I don't believe that you risk damage unplugging an appliance from the mains, i have done that with every electrical product i have owned with no issues once properly turned off at the switch.
From an av receiver to tvs in the past and by not doing that i find that your wasting electric aswell as it being bad for the enviroment and i just generally prefer to have stuff unplugged from the mains when not in use especially if i'm not at home for a few days.

Hey Shinobi,
What do you mean by it's free? I was under the impression the V1 smart TV upgrade cost £100/100€ or so (not entirely convinced it's worth it...)
Thanks, Jon
Oh really? Excellent! Do I need to contact the dealer?
shinobi52:Hi ! I've just made the smart tv update ( It's free guys!) Feedback will come in à few hours. Cheers

Sorry guys... just got this from the dealer.
The Smart TV upgrade for BeoPlay V1 has indeed been launched (4 months early!) but unfortunately the information you have been given is not correct. The upgrade is priced at £100. Any confusion may come about because until the end of this year Bang & Olufsen are shipping televisions with Smart TV for the original price. From 1stJanuary the retail price will increase by £100.
The current version of the Smart TV function is available to see in-store. The highlights are BBC iPlayer and a very nice iPad friendly version of YouTube.

Being a lovely sunny day with spring in full force, and prompted by an Xmas sale promotion email, I visited my B&O dealer yesterday. The news for Australian customers is that the activation code for the smart TV functions is not yet on the B&O system - but should be by the end of the week; projected cost was quoted as A$129.00.
Interestingly it was pointed out that this charge is what B&O have to pay, for the licence to gain access to the smart TV functions, purportedly supplied by a third party, hence the licensing requirement, and resultant charge to B&O which it appears will be passed on to current customers/owners of the V1, or built in to the price of the new sets come January, by the sound of things.
I saw it on a new BV11 55" and it looked very good, albeit the number of apps is a little limited - but it's early days.
I did read somewhere else a while back that B&O had joined a consortium of manufacturers using a smart TV platform, so I would think it only a matter of time before the number of applications available blossom.
I had bigger fish to catch on my visit to the dealer, re some serious thoughts about speakers, but I daresay in time I will add the smart TV function to my V1
Best Regards
John...
The dealer updated me - the cost is actually £85 over here which I guess isn't too bad considering the licensing cost to B&O and that you're buying into a current platform which will have newer apps pushed out to it.
What speakers are you thinking about John? I am very happy with my setup of 8000s/6000s and a 2 with the V1, all of which (except the TV) I picked up in very lightly used immaculate condition at bargain prices!

I'm thinking of Lab 9's Jonathon. Lab 5's are my dream, but just too much money in one basket for the time being I've decided - there are too many other areas of my life I'd like to address with funds, and having bought a car earlier this year, and the V1..... Lab 5's will have to wait a little longer.
I've never bought pre-owned HIfi before, but am chasing up some of the UK based Pre-owned specialists re stock. On the other hand, if I put that new bed I've been planning on getting on the back burner for a bit longer, i can 'afford' new with the difference between pre-owned and new made up by forgoing the aforesaid piece of furniture! Decisions, decisions....lol
My local dealer has a 15% off sale on 1 year old demo speakers, but they have some marks, which could be fixed by replacement parts, at my expense. Given that though, I think I'd rather just go new, or IF i could get little used/immaculate Lab 9's pre-owned, that would be the other option to make decent savings.
I'm swinging slightly in favour of emptying the bank account re going new, as with Lab 9's, unless they were to bring out a vastly superior model for similar money, I doubt I'd ever part with them. If I was to later get Lab 5's, I'd simply put the 9's as rears in a 5.1 SS configuration with the Lab 5's up the front.
Given that over time, speakers will 'drift' slightly re capacitor values changing etc, albeit more-so with a passive crossover, where the Lab series are fully active, means that new will give me the longest life If I'm planning to keep long term.
I guess it's a bit like buying a car really; they all cost money - either new and suffer the depreciation, or second hand and suffer the increased maintenance costs, or in the case of a second hand active speaker, the possibility of repairs to either amplification and drivers etc, depending upon how old they are and how they've been treated by previous owners. If you're planning to keep long term, then either new cars or new speakers are probably(?) the best bet overall.
One thing I'll say about B&O - unlike most HIFi they seem to hold their prices really well even after 5 years old etc.
If you've any ideas, or comments, perhaps drop me a line so as not to make public remarks about dealers which may or may not be appropriate on the forums?
As I say, I've never bought pre-owned HiFi, so am a bit of a babe in the woods in that regard.
Kind regards
Hi all,
a new Software update has arrived on Dec. 7th. The description is not very useful, it says nothing. I found a new function which has to be activated (like the smart TV feature) with a code which is called HDMI Matrix. Does anybody know what that means? I cannot imagine what feature is hidden behind this name.

