Hi Alex

The service tool is only available to dealers and certified  installers and engineers. It is downloaded from the Bang & Olufsen dealer site which requires a log on. You also need ongoing access to receive updates.

We get into the area of a dealer principle investing a fortune in his business, employing staff, paying for training etc and then when somebody wants a job doing, they try and cut him out to get the job done cheaply.

Sorry, I'll get of my soap box now, but the decreasing number of dealers and increased demands on the remaining ones make it hard to take when everybody wants a discount.

The price of £180 maybe the going rate in the south. In the North West we charge a call out of £125 plus VAT. We have two full time installers on the books plus two vehicles, we have to cover costs to sustain the business.

Regards

Opman

Try Lintronic or Flirc as a workaround...

Spending 180 GBP on an old platform - I wouldn't do it.

Well put Opman. It is good to hear a dealer’s viewpoint clearly explained.

I question if dealers truly WANT the profit from making a house call for just a PUC update? I mean, a dealer certainly needs to be compensated for his time. However, installers make their big profit from doing large installations. I always figured that the house call for a PUC update is mostly just an opportunity for a dealer to strengthen his relationship with the client. I've had dealers even offer to mail their laptop to me as a loan to update a PUC. If I bring my item that needs an update (not so practical, though, for a BeoVision) to a dealer to coincide with a purchase, they are usually happy to make the update without charge since I'm in the store and giving them business with a new purchase.

The closed system of needing dealers for programming is a thing of the past. With the growth of home automation and the Internet Of Things, paying several hundred dollars for a house call from a dealer for a software update is becoming quite an odd concept. I imagine that the new generation of buyers would certainly never accept that. All of the new B&O products are connected to the internet already to stay up to date.

Agreed, problem i have is i know my local dealer would never ask for any money for this but i’ll always give him a drink for his time.

But having to take a big heavy TV off the wall, putting it in the boot of my car and risk accidental damage doesnt seem worth it for what i know is a 5 minute Job.

Perhaps this topic needs its own thread as we are getting away from the op.

It is easy to assume that dealers are making a killing on service calls. LIke all dealers we have a loyal band of clients that we have dealt with for many years. When somebody rings the showroom and reports that their TV is faulty but the reality that the PUC emitter has been moved by the "lodger who never pays rent" or the cleaner has unplugged something to use the vacuum cleaner, the list is endless, in the main we do not charge for these kinds of call outs as this build the relationship.

An upgrade to an old product that is a special visit would be deemed chargeable. Having said that, we would probably encourage the client to consider replacing the TV with a new model.

See, I can't stop myself. I'll probably now get berated for suggesting that old products are not worth keeping.

It is also worth remembering that a lot of people who contribute to this forum have a reasonable level of tech knowledge. We have to deal with questions like "My Beoplay A9 has stopped working". On further probing we discover that the A9 which was set up in their home on their network has moved to a friends house and not connected to that network.

Maybe the new thread could be all about unusual service calls

I'll go back into my box now.

I think we're likely to be finding common ground here. Certainly, a dealer, installer, or technician shouldn't be expected to be giving away his time. The OP was just asking if the service tool was available for him to do it himself. I'm sure we're all happy to see the new wave of products offering updates that do not inconvenience dealers or customers.

We are killing ourselves with the internet of things. A good installer is worth the money. When I moved I installed 7 rooms, got the cable from the dealer and pulled it myself to save some money. He draw out a picture with all the requirements, powerlink ML RJ etc. I paid for the total of 3 guys 3 days. This was in 2011. But now I want to upgrade and it is easy, pull new cabling all the pipes are already in the wall and floor.

If I ask for a puc the dealer will not charge me, but I first ask him if he can sell me the item, in order to let him make a profit. Live and let live. No we buy stuff on the internet and expect that somebody else installs it for a few bucks.

The whole beoplay stuff buying from anywhere irritates the hell out of me. Why should our last dealers not sell the stuff, people come look and buy it on the internet for less. He has a store, you get coffee or a beer and yes, I will pay for it.

However good dealers are scarce...
