The (for me at least) most interesting ‘thing’ yesterday, was the survey about using Speaker Groups’.

Although asking this in a chat is a difficult thing.....

....since you never know if people have a multichannel setup, a Stage or a 2 channel aka stereo setup or.......when the only answer is 1 or 2 ( for using or not using Speaker Groups).

BUT the question is actually important, because it would be nice to know whether people (who actually could) actually use (read: need) this function?

Or is that simply ‘overkill’ - are the possibilities of the BSys4/SoundCenter too many and too complicated for the lot - and only usefull for the few (nerds like me and you...)?

I have a feeling that a lot of the BV11/Avant/Eclipse/Harmony owners - even with multiple speakers connected - just use it as once set up from the installer.

Would be interesting to know how many owners actually ‘fiddle ariund’ with creating Speaker Groups....and also have a use for it at home.

It was also the most interesting thing for me too as I use many speaker groups and very often try out different combinations.

To widen it out somewhat I was also interested in the set up of various TVs since I thought I was alone in finding the Horizon's brightness was starting to hurt my eyes and the different  levels of OLED light being set by people was extremely helpful and illuminating :-)

Different set ups of systems, speaker positions, TV centre channels off or on etc., are really useful to me

If you guys have these sorts of questions or would like to know this in general I'd be very happy to ask it!

so if there is anything specific, let me know and I'll gladly ask it Big Smile

I'll try and use it as a topic for next week, but I personally thing very few people use speaker groups. It's not too technical per-see but in most cases there is very little need for it. Like my girlfriend know how to use them and all, but hardly ever does. I suspect it goes like that in most places as if the setup is done right it'll fit most use-cases right of the bat, and it's easy Stick out tongue

`I’m also a big user of different speaker groups, and like (i thought) many, have different sources saved to use different groups and different sound modes for each, by default.

Isn’t that part of the point / ease of use simplicity that makes a B&O setup so worthwhile?

If the broader question is how many use surround sound setups (in a 5.1 sense, not just a 2.0 one), then it does seem that they are less popular than was perhaps the case 10-20 years ago. Sound bars, from the good to the bad, seem to have filled the gap for a good chunk of the home market.

Not that I’d ever use one for my main viewing.

If there should not be a place in a 2+ hour podcast (by the name of BeoTalk) - that now has reached over 100 episodes - for a core B&O question like this, I don’t know where to discuss such technical aspekt of our B&O setups.

Maybe there is no interest in discussing this from the participaters in the chat - I don’t know, but would like to know.

Maybe it is just a sign of less and less interest for trying to achieve an optimum with the B&O tv products (I mean soundwise)....like Sandyb also mentiones.....if I understand his comment correctly.

Sure you can get good sound from the ‘out of the box’ settings, that an installer makes......

.....I however, think that that can only be a first time setup.

(Also it would be interesting to know, how many B&O multichannel setup owners have done the setup themselves?).

We should not wonder, if B&O in the future will incorporate less and less of the fantastic (at least for some of us) features, that a BSys4/Sound Center solution offers.

Maybe Sandyb is right, when he mentions that soundbars seems to fill the gap between the mediocre sound from a stock tv (LG....) and the more grown up sound from an integrated 5.1 (or more) setup with lots of parameters for tweeking.

In that case those, who still longs for a BSys5 will have to accept, that we probably at most will get a new/second soundbar with the option of connecting a couple of surround speakers (wirelessly)..
Why should B&O use time and money on solutions, that hardly anyone wants/needs?

My question was (and is), will people want a genuine multi channel system with settings for loads of connected speakers, Speaker Groups, Sound Modes, TrueImagage up-/downmixing et cetera in the future?

Will B&O still offer this kind of soffisticated sound solution.....or will we just see something more mainstreaming'ish in the future?

Afternoon sir, I think something may have got lost in translation actually, so I' pretty sure MM is not having a go.

I think his point is that use of surround setups should indeed be a good topic for podcast discussion and / or on this forum, so it was actually a good question, and one for which it would be great to have more responses from forum members etc.

So yes, it was a well appreciated question you posed.

I dont have any data, beyond (a) suggestions from dealers that 5.1 setups are less popular than once was, and (b) the explosive growth of soudnbars which suggests their feedback is correct. Both of these do suggest that a flat panel plus a sound bar is plenty good enough for even some (?) B&O customers.

**B&O should not vacate the active surround speaker market to Sonos (and soon Apple) - the new Sonos Arc sound bar, which is expendable, is supposed to be very good at getting close (vaulted ceilings aside). But there remains an opportunity for B&O in this space.

I do see similar feedback on avforums (the UK site) - while there are plenty of surround / atmos devotees, I see plenty of comments from those who count themselves as such, but who have gone down the sound bar / fewer boxes route for various reasons.

