Guys,

I have posted this question previously, however I keep finding (now 6 months) a guy wanting to sell a pristine Beomaster 900 for $300 locally.(Euro 196)

I have asked him politely if he might accept less, but he is resolute. Nasty, if you want to know the truth.

Any thoughts?

Jeff

P.S. This is a really nice Beomaster 900, but unless someone thinks it is worth the asking price, well, we can't save them all. I have a Beomaster 4400 and two Beocord 5000's waiting in the queue for repair as it is.

Value of vintage stuff is a matter of opinion.
To some people a Beomaster 900 is just useless junk, no remote, no MP3 support, no USB, no touchscreen, no nothing and far too bulky to run around with.
To others, a Beomaster 900 is a beautiful and definite classic design piece of the early 1960s from the hands of
architect Henning Moldenhawer with an added note of being the worlds first fully transistorized stereo receiver.

I have seen nice Beomaster 900s go for considerably less to some lucky buyers and for more than twice the amount you mention to some serious collectors.

Condition is everything.
Is it really pristine?
Has it been thoroughly serviced?
Does it have the optional MPX (stereo decoder) module and is it working?
...

If you think it's worth the price - go ahead.

"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder"?

If the Beomaster is in really good shape and fully functional, then the asking price is reasonable.

It may have been refurbished to a very high standard by one of the enthusiasts on this site?

I think you need the seller to qualify his asking price,or if he won't then simply walk away?

These lovely old Beomaster's crop up,but naturally, usually need lots of work!.

Don't let your heart overrule your head?

I would give it a pass. It doesn’t Sound like it’s one you’ve been searching for for ages and if you feel the seller is a bit rude then it’s not worth the high asking price.

I would say however that a great example can be worth that price, and including service I have payed more for one of mine.  They really are very good workhorses.

Hi Martin, Nick, and Kris,

Thank you for ll your input. It IS appreciated.

I am not entirely certain what I expected (wanted) when I posted this question. The allure of a pristine B&O product is just  irresistible to me, but I attempted to negotiate with the seller over 6 months ago, unsuccessfully.

I find that a successful sight-unseen purchase is greatly enhanced when you have good rapport with the seller. Purchases made with your guard up are much less likely to be satisfactory upon arrival. (At least this is my opinion.)

Martin, in answer to your question, yes the 900 is absolutely pristine, however it has NOT been serviced.

I said 6 months ago, but in reflection it may have been a year ago, I tried to discuss the price with the seller who became extremely agitated that I had the temerity to question his selling price. He then went on to lecture me, at length, telling me that he "made" over $10,000 a month on the local version of Kijiji, so HE knew what he was doing.

Well I say if something hasn't sold in a year, there is something wrong with the item or the price. It doesn't help that in his ad it begins with: "PRICE FIRM."

I love the classic look of the Beomaster 900 and if I could take a look at this 900, that "might" make the difference. However it is on the mainland and I am on Vancouver Island, a $190 round-trip ferry ride.

Unless there is something "different" about the 900 as compared to other vintage B&O electronics, then this 900 (if it actually does work) will need rebuilding sooner rather than later, and such a repair could easily match the asking selling price.

I walked away from this sale previously due entirely to the rude and condescending attitude of the seller. Assuming, and I do, that this 900 will require rebuilding, I have to pay the shipping between Vancouver and Victoria, then shipping to a repair shop will to do the work, and the repair costs.

Putting this all together I think I better warm up my running shoes, as I think I may need them again.

Thanks for all the helpful information.

If anyone feels I am making an incorrect decision, please feel free to say so. But selling price $300, shipping to Victoria $55, round-trip shipping internationally $150, repair costs $300..... that's $805 or EUR 528.
