Does the beogram 3400 have an in-built pre-amp ?

No.
Unless it's the 4-channel version AND the (super-rare) quad module has been fitted.

Thanks for the info - much appreciated. I wanted to hook it up to a Beomaster 4500,but it hasn't got a pre-amp either

You can fit an external preamp between the two.