As for whether B&O ditch surround processing in light of the above - I doubt it, at least soon. I'm pretty sure they'll maintain surround processing for a while.  That of course is the million dollar question, but I guess we'll just to wait.

@Miki

That, indeed was not meant so.

I just meant, that a podcast like the BeoTalk could be a worthy forum for discussing things like this.

Of course it is not my business to decide, what you want to beotalk about - but I had understood that you are open for suggestions.

And since there is plenty of time in a 2 hour/weekly show, that should be possible.

Take it or leave it.....but please do not feel insulted.

I must admit that I asked that question in a rather provocative way ;-)

But since what we have seen lately B&O seems to focus more on simplicity per se than on making a complicated, complex setup simpel (that is how I see the BSys4/SoundCenter), I felt that it is allowed to ask that question,

After all the majority of the BV owners (in the pre-Stage/LG age) had not got any added speakers.

Maybe we must see the soundbar solution as a solution for those, who used to have a BV’s this way earlier on (and for the newcomers).

Like you I certainly do not hope that they will give up on ‘surround processing’ (in the traditional B&O sense) in favour of the more easy-to-install soundbar solutions.

HI Michael,

Hope you are well! Haven't had the time to watch you guys for awhile, Im catching episodes on an ad-hoc basis. Congrats though, you seem to still be going strong. A couple of questions for the show tonight:

1. Did you ever get you Beolab 50´s fixed? Ive been scanning the used market and there are some excellent deals but I recalled all the issues you had and just wanted to get the latest.

2. It would be great if you could do a summary of all the latest rumours fro upcoming products, Im not up to speed.

Thanks a lot! I won't be able to catch the live show but will watch it over the next fews days.

All the best!

Sorry guys, but to be fair, looking at the photos, I don't think Postnord can be held solely responsible for the damage. If they try to put this down to inadequate packaging, I woudn't blame them. Yes, shipping companies do handle packages quite careless at times, but one also has to expect, that the package can turn in any direction during shipment. It is very unlikely to be transported with the correct side up for several thousand kilometres.

I'm so sorry to see this, and how I would wish you would have asked for packaging advise on the forum. How to properly pack a Beogram for shipment is a matter that has been brought up on Beoworld several times through the years and I seem to remember that one of the threads included detailed step-by-step photos. It is absolutely crucial that the platter is removed during shipment, as it just lays loosely on top of the subplatter, which is also only held down by gravity! Imagine what happens then when the package is turned upside down. Crying

The transport screws only keep the suspension and thus also the arms from bouncing up and down. But when the Beograms suspension is held static by the transport screws, even a car ride can make the light aluminum platter jump off and shift around under the lid. The original packaging includes a piece of styrofoam with a cutout for the platter which fits under the lid thus holding the subplatter and arms in place at the same time.

The broken piece of the lid does show though, that the package at least has been handled very agressively or dropped, but had the platter been removed or at least secured, it wouldn't have been damaged. The damage to the exterior of the Beogram could have been avoided by wrapping it in 5-10 layers of bubble wrap and then maybe double boxed it. Crossing my fingers though that you will be able to get though with a claim now that you have had this much trouble just getting the package to its destination in the first place.

Don’t be sorry Dennis, it is what it is. There was plent of packing material everywhere, like 3” of foam on every side etc. The transport screw is still in and the whole platter assembly moves up and down now. We’ll see what postnord says, but to ding it even externally through all that foam is a big feat to accomplish unfortunatelyIndifferent

Either way, the hunt continues now to get a beogram...

For next week's "Rant & Rave" department:

https://www.philips.co.uk/c-p/65OLED984_12/oled-9-series-4kuhd-oled-plus-android-tv-b-w-sound-with-ambilight-4-sided

Oddly, WhatHiFi's photos are better than the manufacturer's: https://www.whathifi.com/us/reviews/philips-65oled984

Pluses include cable management inside the stand!  Minuses include Android TV (but hey, there's a new version now).  Depending on your fashion sense, interesting but maybe off-putting are Ambilight and the B&W Cyclops look.  Oh, and a double-sided remote -- I haven't seen a decent double-sided remote since the Sony KDL-##EX403 Bravia series TVs, which had only a single round power button on the back so you could leave the ugly side turned-over on the coffee table.

Supposedly pricing versus Philips' standard models is +£1500 extra for the B&W speaker, so it approximates the Stage in size, build, features, and price.

Looks very copy pasta from B&O yes. I don’t really like it and android is dreadfull imho, but the only feature i like is the ambilight. I’ve seen a review of it somewhere and they weren’t impressed with the sound at all.

It’s very meh and the b&w style tweeter makes it even worse to me lol
