KMA: Home Media features of BV11 are growing on me. The B&O-style user interface works very well, and Home Media organises everything perfectly: artists, albums, songs, genres, etc. So if I want to listen to music on BV11, I no longer feel any need to do it via Apple TV. Cover art is shown correctly without requiring any extra steps, just connecting BeoVision 11 to the Plex Server wirelessly (BV11 found the server with no additional configurations needed). Movie playback is also as flawless as it is on Apple TV. I've tried several movies (.MKV, .AVI), and they play nicely. Cover art for movies works just as it does with music. Cute little thumbnails! So now I see no reason to fire up Apple TV, when wanting to watch a movie I have on my computer.

KMA - "thank you" seems so inadequate. You are a legend ! for writing in such depth and with such completeness.
A small favour to ask, could you take a couple of pictures of the interface as it appears when you are browsing PLEX for movies, TVs, and music ?
I would like to see how the PLEX meta-data is streamed and presented on the BV11.
And do you have the screenshots of the B&O iPad App in use ?

Elephant, could the BV11 be your new toy for 2013?
Seems as though it is totally good enough to be used as a music system too :)

I agree ... I better buy some lottery tickets
Hehe Elephant,
two weeks ago someone in France won 170 Mio Euro ( 170.000.000 Euro ) how many BV11 are that ;-)
I would definitely go for one or even two.
BS9000, BC6, BC2, BL3, BL11, BL3500, BL2000, BeoTime, Beo EarSet2 3i, Beo, BEO DropStop, BEO Bottle Opener, BeoCom5 including Table Stand, ATV

KMA: My thanks to Mads for pointing out the use of Plex Media Server for BV11 (I'm also using it for Apple TV). Plex Media Server indeed works flawlessly with BV11, and given that the Media Server is one the easiest to use, Plex is the choice. Now that I've had the server feeding my BV11, Home Media features of BV11 are growing on me. I think the way the media is organised by the Plex madia server and not the TV. I my case all the categories are the same when I see the on my Beoplay V1 Home media, my jailbroken Apple Tv, My iphone or Plex media center on my computer.

madskp:I am also interested to see this cause I like to know if it is different from the Home media interface on the Beoplay V1 which in my opinion is a little to simplistic and the cover art is too small.
Simplistic and arcane - a media centre should not look like a DOS interface to file names !
Has anybody any experience of connecting a Synology NAS to the BV11? Does 1080p .mkv work fine? Subtitles?
KMA, does it come with the active 3D glasses?
Cheers.

I believe the glasses are not included in the package. Price in Sweden is 1200 SEK (approx 910 Euro)

Kind of crazy, for about 11 000 SEK you get a samsung 46" with a wireless bluetooth keyboard, remote, android tablet (no thanks) and two 3d-glasses (active) - and a wall mount :) with built in smart-tv with support for netflix, viaplay etc.
BV11-46 cost 72 000 SEK in Sweden, without any mount, any remote and any 3D-glasses, and smart-tv with no apps for streaming or use. Of course the quality differ but I mean, for that price and since the tv is 3D. Why not include the glasses? Come on B&O, it is really stupid. They dont cost anything to produce. I believe they even use the same kind as samsung, connected over bluetooth.
Beolab 50, Beolab 8000 x 2, Beolab 4000 x 2, BeoSound Core, BeoSound 9000, BeoSound Century, BeoLit 15, BeoPlay A1, BeoPlay P2, BeoPlay H9 3rd Gen, BeoPlay H6, EarSet 3i, BeoVision Eclipse Gen 2 55", BeoPlay V1-40, BeoCom 6000 and so much else :)

Please let us NOT go into the price discussion again... this has been discussed over and over and over and over again...
I still can't believe a Porsche costs 250.000€ where a Skoda costs 15.000€... They're both cars, 4 wheels... And VW is the shareholder.. So Porsche must be stupid...
Anyway.. please let's not go into a price discussion again...

The Beovision comes without 3d glasses. But you can use the xpand x103. I have tested them and you must use "manufacture: xpand". Here in Germany you can get them for 35 Euro (amazon.de). The X103 are exactly the same as the Original B&O. They synchronise over infrared and not over bluetooth, so no Samsung works!
But the 3d Modus is nice.

