Good catch. Either the cantilever/stylus were replaced, or the original black piece containing the model number came off (quite common they become unglued) and substituted with an MMC-1. Cantilever/stylus look like MMC-5 - except from the top. None of the MMC 1-5 look like that from the top..
And number scraped off the box, which BTW is from a MMC2 according to the part#.I agree - a faked cartridge.

I sent an email to him - let's see what he does.
To me it looks like an MMC1 cartridge someone sent to one of the repair shops and opted for an aluminum cantilever with an elliptical stylus. Whether the seller knows this is another question.
Seeing how the seller posted detailed photos of the actual cantilever and stylus makes me think they don't realize that the cartridge isn't really an original MMC1.

And/or they don't realize that the cantilever type gives it away without a doubt. All rebuilt cartridges I've seen, had a cut at the bottom from the surgery. This one doesn't.It could easily be a fairly unused cartridge - but it's neither an MMC1 or an MMC2.
I also emailed the seller.Nothing happens, which, I suppose, only suggests, that he is doing what he is doing on purpose.Bad seller.Poor buyer.
He's also selling a Beogram 5005 here. He indicates the MMC-4 was re-tipped by Audio Origin. They probably did the repair on the 'MMC-1'.
Hi,
Yes, I repaired it for him, to elliptical spec for £129,
Best regards Alistair
Audio origin
Wow! He found a buyer for over $500 USD. It would be interesting to see if the buy ever realizes they don't truly have a NOS MMC-1. Maybe they will never know. They (the buyer) didn't do much research into the purchase so maybe they are happy enough that the lettering on the cartridge says "MMC1".

Or, - if someone read this thread, went and bought it, initiates a dispute upon reception and gets his money back from Ebay/Paypal because the item is a fake. Then the roles are switched. It is after all a refurbished cartridge.
Hello,
He has cancelled the sale and relisted it more accurately but still fails to mention its more like an MMC4 or MMC5 now

Oh well, at least it's described fairly accurately now as something obviously went wrong with the original purchase. Your scenario may well be correct Martin.
Will be interesting to see what it goes for this time!
Cheers

Not sure how the listing is correct now - he's still calling it an MMC-1. The only things that make a cartridge an MMC-1 are the cantilever and stylus, both of which are MMC-5. An MMC-1 has a contact line nude diamond mounted on a sapphire cantilever. An MMC-5 has an elliptical stylus mounted on an aluminum cantilever And several of us emailed him prior to the auction end to point out his error yet he proceeded with the auction unchanged. My guess: the cartridge was returned for a refund by the buyer when he realized he'd been scammed..
it's more accurate as it says its elliptical
but he has also listed this now

Saying it has an "MMC 5 cartridge / stylus unused" when the cantilever is bent and there is dirt on the cover so yes he is definitely a scammer, and I certainly won't be working for him again
Best regards Alistair.
