Hello, the headline says it all, in fact: there is so much talk about the S 45-2 everywhere and they are always highly praised. But there are two S 45 variants as well, one came before the S 45-2 (the old S 45 has a „molded“ resin back and the S 45-2 a flat back I think made from wood?) And a later S 45 also exists with the dual speaker covers in front. That later model is only two way so I assume really worse than the older ones.

Still, almost exclusively S 45-2’s are mentioned. Is that just coincidence or are they really so much better than the first generation three way S 45’s? Thomas

There are three types of Beovox S45:

Beovox S45 (Type 6302) of the 70s  (one-piece front baffle)
Beovox S45-2 (Type 6312) of the 70s  (one-piece front baffle)
Beovox S45 (Type 6427) of the 80s  (two-piece front baffle)

(To add to the confusion some people refer to the 80s model as the -2 or think that's what they are...
Don't, - it's confusing enough already ).

The earlier (6302/6312) were placed apprx halfway up the speaker model range at the time, - with several smaller (S25/S35...) and
several larger (S60/S75...) models available too, and they are generally well respected, balanced and pleasantly sounding speakers for their size.
The only difference is, as you mention, the cabinet backs - and support for floorstands for S45-2.
It's true that the tweeter was also changed, but that happened during type 6302 production, so is not unique for the S45-2.
I cannot tell any difference soundwise between any of them. And I've heard a lot of them.

Type 6427 was the smallest speaker in its range.
Even if it is a well sounding speaker in its own respect - and indeed for a two-way system - comparing it to the older S45 and S45-2 would not be fair.
Compare Beovox S80 instead - another well balanced and quite overlooked speaker in my opinion.

Thanks Dillen. So in effect there's no difference in sound quality at all, if I go for a old S 45 (6302) instead the S 45-2? Kind of funny that almost everyone only talks about S 45-2. Or is it because ppl always lust for those floor stands? Thomas

I can't say.
Some people seems to assume that newer is better, - without really knowing or checking.
Type 6312 was prepared for floorstands, but Type 6302 wallmounts easiest and nicest.