Hi Spoken, interesting and nice to see. Strange that they are using IR instead of Bluetooth - as far as I understand they sync much better over bluetooth. But it is of course cheaper for B&O this way.
Hi Michael, the syncing is no problem. The 3d Modus works very well on the Beovision 11. I was very sceptical in the beginning about 3d at all, but after testing it, it is a nice feature.
But there are not so many 3d blurays at the moment, and the fact that most of them are for the kids, i needed 4 glasses for the whole family, but 120€ per glasses? I wasn't pleased, but at 35€ the situation has changed:)

Good to hear that at least =). Yes and the 3d-movies are more expensive also. I have a samsung 55" 3d-tv at home and I have never seen a 3dmovie on it, just the short movies you can watch from a experience-3d-app in their smart tv feature. At 35 euro the glasses are a bit better priced but why do B&O charge 120? sounds a bit too much even for B&O if the same glasses retails for 35E. Anyway, which tv did you get?
The list price of the xpand x103 is 90€. The 35€ is a special offer.
First i get the 11-40 for my sleeping room, but it has a transport damage, so i will get the 11-46 in exchange because it can be a little bigger, even if the tv is just 1,8 m away from the viewing point. The picture is so brilliant that even with the tv picture the 46 will make sense.

That is a nice bedroom TV =). I have the V1-40 in my bedroom which I enjoy a lot and I think that is quite expensive for what I use it for. I am thinking BV11-55 for the living room but I might wait for the next version since the video unit is so new. But mostly because I don't think B&O takes masterlink seriously right now. I want to play music mostly in my living room so it must be easy to connect as a stereo with the TV part off. (not pressing P.Mute all the time).
If the price is 90 then I understand it more. 35 sound very good. I should buy a pair a few years before the tv almost :)
After reading about the Cheaper 3d glassestake a peek at this!

Hi Beofan,
Thanks. Looking forward to your experience.
Thanks for all the effort in writing this detailed review, KMA.
I have just ordered my new BV11-55 yesterday and was told it'll already arrive around the 30th of this month. I have opted against the NL/ML converter myself: I find it too expensive of a backward tool with too little use in the future. My BC2 and BV5 will move into the bedroom therefore. So after all the good years it's Goodbye to Masterlink and Hello to DNLA and NAS now.
What I do find a little annoying though is that even now B&O sell the majority of speakers with Powerlink sockets and I as the consumer get no Powerlink sockets on the newest equipment anymore - and am expected to pay for the adaptors myself :-(
I am yet interested to hear what difference it'll make to have 6 BL 8000s connected to the BV11 instead of the 4 I had so far connected to the BV5 :-)
By the way, before ordering this new TV I contemplated getting a second life BV9 - but it's not only hard to find a MK IV / V ... it ended up feeling like looking for kit that'll rather sooner than later be outdated entirely.
I do have an additional question for the Forum: will I have to buy the original B&O 3D glasses or can I actually use Samsung ones?
Will let you guys know more about the 11-55 once it arrives.
Congrats on your decision and purchase !
We look forward to hearing your many tales of enjoyment.
Thanks for the compliment, elephant :)
I haven't had a chance to take a pic of the Media Player UI yet -- it is very simplistic in the B&O style, a total opposite to - say - Plex Media Player on AppleTV.
Determining from your later comments, I assume you've already had the chance to see what the the BV11 Home Media looks like?
KMA
B&O product history since 1991: Ridiculously long to list in a signature.
Following this review and a visit to B&O LIverpool, I have ordered a 40" BV11 on a motorised wall bracket. It will fit fairly precisely onto a section of wall with an internal corner projection in our living room. Opted for the built-in hard disk, as this also has a satellite receiver in the same module. I really like the new Beo4 with joystick/toggle.
The BV11 will replace a BV5, so just like 'mor' above the BV5 and BC2 will be moving into a bedroom (a rather small bedroom/ office it has to be said, that will suddenly take on the appearance of a private cinema!)
The BV5 currently sits at an angle across the corner (and before we had the stand cabinet for it, had all the STBs stacked behind it). Looking forward to just having the TV on the wall with no other clutter!
Next job is planning the hidden cable routes!
Graham
The glasses are indeed extra and need to be ordered separately, the list price is 150 euros. You'll probably end up paying less, though, especially if you've just purchased the BV11 or get the glasses bundled in the same deal. I got a discount on mine.
Cheers back at ya :)

