Dear members,

I've read on here that nothing except for a soft cloth can be used to clean the platters of the Beogram 4500/5500/6500/7000 etc. series turntables since otherwise the coating will be damaged. I made the experience myself how easily the coating gets damaged when trying with alcohol.

However, I have just acquired a Beogram 4500 with some dust and grease sticking to the platter. The same applied to the metal top, but this was easily cleaned. However, against the background from above, I am very reluctant in cleaning the platter. There is no way that I can remove the dirt without using something at least damp. I was thinking about applying white spirit, with which I have made good experience cleaning residue of adhesive on painted surfaces. Worked without scratching the paint. But what about the coating? Is there any way of cleaning off heavy dirt without removing the coat as well? Seems like a quandary...

Hints would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Kai

AFAIK there is no way to clean the platter without destroying the coating and I never found a satisfactory replacement coating.

The only way of achieving a satisfactory result is to source a lower value, cosmetically challenged or broken type 59xx deck with a good unadulterated platter!

I've used baby wipes in the past without causing damage to the coating

Cheers

Thanks for the replies. Is gentle rubbing with the baby wipes allowed or will this already cause damage?

Greetings, Kai
