Hi,

It has been some time I haven’t had an issue with my BM5. This morning, it didn’t start. Checked if it was still on the local network, but it wasn’t anymore. Rebooted, but after displaying the B&O logo and the start page asking to select BeoMaster5 or recovery, the screen went black. Tried recovery, but again, after what it seemed like the initiation of recovery, the screen went black after. Few seconds.

I suspect the motherboard is dead. Anyone a different view or suggestion to make?

The Local B&O repair station informed me that the replacement motherboard costs nearly 600€.

Well, since this is the second failure, I was thinking that it may be a good time upgrading to a more recent B&O device with similar functions.

My main use for the BM5 was to listen to BM5-stored music and web radio on two bathroom-located BeoSound 3500. The master TV is a BV7-55.

What more recent B&O device would you recommend as a replacement of BM5 having the same functions?

Indeed. Thanks! Seems like a very good deal! Noticed however that the spare number of the board is different from that indicated in the BeoMaster5 service manual. Have there been different BeoMaster5 motherboards?

Hi

have you tried reboot from recovery? You must plug a old fashion keyboard to the USB on the masterunit, then you can select the reboot with up and down  / enter.

BeoVision11, BeoVision10, BeoSound 5, BeoSound 3500, BeoLab 9, BeoLab 4, BeoLab 6000, BeoLab 8000, BeoSound 3200, Beosound Moment,NL/ML converter, delaybox, var.BeoPlay Speakers

Yes, I did try recovery, but after initiation of the process, the screen goes black.

B&O repair told me that the motherboard is dead.

With my limited understanding of PC functioning, I would say that if you see the invitation for recovery - it is already the part of Windows booting process. Since you get there - most probably BIOS and POST functions of the motherboard work fine. At least CPU, Memory, HDD and the VideoCard as well as USB since you are able to use keyboard.

My bet is that it is corruption of the main Windows or BM-recovery partition of the HDD.

That's an interesting hypothesis, but how to test it? It would be so much easier with the BeoMaster 5 ServiceTool!

I recall now that I had the similar case after relocation of the unit, when BS5 went into the black screen after the initial boot invitation. After minute or so the red LED started to send SOS signals. That happened again and again after reboot. I was thinking of worst, but the reason was only loose connection in one of the cables.

The explanation is that BS5 do not see all of the connected accessories,  cannot load the driver and stops booting.

So, it will not be useless anyway to take a look on all the connectors between head and the master unit, clean and check if they are inserted firmly. Who knows, it may help.

Thanks for the advice. In my case, BS5 is fine. The problem is BM5 unfortunately.

I replaced the BM5 motherboard with one purchased on eBay. Works (again) like a charm!

Of course, in the absence of BeoMaster 5 maintenance tool, the product has no serial number and the software updates cannot be performed. Surprinsingly, the Bang & Olufsen splash screen shows at start up instead of EPIA.

I reiterate my question: does anyone has the BeoMaster 5 maintenance tool?

Also, a probably naive question: can the original motherboard be repaired? It seems that all defective motherboards/modules of B&O products are sent back to Denmark for recycling/rejuvenation before being sold again (?)

Everything back to normal thanks to the help of forum members, fortunately. No help at all from B&O repair: the only comment I got from them was "démerdez-vous!" The French speaking people of this forum will appreciate...

It is possible to repair the motherboard. An electrician can replace the caps (which is usually what is bad) and then it works again!

Yes, that's what I thought too. It would be a shame to just get rid of the board, while the replacement of some components can give it a second life.
