Hi All,

I need your input on what you think could be the source of the problems I'm having with my Bang and Olfsun 5500.  I recently bought this system from an estate sale and couldn't be more excited to be an owner.  However, there are issues that need to fixed with both the cassette player and the CD player.

BEOCORD 5500 Cassette Recorder:

All the functions seem to work from both the MCP and on the unit itself.  However, the motor (I believe) is shot and the tray does not go in or out on its own and it has to be manually pulled out and pushed back in.  When I press "open", I just hear a grinding/ticking noise that last about 3-4 seconds and then stops.  This may be something I just come to deal with to avoid the repair cost.

Im including a picture of the inside of the unit and I am pointing at the (motor?) that is making the grinding noise when I try and open the tape tray.

BEOGRAM CD 5500 CD Player:

The tray opens and closes perfectly, the cd spins, the laser tries and seemingly reads the CD.  I can go through the tracks just fine, and the laser moves to the right locations (it appears).  Unfortunately, I get only heavy static, which does change based on the song that is playing, but you definitely can't make out any music -- just static/hissing/whining in different pitches.  This sound is coming from the speakers, not from the unit itself.

I have tried plugging the CD player in to the Tape 2 port on the back of the Beomaster 5500 and I get the same static sound.  I tried playing the 'tape player' through the cd port and I hear clear music for a split second before it goes silent.  The tape is still playing, but you can't hear anything from the speakers when the 'tape player' din cable is connected through the CD port on the back of the Beomaster.  Here is a video and two still shots of the internal components.

Any advice on either of these issues would be greatly appreciated.  If it needs professional repair, could anyone recommend someone in the NYC area?  Thanks!

Welcome to Beoworld !

Beocord: Check the belt for the drawer motor.
Beogram CD: Replace decoupling capacitors in the power supply and their related resistors.

Hi Martin,

Thank you for the warm welcome, and of course, your input!  I hear you are the man to go to for belt replacements on these units.

Im sure giving a remote diagnosis is not easy to do, but how confident are you in your diagnoses of these issues?  Just curious.

What does replacing the decoupling capacitors in the power supply (and their related resistors) consist of?  I am a relative newbie here.  Replacing a belt sounds doable, but the fix for the Beogram CD sounds like I will need a pro.  Do you provide replacement parts for this fix?

Thanks again for your help and advice.

-Andy

Most people can do at least some types of mechnical work, some are good at following instructions etc. and have the most basic hand-tools in the drawer, like a screwdriver and pair of pliers etc.

Electronics, diagnosing and repairing at component level inside a stereo component usually requires some education and
more tools (soldering etc.) and instruments than found in most common homes and are in most cases best left with a pro.

Parts are usually no problem. PM or email me what you need.

Also check the security of the  large pulley wheel in the Beocord as the fixing screw has been known to come loose and allows the gears to come out of mesh.
