Hi all,
it seems that my V1 did an automatic (as configured) software update today.
It is now able to display HbbTV info. I tried it for some minutes and it seems to be great, i.e. i am able to access the ZDF (german broadcaster) mediathek directly without an AppleTV or similar devices.
In the "information about current software" it is also mentioned that i am able to update to "SmartTV" functionality for a small fee and i should contact my B&O dealer for more information...
Does anybody have more information about SmartTV on a Beoplay V1 and/or additional features with the current software update?
I love my white industrial-look Beoplay V1...

... just look at the description of the BeoVision 11 where SmartTV is a standard feature.
Ah...sorry, i forgot to mention:
It is also mentioned there should be an app "BeoRemote" which is able to control a SmartTV.
I still have to check for this app.
The software version on the Beoplay V1 is now 1.0.1.28219, released on Oct 15.
The V1 is fitted with an additional DVB-S2 module and installed in Germany.

Many thanks for posting this.
I wait with interest to see how this will affect me as an very proud owner of a V1 in Bauhaus grey here in Australia!
Best Regards
John...
Just to add that I've downloaded and installed the update on my V1, as well as installed the B&O remote app. on my iPad.
In the source list on the V1, resetting the 'media' input to default, renames it 'Home media' and under the main menu at the bottom near service and network, there is a new menu item; - 'activate features'.
It would appear (if it applies in Australia of course) that one can visit a dealer, pay a small fee, and then active Webmedia via an activation code supplied by the dealer.
Meantime the B&O remote app on the iPad available from the app store on iTunes works superbly; smooth, fairly straightforward to use, elegant looking, and more or less duplicates the functions of the Beo 4.
One can put the TV into Standby, change volume, channels etc, switch inputs and so on. It works very well with using the Apple remote on the iPad to control my gradually growing ALAC music library on my Mac, as when playing music or video to an Apple TV, for some reason there is no remote volume control of the Apple TV; by also having the B&O remote app open, I can simply swap between the two apps on the iPad and control the volume of the TV without having to pick up the Beo 4.
Very happy indeed and it is so good to see B&O developing the feature set of the V1 - which makes it even better value and nicer again to use and interact with.
Best regards
Pay EXTRA for the Smart-TV feature? They must be kidding.

I have updated my V1 and it is mostly like it was before, havent noticed any big differences yet. Except the "activate features" choice in the settings. I wonder what a "small fee" is according to B&O :). I´ll have to ask my retailer tomorrow.
mibook84:Pay EXTRA for the Smart-TV feature? They must be kidding.
Beoworld app with direct photo upload and emoticons.
It feels almost as the sound is a bit better. Perhaps also some adjustment to the image system, contrast seems deeper now which I messed a bit before. But it might also be the current light situation in my room that makes it look beter but I can almost swear that blacks are more black now.
PhilLondon:Indeed. B&O has everything to loose for doing so. It is really bad for their image to artificially lock features. But they have a bad habit of doing so: - Beo5/6 config software that isn't available to the public, - Beomaster 5 that restricts some features when the Beosound 5 isn't connected. - App for which you have to pay to get Internet radios. - having to pay extra to be able to unlock a feature in the bv7 to be able to control a hdmi matrix. While this release should send users over the moon for giving them something extra, it's going to tarnish B&O image instead. I wonder if it makes this TV compatible with the new Network Link.?

You are right, they have made those choices but I really think this is a new low for them.
This could be expected from microsoft or some cheasy low price brand tv. But B&O? The TV itself cost more than two other tvs with built in smart tv :). I understand that there might be a cost for the development of the smart-tv platform but surely they had it all in the pipeline for the V1 but didnt finish it in time. I am not very happy about it at all. And about costs like this, take for example the beoplay A8 where you can get a FREE lightning-connector to go with it, that is a real thing which I guess actually costs more than a silly software update.
I did not really find the smart-tv feature of the BV11 to be any good at all compared to the Apple TV so it is almost awkward that they want to cash in on it.
They must have made changes to the image processing. It looks so much better now. I was annoyed at small artifacts in the picture before like vertical banding that was almost invisible, I cant see it right now at all. And the colors appear much stronger. Hard to explain.
1983beo:Jan There is no hbbtv menu. When you're provider support hbbtv you will get the hbbtv menu automatic.

In my case (Austria), the HbbTV notification gets displayed in the lower right hand corner in case available. You'd then simply need to press the red button on the Beo4, which will bring up the related menu.
I agre with you Michael it's wrong for B&O to charge the 100euro for the Smart Tv extra. It's the BV11 which I was wanting until Peter said the basic stand is an extra £300+ It really disgusted me - thats more than a 32" Samsung TV. Since then i've realised I can do without spending some of my savings on it and instead i've gone for two nice holidays instead.
I noticed that instead of fixing the problem with formats in "HOME MEDIA" they did just remove the feature and replaced it with a message saying the format can not be changed in home media. Unbelievable. What are they doing?

That sounds expensive? According to my retailer all stands cost the same I think, about 1500-2000 SEK but I might have forgot.
Just tried the iPad app a bit, it is very much fun.
Paul I don't like the idea of paying an extra fee for a stand either. But if I want the product, and it is at a level of design and quality that truly satisfies me, then I will pay that - within reason. it is after all, not an extortionate price, and whilst not cheap is probably reflected in the tools and labour costs to make the stand.
Certainly nothing to be disgusted about IMHO.
PS: Where are you heading for hols? Somewhere exotic I hope...
John....
PPS: I have edited this post which I first made whilst feeling stung by a personal attack made upon me on another HiFi forum.
As such, writing in the heat of the moment, I feel having calmed down that my comments were inappropriate, and have edited them out, and also sent a PM to Paul to explain and apologise for any unintentional misunderstanding.
Have they sorted out the game lag yet ?

