The Core has IR support now - but in a transition period, a store might have both versions available. The IR support is great news for BL5 owners, too.

How can we tell the difference between the two variants ? I seem to remember it’s not obvious ...

No, I have 2 with IR. the DPL port is used but it still says DPL not IR.

I do have to say it works fine.

The old one became obsolete in mid-May (ie sold out from DK). The new one has the following type no. 3051 (replaces type no. 2797)

I am confused.

Is the older one an IR Core?

And the newer one wasn’t IR but is now?

Thanks,

AM

IR was a feature requested at the very first dealer meeting after the launch, but it took its time before they got around to launching it.

But just to be clear as mud: the old one did not have IR, the new and current one does have it. It is a very nice device now for owners of the BeoLab 5 as they can use the latest technology to stream and listen to music.

Hi

How does that work when a Beolab 5 needs a CD signal to use the SPDIF input?

Very interesting indeed.

I suppose, that you mean the possibility to connect ‘via digital’?

Could you write a few words about how to connect and control - does a small guide exist?

Normally you will have to use the CD command to open the BL5 for the digital connection.

So....how are the BL5’s activted, when connected to the Core?

Do you have to connect via ‘digital out’ and via PL from the Core as well?

I just set up a new Core with Beolab 5's. The speakers power up the Core is activated via the app. As far as I'm aware, no need for the digital out connections to be used in this configuration.

Sound quality is brilliant via Spotify!!

How is your Core connected to the BL5’s?

The recommended setup is to use the digital end-to-end signal from the Core to the BL5 (via optical-to-coax-converter) and at the same time use the PowerLink connection in parallel to maintain data communications. This setup avoids static noise.

How does the BL5 get to know to use the SPDIF input?

The BL5 will give priority to a signal received on the SPDIF socket over PowerLink.

Thanks Roger - very helpfull.

A set of BL20 or BL18 via SPDIF driven by the Core would also be nice ;-)

Are you sure? With a Beosound 9000 / Beocenter 2 setup the only possibility to activate SPDIF was to use CD as source. That's why I was using my BL5 in Option 1 (Volume Control via Beo4).

You are correct - a better way to explain it is by example:

The BeoSound 9000 and BeoLab 5 were designed for each other: Listening to radio and the speaker signal would be carried through the PowerLink only, activate CD and the BS9k would get this data communicated through the PowerLink and would give preference to the SPDIF (if present) - but would still work in "radio mode" if no digital signals were present.

That would mean, that only the source, that can be activated via the CD command throught the ir/Core, would activate the digital connection.

Any other source/command would ‘play’ through the analog/PL.

According to the list of ir-commands for the Essence (would be the same for the Core, I suppose), that would be activating ‘Spotify’.

Not very usefull for most Core users ;-(

So - we are still waiting for activating the DPL port for a pure digital output....and for the fitting speakers.

Not very usefull for the current BL5 users, I know.

(And how would we connect the ir-eye in that case?)

It's connected using cables I bought from Steve at Sound Heavenly.

The required cable is Old DIN Powerlink (for the BL5 end) to RJ45 Powerlink into the Core. Then you connect a traditional DIN Powerlink from the same Lab 5 to the other Lab 5.

Don't want to hijack the thread but see attached for owners of Beolab 5's who want to connect to Core.

Thanks David.

Now all we need is that ‘little extra’ information from Beowise.

It still is a question, how the BL5’s turn on.....when they need the CD command for opening the coax-in.