Have they sorted out the lag problems in the GAME mode yet ?
Beosound Stage, Beovision 8-40, Beolit 20, Beosound Explore.
I can't , sorry
I think the V1 looks awful and wouldn't have one as a gift. Ok , I would and I'd trade it in for a bv11 !
I'm afraid that I convince you Chris.
Panasonic is probably one of the BEST performing brands out there and oh my gosh they last and last 10, 15 years plus. Being honest they are the only brand that puts up with my 'tough' use ;)
Gotta say the V1 looked incredibly cheap & ugly yesterday when it was placed alongside that amazing BV11. I tried to impress friends with the V1 yesterday & they walked off saying they preferred Panasonic's top offerings... I think the frosty, snooty & boring reception from the shop assistants at Selfridges didn't help. We'd been to the Apple store minutes before were we were greeted with enthusiastic staff & told to enjoy ourselves. The B&O stand at Selfridges was the complete opposite & TOTALLY DEGRADED the B&O brand with its pompous shop assistants!
Hi Kiwi, I have some months the V1 and very pleased with it, including the industrial- look you mentioned. BeoPlay V1: less is more The V1 has limitations comparing with BV 11 but having outstanding picture quality and it is much lower priced. The “less“ features could be turned into “more“ features without paying hundred of Euros extra’s. Design. The modern industrial design of Anders Hermansen is already a “more” feature in our living room: the V1 has a nice fit with the table and chairs of the minimalist design of Poul Kjaerholm, Denmark, created in 1951. Despite of antireflection glass polarizer of BV11, it is still suffering a little bit from incoming lights. That is why the lack of this glass panel rather a “more” V1 feature than less. Masterlink V1 is not including a Masterlink but it can easily be linked with the 4 Beolab speakers via the BeoSound 3000. Pushing the Beo4 A.MEM button, the sound can be properly and separately controlled from the TV speakers. The lack of headphone socket on V1 back plate could be turned in “more” feature by connecting the V1 PL1 socket to the Sennheiser wireless headphone system by using a RJ45 adapter cable. Thus my wife can read a book while I watching a football match. Blu-Ray, Apple TV and Smart TV Apple TV (V.MEM) and a Panasonic Blu-Ray player (DVD) are connected to V1 and controlled by Beo4. Baying a Feature Activation Key for 100 Euro, the V1 has the same Smart TV (DTV button on Beo4) functions as the BV11. The Bang & Olufsen’s free BeoRemote app for iPad allows me to browse the Internet just as they would appear on my computer. All functions controlled with Beo4 Mark IV Literally the V1 controlled by less remote controls, I use only one. The Beo4 selecting and switching between radio stations, CD music, DVD videos, television programs, Apple TV and Smart TV. It operates properly in every possible spots in the living room without directing the eye to the source. We used the Beo4 years but realize more and more how ingenuous David Lewis invented it (Mark I) in 1994. First and last I think that the new “less is more” philosophy behind the BeoPlay V1 will strength our confidence in Bang & Olufsen. It was not so evident in the last years.

I'm probably wrongly informed and happy to be corrected Paul, but my perception is that pomposity is an English trait in the 'upper classes'. Perhaps you need to come visit Australia Paul, where we don't have that sort of 'class' social structure and pompous behaviour, and the service is impecable in the B&O stores from my own experience having visited the stores here in Victoria, and also interstate in South Australia and New South Wales.
One thing I have learned is that different people, be they acquaintances or friends, all have different perceptions about quality, and what is good looking, well styled, value for money etc, or not. When it comes to buying decisions, if I listened to my friends, I would either wind up with nothing, or a bit of this, combined with a bit of that, and so on. Only YOU know what is right for you in your life, be it the relationships you cultivate or the material things you choose to put in your environment. Most friends give 'advice' based upon what THEY would do or buy, rather than thinking through what might be right for YOU.
The V1 is not as beautiful as an BV11 - for sure, but I do not find it ugly or cheap looking at all - not one iota.
And just for a little perspective on a tit for tat basis...lol.... and with tongue firmly in cheek... whilst I love their style, I could argue that Audis are somewhat pretentious girly cars for fashion victims rather than offering pure driving ability for the true car enthusiast - I note an AMG spokesman recently said that front wheel drive is for children...lol Now I'm stirring and poking a little fun here, but see how perceptions work? They're just that, perceptions and very subjective and individual.
However, I will say that whilst you vaciilate about buying anything B&O, and have ummed and aahed over a BV11, that a V1 in the hand is worth two BV11's in the bush...
I love my V1, and should the occasion arrive in the future where I might be able to get a BV11, I'd be keeping the V1 for sure - it's too nice in terms of it's performance and looks to part with IMHO.
And lets not forget that for many of us, money doesn't grow on trees, and the relatively moderate cost of the V1 has allowed me to purchase new Lab 9's to go with it, whereas if it were a BV11, that'd be it - the cost would've eaten up the Lab 9 budget as well, so the V1 has lots of advantages that many of us consider beyond beauty, which after all, and as most come to recognise in time, is only skin deep.

