Hey guys.

First of all, once more a nice podcast last week ;-)

I think it was about 42 minutes in, or something like that, you talked about fascinating kids on their products. This is just what happened to me.

Around the year of 2000 or so. We have visited our local store and they have had the Beolab 1. What a speaker. Immediately I fell in love with them. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to convince my parents to upgrade from their lab 4000’s to them. 17 years later I finally was able to buy them second hand, and boy am I happy and proud to have them. Sure, I know there are many better speakers out there, but every time I look at them, listen to them it makes me happy and proud to have them. At that time I was searching for a pair of them for about six years or so. Always tried to save some money and had to spend it elsewhere. Unfortunately I don’t have the possibility to spend a lot on b&o. Still looking for a job as an engineer Indifferent

Same thing with my beocenter 2. Took me like ten years to get my hands on it.

The beo-virus has started, just because a boy was able to listen to some incredible speakers in his childhood.

But there is more to this post than just an anecdote of a man who never really grew up.

You guys seem to have knowledge in lab 1’s, 5’s, 9’s... and i have a couple of questions, if that’s ok for you.

Concerning the lab 1’s.

Why are they lacking in bass? They have a nice sound, well balanced and I don’t want my system to deliver bass only, like beats for instance does, but a bit more of the lower end would be nice. Even the specs on them aren’t too bad either. A six and a have inch bass driver ain’t the worst. There are subwoofers with drivers of that size and produce a lot more bass. Question: Is it designed to go along with a subwoofer or has it been a technical issue at that point?

Which subwoofer would you recon with it. Is it the lab two, as it was designed for them. Does it “have” to be the 19? What about the lab 11? Any other sub from a third party company?

Which rear speaker would be good in a 5.1 surround setup? Optically I would go with the 6002. I am probably one of the few people who really doesn’t like the style of the 8000 / 18. How about lab 3’s would the acoustic lense would be to dominant? Does it make sense to get a second pair of lab 1 for the surroundings?

Is there anything I can do to service them? I want to keep them for a long time around me. So are there any tips and tricks that I can do, to do them well?

One thing that has always been interesting me. the successor of the lab 1. Was it the lab 9’s or the lab 5’s? Yes, the lab 5 was the top of the line speaker for quite a long time, but it played in a really different league. The 9’s were, concerning prices and specs closer related to the 1’s however non of them look anything like them.

Whenever I find a job, i would like to upgrade my setup. First of all with a subwoofer and, as mentioned before, possibly with another set of lab 1’s for rears. The other possibility would be a pair of 9’s or even 5’s. Obviously the fives have a lot more power and the acoustic outstands those of the 9’s. How would the lab 9’s would be set in the gap between a pair of lab 1’s plus lab2 and a pair of lab 5’s? And even further how big is the gap to the 50’s? In a theoretical scenario, would my lab 1 be a good partner with a pair of lab 5? Which other rears fit the 5’s?

Often you are talking about how a future lab should look like, where it would be settled, sizes etc. I think what type of speakers b&o is missing is something like the old 600’s a slim and elegant speaker, which is not to overpriced. The 50’s and 90’s are sound wise outstanding, so you say. But they also are massively big. The 18’s are very special with their wooden lamellars, which I personally absolutely dislike. So my wish for a speaker, besides the rumoured center speaker, would be a slim elegant speaker in the shape of a 6000 with a very creative name. Name it Beolab 60 Stick out tongue

I know, many questions, but you always say. Shoot them along as long as it doesn’t get you into prison right away Cool

Actually - unfortunately - you could go wrong with the BL1’s.

When they work, they are fine - but if they fail, they will be hard to repair......due to missing and obsolete parts.

Let me give you my 2 sence Wink about some of the questions

It is correct if the BL1 goes wrong it could be the end of the speaker because of missing parts as Millemis writes.

The surround speaker in a 5.1 or 7.1 system :

For the best sound experience it's the best if you have the same speaker all around you, so for example, if you have BL6002 as your front L/R it would be the best to have 6002 as surround speakers aswell SL/SR. It is the same if you have BL5, BL50 or even BL90. But for most people this is not an option, and it would be a pricy setup Big Smile Most of the setups today also have a different Center speaker because of the BeoVision TV's, but if we break it down it would be the best solution to have the same speaker in L/C/R/SL/SR

The key is to have the same sound all around you, for example if a big V8 car drives from the front left, to center, to the front right and back to surround right, then the car should sound the same in every speaker.

Subwoofer:

Please dont call BeoLab 11 a subwoofer, it is just a bass add-on for example BL6000/8000 and nothing more. BeoLab 2 is a subwoofer and it is really powerfull. The "new" BeoLab 19 is not as powerfull in my opinion but it is really tighty and sounds amazing, it lacks the really deep rumble but it is quite good. I would prefer the BL19 over BL2 because it is more controlable and sounds amazing.

Yes you could get a great non B&O subwoofer for you setup, I had two XTZ 12" subs in my system back when I had a 9.2 B&O surround system. If you dont mind the looks the check out SVS, EarthQuake, XTZ those brands give you bang for the buck, specially the last naming brand.

Iam sorry to say but there is NO BeoTalk this Sunday. I've personally run in to many issues with the new appartement and have gotten delayed a good bit so I really need this Sunday to work there. Also Willie is out too because he has some important things to do before the hopeful settlement of the lawsuit after his massive car crash(not his fault).
