanks

Julie

I think Julie is in Australia ...

If you tell us the brand and model of your TV that would help.

Also in another non-B&O TV thread we have been discussing the Almando Stereo multi connector which at 399 euros is more than the S8

The thousands for a pre-amp sounds nuts !

Which city are you in ?

And Steve will configure an excellent quality cable fit for purpose and possibly even made to measure

Or if you want a quick & dirty test you should be able to get one locally.

Enjoy the BL19.

Hi

the TV is a Hisense but as it is on the wall -I can’t see which model it is!  We only bought it at the start of this year, and I know it’s a 75” Smart TV with 4K etc..

I was told AU$3,900 for a pre-amp that will enable us to plug both the TV and Foxtel in but he wasn’t sure we would still be able to used the Moment....so I did say that we wouldn’t consider it if not (he is getting back to me when he has more info)

We are in Perth, Western Australia :).

Oh, and I did read through some other questions about non B &O TV’s before I posted my question but they didn’t include the Moment and as the dealership advised that I may not be able to use both - I thought I would post my own setup

cheers Julie

Great to hear you did some pre-reading.

Perth's a bit far for a house call from me !

I did not know HiSense had an OLED model: it's now past JB HiFi's closing time for me to stroll down and do an inspection - although I guess I could so some surfing :)

I still hope we can solve this without that kind of expense ... save that for some flights to Bali !!

I ma not sure why I thought you had written OLED ... and yes, HiSense don't do OLED instead they argue that have as equally good ULED (where as Samsung argue their QLED is better too):

Anyhow, the HiSense TVs do appear to lack audio out put :( which may be why you are getting the recommendation for a separate surround sound decoding amplifier.

Could you take a look at this "rogues' gallery" of TVs and pick which one you have ? Then we can look at the associated PDF's detailed specifications - thanks.

I forgot to highlight the links ... and I left out the link to the gallery *doh*

I did lots of googling before asking for help!  But probably ended up more confused as there seemed to be lots of information about different ways to connect things - transmitters, receivers, connection hubs etc, etc

Then I called the local dealers hoping for a solution but that was even more disappointing and was going to give up but I know my husband really wants to connect the TV (and the 19 will be my Christmas present to him) so was hoping to find an answer so I could do both for him

Hi Julie,

Thanks for this, according to the online documentation from HiSense, thhis TV should have a headphone socket fitted, so you can make a simple cable connection from the TV headphone socket to the Line In sockets of the Moment to allow the TV to share the speakers:-

Hope this helps!

Hi Julie,

I had similar set-up and it works quite well. You would need a transmitter-1, and an IR receiver (IR RCV3000 ) to control volume. You should be able to get both from your local dealer.

In my case I had a Samsung smart TV connected to Transmitter-1 via Toslink cable. Pair of BL18, and BL19 all wirelessly paired with Transmitter-1. An IR-receiver connected to Transmitter-1 via its USB port. The TV remote can in this set-up control the volume, otherwise it will not be possible. Later on I purchased BS Moment (which, I since regret). After lots of experimenting and back/forth with the dealer we figured out best set-up. You would need to connect the BS Moment to Transmitter-1 via 2 Powerlink cables. Effectively, the hub is now the Transmitter and the sources are the TV and the BS Moment.

Few things to note:

  • After replacing my non-BO TV with a BO TV, I can see that Transmitter-1 takes probably 8-10 seconds longer to wake the BL18/19 up.
  • Toslink has priority as a source over the RJ45 (Powerlink) for Transmitter-1. So when you turn the TV on, you will hear the TV from the speakers. If you turn BS Moment while TV is on, you will continue hearing the TV. You will need to turn TV off to start hearing the BS Moment
  • If TV is off and you turn the BS Moment on, you will hear the BS Moment from the speakers (after some wait while Transmitter doing what it has to do to wake the speakers up), the TV will remain off.

In my case, BL19 was a great addition and cannot recommend it enough. I live in a house and enjoy Jazz and Classical music, the depth you get from it is tremendous addition to both TV and Music experience. Hope this helps.

@Samer

One problem could be that adding the IR RCV3000 won’t let you control the volume of the tv - the Hisense tv probably will not be supported.

I’d definitely check for that, before buying the Transmitter 1.

So your Moment doesn’t work as the “in-between” for the TV and speakers? Apologies if this is not a technical term...     Need a transmitter?

So many different options/solutions.......

Hi Julie,

Please don't worry, there is no need for any extra hardware.  Simply run the correct cable from the TV headphone output to the Moment and the Moment will do all the volume control for you.

By the way, thanks for your email, I will be in touch in a little while.

Kind regards, Steve.

@Julie

If you follow the advice from Steve (using the headphones output) please report back here how your experience is - as for sound quality and handling of the volume control.

You probably also will loose the sound from the tv speaker - will that bother you?

I will definitely report back with what we do.

Not bothered particularly about losing the TV sound but will be interested to see how we control the volume  (might need a B&O remote?)  and how the Moment manages the switch between music and TV.

We currently use the phone app to control the music/volume rather than the Moment itself be interested to see how we can do that with the TV.

Hi Julie,

You can test the quality of the TV headphone output by plugging in a good set of headphones and tuning into a music radio station or selecting a music show via an online video streaming service (eg. YouTube).

Using the headphone output allows you to have a choice of either the TV remote or the Moment phone app to control the TV volume through the B&O speakers.  However, most people find that the simplest option is to turn up the TV headphone volume to a fairly high level (50-75%) so that the TV sound matches the level of the music playing on the Moment.  You can then easily swap between TV and music without any big changes in volume level.

PS. I've edited my previous post as I linked to the wrong cable initially (sorry, I was low on caffeine this morning!)  I have also emailed you with the correct link.

Kind regards, Steve.

Hi Steve

I have ordered the cable you recommended.

Looking forward to receiving it and testing out the TV through the speakers (will be even better when I get the 19 for my husband for Christmas 😀)

many thanks to everyone for their advice - I will report back when we have it set up
