Hi all,
I've recently purchased a beosound 9000 which I will be mounting in the living room. I don't yet have b&o speakers for the lounge, instead an A/V receiver, passive speakers and a samsung tv connected to the receiver. The tv's internal speakers are disabled and always uses the receiver for sound output.
I also have a BV 6 in another room which I would connect to the 9000 via masterlink and may possibly get a beosound 3500 for the bedroom, again masterlink.
I'd like to get some beolab 8000 speakers for the living room to replace the amp and passive speakers and originally thought I could simply connect the TV to the 9000 through aux-in but now realise that if for example I was listening to the radio on one of the remote masterlink speakers and the kids turned the tv on downstairs the masterlink speakers would switch to the TV/aux source.
My question is would a NL/ML converter with IR eye located in the living room resolve this by using the converter's AUX in for the connection to the samsung tv, it's powerlink to the beolab 8000s and masterlink to the 9000, BV6 and 3500?
Could the Nl/ML converter be used in this way allowing for the remote masterlink speakers to play a cd or radio from the 9000 while the beolab 8000s on the converter play the Aux in source?
Many thanks in advance,
Rob.
Hi and welcome to Beoworld.
A NL/ML Converter won’t be of any help in your setup.
That converter is basicly a bridge between NL and ML product - you have no NL products in the setup.
ML systems are based on a Master and one (or more) slaves.
Therefore you can only use the Master/yourBS9000 once at the time.
Your conclusion is right ——- with one pair of rainboots only one person at the time can take a walk on a rainy day ;-)
There are however, a few exceptions from this = the BS4 and the BC2 - but that won’t help you!
There is a tv - and there is a BV
Hi Rob,
Welcome to Beoworld! Basically, you have two options if you want to link the non-B&O TV and the Beosound:-
1) Connect the TV and all of the Beolab speakers to the Beosound music system for stereo sound through all speakers, with volume control from the B&O remote, or
3) Use the existing AV receiver (ideally this would be one with pre-out sockets but that isn't essential) to allow all of the speakers to be connected for full surround sound with control from the receiver remote control. In this case, the Beosound can link to the receiver to share the speakers.
For either of these setups, a Masterlink cable will give you music from the Beosound to the B&O products in the other rooms: https://soundsheavenly.com/link-masterlink-control-and-sync/
I can help with cables for any of the above options. If you can please confirm your preferred option, I will be pleased to advise on the cabling required.
Kind regards, Steve.

Thanks for the reply MM.
I presume if I had a NL b&o TV and the NL converter, the TV would be able to play CDs from the BS 9000? Would the remote ML speakers be able to play the TV source? I also want to add in a Chromecast Audio, in that set-up would it go into the AUX of the BS9000 or the AUX of the NL/ML converter?
Many thanks,
Thanks for the advice Steve, I was in touch with via email last month re ML cable :) I think what I will do for now is link the BS9000 to the receiver via digital coax and masterlink it to the other ML products. Are you saying the beolab 8000 speakers could be connected to the denon A/V receiver? Just checked and it does indeed have pre-outs. It also has a switched A/C outlet rated max 1000W.
Yes, you can link the Beolab 8000 speakers to the pre-out sockets of the receiver with these cables, this way you will get surround sound (with four or more speakers) rather than just stereo sound if they are connected to the Beosound:-
https://soundsheavenly.com/line-in-connection/av-processor-pre-amp-sonos-to-beolab-rca-line-in
The Beosound can link to the digital audio input of the receiver with a co-axial cable to play CDs through the speakers:-
https://soundsheavenly.com/televisions/coax-s-pdif-digital-cable-for-beovision-ofc-with-gold-contacts
The other B&O products around the house can link to the 9000 via Masterlink cables:-

You then just need a Speaker Sense Adapter for the Beosound (this plugs into either Powerlink socket on the Beosound 9000 to allow it to accept commands from the B&O remote control without having B&O speakers connected):-

Yes, exactly that is the purpose of that converter...to exchange sources to and from both systems.
If you want to keep the receiver in the mix, you certainly can do as adviced from Steve.
If you however, want to get rid of it, you could have a look at this:
https://almando.com/index.php/almando-category/almando-multiplay-stereo.html
This way you could be able to connect the speakers to both the 9000 and the tv.
(Maybe the smaller and cheaper version will do the job).
When using the speakers for the tv, you could still be able to draw on the 9000 from a ML-linkroom.
This means, that you won’t have to use and occupy the Aux-in.
The wanted Chromecast Audio could be connected there.
MM
Thanks for your help.
If I upgraded my TV to a BV7 or BV10 would I connect the Beolab speakers directly to the TV and connect the BS9000 (also in living room) and other link rooms to the TV's ML socket? I would want to be able to play the radio or CD from the BS9000 in a ML link room while the BV in the living room was on TV, would that be possible? Would the living room BV be able to play sources on the BS9000 too over ML?
Hi MM, I'm toying with the idea of getting a beovision 11 with NL/ML converter as opposed to a BV7 or BV10.. do you know if a BV11 can play audio sources from an master linked BS9000 without having to turn the screen on? I couldn't see any reference to this in the manual. Many thanks for your help, Rob.
Millemissen: A NL/ML Converter won’t be of any help in your setup. That converter is basicly a bridge between NL and ML product - you have no NL products in the setup.
Thanks Mogelmose that's interesting and good to hear. Do you get any sound delay playing the samsung TV sound in other NL rooms? Having the NL converter gives me scope for adding extra NL products moving forward, but would it work without any NL products connected since I only have ML at the moment? The issue I have is finding a converter for sale.
The S8 hub looks interesting too and I see it also has a PL in and out. Could this be used as a source switch between the optical in and PL from my BS9000?
so BS9000 -> S8 (PL in), Samsung TV -> S8 (optical in), PL out -> BL8000.
Or perhaps it only works with S8 speakers on the output?
Many thanks.
Hi ebnrob,
Yes, you can use the S8 connection Hub with any Beolab speakers, although please bear in mind that this is about to be discontinued, so stocks of the Hub may be limited.
I am currently looking into an alternative product to replace the Hub when it goes out of production, so please feel free to contact me via my sponsor link below if you would like me to keep you updated on this.
Hi Steve, thanks for your help, I read on here last night that the S8 PL out doesn't send the trigger signal to the speakers when PL in is used? Is that still the case? https://archivedforum2.beoworld.org/forums/t/28988.aspx
The S8 looks like it may be able to tide me over until I upgrade the TV to a beovision.. i did have another question regarding the beovision11 if you are able to help? I wondered whether the BV11 is able to play a music source (in my case it would be a BS9000 connected via a NL/ML converter) without having to turn the screen on using the remote?
Many thanks, Rob.
You are correct that using the Powerlink input of the Hub stops the Hub from sending trigger signals to the Powerlink output. However, the Hub can still be used in a few different ways:-
1) Connect the Beosound 9000 to the Powerlink input of the Hub and set the speakers into "Line" mode so that they auto trigger when the music plays,
2) Connect the Beosound 9000 to the 3.5mm input of the Hub and connect the speakers via Powerlink cables as normal,
3) Connect the speakers to the Beosound 9000 and link the Hub to the Aux input of the 9000 instead.
You also have the option of linking a music source to the Beovision 11, via a couple of different methods:-
1) Use a direct cable connection into the 9 pin AV port (without the NL/ML Converter) - this way the screen will come on but you can blank it using the Picture Mute (P.MUTE) command,
2) Add an NL/ML Converter to link an audio source to the TV without activating the screen.
Please feel free to get in touch via my sponsor link below if you would like help with cabling for any of these options.
