Hi, I Have a couple of questions about the beogram 4500. I will be going through my beogram in the next few weeks recapping and servicing it.

1. I have noticed that when running the platter without a record it makes a rubbing noise when spinning.

2. When servicing the deck what lubricant should I use.

Regards and thanks.

1. Normal. It's the record sensing system that makes the sound, blocking the mech. and gears from engaging.

2. The original lubricants are listed in the servicemanual.
For the main spindle and the motor bearings use sinter oil.
For the carriage rail use a good quality lithium grease that doesn't run or harden. Choosing a type with a hint of teflon wouldn't hurt.

NEVER EVER use "3-1", "Household oil", WD40 or other "fix it all for a while but leave a sticky mess behind for ever" nasties.

Hi Dillen,

Thanks for you speedy reply.

1. When you say the record sensing system makes the sound, blocking the mech and gears from engaging. Im not sure what you mean as the deck will play records it just produces this rubbing sound. Which you can hear weather a record is on the platter or not.

There should be no rubbing sound with a record on the platter.
The record pushes down the black center tap which is part of the mech.

Is the sound also present if you take off the platter and rotate the subplatter by hand (keeping the black center down)?

The rubbing noise can be the suspension system. Are the 3 transport screws loosened all the way out, and if so, then maybe the leafsprings under the platter (also 3) that lifts the platter up, needs to be adjusted. It is in the service manual. If they are too loose, the platter will scrub the beogram when turning.

Hi Dillen,

Yes the sound is still present if I take the platter off with the black center down rotating the subplatter. Does this given a hint to the issue?

Could be the motor.
Take off the platter belt and try again.

Hi Noticed another issue whilst opening open the deck. The cord that winds around the tone arm was not threaded. After a closer look the thread is tensioned by a sping which is attached to a piece of plastic that moves on a guide bar. But the small bit of plastic the tension spring is attached to has snapped off. Any ideas how I fix this?

So what you gave here was misinformation.
It wouldn't play records. It merely rotated the platter.

Yes, it can be fixed.
Fit a screw up from below through the hole in the carriage foot. Fit a washer and a nut on top and fit the wire loop and the
spring  to the excess length of threading on the screw.
Then adjust the setdown point.
The servicemanual shows the correct path for the wire and how to do the adjustment.

I can supply correct belts, both the platter belt and the wedge-shaped belt for the carriage servo motor if you need (most decks do by now).

Hi Dillen,

1. No it wasnt missinformation the motor is making a noise and the platter was spinning, but after opening up the deck on the hinges I then discovered the issue with the string tension for the tone arm. Anyway just want to say thank you so much for your help I will attempt to fix it using your great advice.

2. The belts look good, although think they havent been changed in over 10 years so as part of my maintenance I think it would be an idea to change them, can you give me an idea of how to contact you about this and how much they cost, once ive tackled the tone arm issue I will replace them.

3. And most importantly, thank you so very much for all your wonderful support its people like you that help us so much and keep our products working.

Thanks.