Great to hear this. This is a positive :-)
Flappo: Have they sorted out the game lag yet ?
Not sure, I have to hook my playstation up to the TV and check - when I have the time and energy :)

No harm done what so ever John.
To me, paying extra for a simple stand was wrong especially as I personally feel that £5000 is a lot of money to spend on a beautifully designed TV with a Samsung screen and nice set of speakers. Plus of course it wasn't available in the colour option that I wanted. My heart and brain was telling me it was a no no!
John, I go skiing every December with France which i'm thrilled about but this year, i'm also doing the Maldives in the third week of January - to me, one of the most beautiful places on earth. A proper swimming/diving holiday with amazing seafood! It's a place that when I visit, I spend the rest of the year thinking about it!

WOW! About the closest I'm likely to get to the Maldives is in a James Bond movie!
Then again, there is always the Great Barrier Reef and far north Queensland.....
Hoping you have a fabulous time - still think you should get the BV11 though...
Kind regards

Chris Townsend:Go to Centre Parcs Paul, and buy the bloody telly :-/
The day Paul has to compromise and go to Centre Parcs to get an expensive TV to goggle at from his sofa, is the day I agree we've all gone mad on this board. I know plenty of people these days who do not have a TV at all. They have plenty of other better things to do and, frankly, I can see where they are coming from. There's barely anything compelling enough on TV these days. Certainly not enough to ditch going skiing and spending £6000 to watch it.

Haha Chris and Moxxey :) Chris, I think Centre Parcs would probably cost nearly as much :)
Being honest Moxxey, most of my viewing is action sports/travel videos (usually in 720/1080p) from horror horror YouTube :) I download them and have them in my iTunes :) If I buy a film now, I buy it in iTunes etc.
Might have to settle for a white V1 but both the BV11 & V1 are fabulous in their own way.
Great to see BV10s and BS8s in the new BoConcept interiors brochure...

John, the Maldives is incredible! 32 degrees in January and the ocean is hotter than a bath!!!
It looks identical to the pictures that you see in the magazines! Really a perfect holiday for relaxing! Very cool that can swim to each restaurant on the beach!
I did find it funny the last time that I was there and the lady massaging me asked if I could get her a job in London as the Maldives 'can get rather boring' damn, some people are never happy!!!
One thing that made me laugh a few years back was that my beach house had a crt television in it - i'd never heard of the brand BUT IT HAD ELECTRONIC CURTAINS just like a B&O!!!!!!!! I was gutted as I had a BV6 at the time and that didn't have :)
By the way, the new James Bond 007 movie does look rather good! I'm sure Moxxey will be wanting one of those Tom Ford suits!
Hi Shinobi
Yes (I didn't want to mention the BS5 ;) Great to see a contemporary interior furnishings company using the B&O designs :) Have you seen the orange lamp!!! I have that in my lounge & bedroom!!! RETRO!

I can readily identify with this. Free to air TV usually appeals to the lowest common denominator as regards the mainstream commercial channels. Pay for view, or cable TV is scarcely any better, and you still have to put up with brain numbing ads.
If that was all that was available re content for a TV, I think I'd also hestiate to spend large amounts of money on an expensive upmarket TV.
Like you, I tend to watch a lot of video clips on youtube, save them to iTunes and watch them via an Apple TV3 on my V1. In 720p or better yet 1080p the picture quality is fantastic. I'm a car and aviation buff, so have heaps of movie clips to watch. Similarly, I download a lot of podcast content from iTunes re related hobbies and interests, which I can also view over the network to the V1.
I'm an avid movie fan, and have a large collection of DVD's and Blurays - I pretty much prefer to buy the movie on Bluray and watch it at home then spend to go to the theatre these-days - it's cheaper and generally a more enjoyable experience overall. The only disadvantage is storage of physical media, but until we get super high speed broadband and movies on iTunes can equal or better Bluray for overall quality, Bluray/physical media is my tool of choice for movie viewing.
For free to air? - not much really, apart from interesting documentaries that come up, natural history or travel programs etc - I'm very selective about my viewing.
The point is though, is that there is enough content of personal interest out there to make the purchase of a high performance 'designer' TV well worth while as an entertainment medium in the home speaking personally. If it was just Freeview, and the lowest common denominator dross, I doubt I'd bother, but with the content available, and the likes of a V1 or better to view it on, it was a no brainer really to buy the V1.
Along with my Apple bits and pieces, easily the best consumer goods I've ever bought in terms of ownership satisfaction - B&O TV's may not be cheap, but they certainly deliver in terms of pleasure of ownership!
All the Best
I totally agree with you John. The only channels that I loved on Sky satellite Fashion TV, Luxe HD (an International lux brand/sport/destination) channel and Rush HD (Extreme Sports) have all vanished from the satellite platform :(
I would indeed use the B&O TV as a music system hifi most of time. In fact, I did that when I had my little BV6-22 as it was a really pleasant sounding TV for a bijou apartment at the time. You're a great spokesman for the V1 as you always have so many nice things to say about it. B&O should go back to their advertising days of when they had international customers talking about their systems. I remember a real cool surfer dude who had my Century at the time in a 1999 brochure :) I REALLY MISS that human feel from years past in the B&O catalogues - it was a really inspiring read every October when the catalogue was published :)
John have you seen the vintage Mercedes in the original Beosound 8 advert in the garage? I always imagine your car to be like that!
