Hi all,

just a quick question, would the following combination be compatible and work well together ?

Beolab 1700 & Beovox s 22 speakers

if not any suggestions on what speakers would work

cheers

That would work fine.
- Though better speakers would provide a better result.
Beovox S30 Type 6301 (not 6317! ) would be a much more balanced speaker than Beovox S22 and in the same cabinet size.
For slightly larger - but much better - speakers think Beovox S45 or S45-2 (type 6302 or 6312).

Hi Martin,

on another note when I connected some speakers to the beolab 1700 to test the amp there was a really loud buzzing and humming noise coming out the speakers. I tested this on both speaker channels and got the same result, any idea what this could be ? I also noticed the power on bulb is not coming on. Any information would be really useful

cheers

Either the chosen source (input) is open and the volume turned way up or the amplfiier will
need a service to either the power supply filtering or an idle current running astray (overloading the power supply).
The need for a thorough service would be normal after all these years if not already done.
As would fresh lamps.

Servicekit and lamps are available.

hi again martin,

I have a chance to buy some Type M Hojttaler Beovox Speakers for a good price, would these hook up ok to my beolab 1700?

They would - and it would work as long as you don't push it. But they wouldn't be ideal.
Type M (being 3.2 Ohms)  were made for use with valve (tube-) amplifiers - where they are actually quite good!.
Their power rating is insufficient for the Beolab 1700 and the Beolab 1700 wouldn't be able to sound its best (by far).
Beovox 1100, Beovox S30 (6301), Beovox S45 (6302), Beovox S45.2 (6312), Beovox P30 or P45 would be much better choices.
As would practically any of the larger passive B&O speakers (S60 upwards).

Hi Martin,

i tested my m type speakers with an old metro sound amp and a CD player and they sounded lovely with no problems. I hooked up the speakers to the same amp and an old  gold ring g101 turntable and when I connected the speakers there was a popping noise and now the speakers sound all distorted, I connected the speakers up with the plugs turned off and they still went pop. No doubt I have blown something in the speakers but strange as power was off, any ideas what I have done ? I'm gutted because the speakers are lovely. Any thoughts?

regards

barry