I noticed last night that the newest software update brought changes to the Picture format menu. I did not like the old menu but the new one is much better but have not had much time to play with the new choices yet. They are, on my swedish tv: AUTO (1)AUTOBREDD (AUTO WIDTH) (2)FIXED A (3)FIXED B (4)FIXED C (5)FIXED D (6)
I noticed that there was a new update out today that my V1 has not found earlier (even if the TV says the update was released 2013.01.17). Version nr is 1.0.2.29380 and I have so far found the following differences:• New meny in settings: "Produktintegration"(Product integration). When you enter the menu you get one choise "Anslut till B&O" (Connect to B&O). Next step goes down to another menu with "anslut till - ingen"(connect to - none)" and "vm-alternativ"(vm-alternative). I think this might be for the Masterlink adapter that was made available for the BV11, perhaps now possible to use with the V1 also?
• Possibility to allow wake on wlan from BeoRemote-app (I think it was possible before also but then it said that it would consume more energy - it does not say this now). There is also two of the same setting, the other one has a description in swedish: "Om TV:n är ansluten till en BeoLink-omvandlare för NL/ML, måste funktionen VÄCKNING I LAN vara aktiverad" (If the TV is connected to a BeoLink-adaptor for NL/ML the setting wake up on Lan must be activated"). Funny enough both settings say WLAN, probably spelling mistake.

Many thanks Michael - I'll check my V1-40 for the update!
I'm still in love, and could only be further smitten by a BV11!
Michael:... Next step goes down to another menu with "connect to" - "none" and "vm-alternative".
"VM-OPTION" is what we know in a ML-sytem as "V.OPT" VM = Video Master - at the moment you can only choose option "1" "2" and "4" Option "5" and "6" needed to configure a TV in a ML-system as a Link Room TV are not yet available.
PS: Interesting things happen if there are other NL-TVs - eg. BV11s or V1s - connected to the same network. Then you get instead of "none" a list of these TVs. You are able to select sources being connected to the other TVs. !!Not fully working right now!! , but enough to catch a glimpse of the future of NL
To bad they didn´t announce this when they first sold the V1. I already bought a Bosscom switch.
I think this decition was made later (whoever made it?) - it was not thought of at the time of the launching.
But it became clear that there is potential in a NL-enabled V1!
Even if you have a BV11, you may want a second or third tv for kitchen, bedroom.... aswell.
Few people would buy a second or third BV11, BUT the V1 is for many in financial reach.
Linking them up via NL makes new things possible - just think of the BeoRemote.
And to avoid that (as we often see) old Bang & Olufsen-costumers simply walk away - and chooce a non-BV-tv because of the high price of the BV11 - it is cleaver to let the V1 work as VideoMaster with an existing ML-AudioMaster-setup through adding support for the new BeoLink-converter.
Greetings Millemissen
There is a tv - and there is a BV
Maybe in Struer they should even take one further step:
Take the V1 out of the B&O PLAY range - and make it a Bang & Olufsen product.
It is a better future step to take out the BV11 out the Bang & Olufsen range and make a BeoPlay of it. We all respect David Lewis but his time has gone. Let the new designers change the B&O image!

You connect the NL-converter to your masterlink network and your ethernet network, and voila. Only one connection from the TV to the ethernet network is needed.
Oh, so you need just one NL-adaptor to use with several V1/V11 and possibly newer products. Perhaps the Encore could get a better life with NL-support?
