Hi,

First of all, as this is my first post, I must say this website really pulled me into the BEO-world.
I'm doing a friend a favour by looking into her Beomaster 5000 and Beocord 5500 system, which she inhereted from her granddad. She never got it properly working though.

Totally new to this kind of hifi, I'm facing some difficulties for which I could not find the answer in the forum though I searched it for some days now.

The tape deck actually brought the beomaster to life, with splendid sound. ffwd however would shut both deck and amp down (cassette first spins at low speed, then both units shut down).

But after insisting some more, the radio came to life, as I got the beomaster controls open (with some gentle force, I don't think the coil still does the trick). I could find most of the important radio stations even without an antenna, the reception is very good, stereo is lit, and loudness can be switched on/and off. The neutral button, though it doens't show a status light, improves the sound as well (I use small ELAC M SAT speakers on it). I got the remote, but with 4 empty batteries.

Thing is, often the only way to bring the beomaser to life is by pushing play on the beocord. At that event, the tape will play, but without sound. I suppose the amp is at 0 volume, but not one button on it will respond.

I then switch it off again, sometimes also unplug it from the mains, and then I can get the beomaster to play radio. I changed the 3V battery inside (wasn't the original anymore) and now, after shutdown (when not taken of the mains) I get the same station at startup (if it does start up). Part from this behaviour, it won't let me store new presets. Well, it let's me, but when I choose one, it goes to LW everytime.

Will all of this be settled with new caps ?  As this is what I read most of the time as being an issue seen the age of it ?

Would love to get this in a decent shape and then maybe add a Beogramm CD 50...

Thank you in advance for any insights.

Jos, Belgium,

complete BeoNewbie

It's a 1984-1986 Beomaster 5000.
