Do I use glue or double sided cellotape or is there a better way?
See photos below.
First you need to remove the plastic pieces that surround the edge of the glass when it is in place. There is a little cross head screw under the front left hand edge of the panel - undo this and the plastic frames slide to the right slightly and unclip. Note where each plastic piece goes as you remove them, as you will need to replace in the same positions so that it goes back together properly.
To refix the glas to the plastic frame pieces I have always used super glue 'gel' - just a small amount applied over the existing tape and residue. Some people on the forum take the trouble to remove the tape, and residue, and replace with new double sided tape. The gel method has worked very well for me on the three that I have repaired.
When re-glueing the plastic frames to the glass, fit the two end frames first as this then makes it much easier to get the centre pieces (top and bottom) exactly in the centre - this needs to be precise so that the re-assembled panel will slot correctly back into place.
Please pardon my ignorance, but I have not yet disassembled my own:
It looks like the glass is just sitting on top, and thus the unit would act as its own template/alignment tool, without worrying about removing the plastic rails and putting them back on perfectly. What prevents you applying the glue around the perimeter plastic/tape, and just dropping the glass back from the top? If you hold the glue back from two diagonal corners, it seems like it would even make a perfect spot to rest the sides of thumbs & forefingers when lowering the glass so it doesn't slide as you lower it and make a mess? (I guess that's an argument for new tape because the fumes from the cyanoacrylate might attack the edge of the silvering above, even if you wedge in a cardboard shield while applying glue? Although the unit in the photo already looks like it has seen some wear & tear there...)
Thanks for any additional hint(s) you might offer.
It is really not difficult to do once you remove the plastic frames - and if gluing, removal reduces the risk of excess glue sticking the frames in position such that you would never be able to remove the front panel again!
Whether gluing or taping, I would have no hesitation in removing the four plastic frames first. It's really not a difficult task. Unlike modern 'throw away' kit, it is designed to be easily disassembled for repair!