I'm looking forward to hearing your impressions of the 55", and perhaps seeing a pic of your setup with 6 (!) BeoLab 8000s. With the new audio capabilities of BV11, you can set up pretty interesting listening scenarios (and optimal positions) with 6 speakers + BV11's speakers. My advice is to invest some time in the Technical Sound Guide. You will be positively surprised!
Hi Vikinger,
WOW The Bv11 is a wonderful replacement for the AWESOME BV5!!! I remember when the BV5 was launched, I was at Art College at the time and it was the same price as my brand new MINI Cooper :)
Liverpool is great - I worked at JUICE FM down Fleet Street for a while and was lucky enough to live on Albert Dock. Super friendly city :)
Damn KMA, I was hoping for another amazing review from you :) :) :) :) such a nice read! YOU SHOULD be in the next BANG&OLUFSEN catalogue. It's about time they put people back in their catalogues as they rather lack soul at the moment. COME ON B&O LET'S HAVE SOME BEOWORLDERS IN YOUR FUTURE CATALOGUES!!!

Thanks for the implied promise of the UI
I have seen the poor UI of the V1, but only had a brief demo of the BV11 that showed the non-functional Apps (the stores network was down) and none of the home media section ... hence the desire to see yours, especially as you had taken the trouble to have it catalogued via PLEX

It is the same as on the V1. Perhaps without the strange B&O CD-cover but otherwise exactly the same. At least when I looked at it at my retailer.

So PLEX rools
Oh for the days of a beogram, an LP cover leaning against the player - even better reading the cover notes as each song plays - sipping scotch, smoking a cigar ... I am starting to become Soren !!
Yeah well I dont think the interface is good but it do work. They could have made it way better. And made an iPhone app but they confuse everything. They need someone like me who can actually think from a user perspective =)
Recently bought a BV11-46 and in general I'm very pleased with it. I mainly own MKV files on a Synology NAS which is DLNA/UPnP compliant, in general it plays MKV files OK. There are only 3 issues with playing MKV files:1. External subtitles are not supported2. Internal subtitles are shown to small on the screen3. MKV with 3D side-by-side format don't play. The screen shows the 2 3D images side by side but there is no way of overlapping the 2 images by going through the 3D settings and then choosing 3D side-by-side.I also own a BV-7-55 and this model has no problem with playing a MKV 3D side-by-side movie, although I manually have the change the settings on the BV to 3D side-by-side.
I got in touch with customer care in Denmark and got this typical "ignore customers as much as possible" answer from them:
We are pleased to inform you that Synology will work with BeoVision 11. However, we offer no support for .srt or .sub files. As to 2D side-by-side formation, we have to say that Mediaplayer does not support 3D, as this is how it is specified. However, we have passed your feedback on to the responsible department, and we shall return to you in case updates in these areas come up. Kind regards,Bang & Olufsen a/s
Hello all!
I just bought my first Bang & Olufsen system
My choice was clear from the first time i got a sneakpeak on the BV11.. I loved the design on BV10, but had some doubt's since the picture on my old tv(Sony HX925) was better... But when i saw the BV11 i just fell in love!
I went for the 46" with harddrive, beo6, blue fret and black/silver cabinet
As you can see on the picture i combined it with a pair of Beolab 9's, this was actually a bet, because i didn't get a chance to hear them before they actually stood in my bedroom.. At first i was thrilled about the sound of the speaker in the BV11 and i had the same experience as KMA, until i got the BL9's plugged in! They sound absolutely gorgeous!
Although i love my new toy, i have to say i'm a bit disappointed in the "service" i got, well it wasn't as i expected.. At first they forgot the fret to the BV11 and he coundn't configure my beo6 at home so i had to drive to the store to get my fret and remote.. And they got me the wrong color fret... When i got home i found that the Beo6 remote don't work with this tv, so today i went back and they configured the remote as it was a BV10, so i don't have direct access to the harddrive, smart-tv hub or the mediaserver.... However i was told that B&O was working on this, since it didn't work for them either when the dealer spoke to them on the phone.
Boom! Now that's a first post for you!
Your new setup looks amazing.
I have to say that is pretty shocking regarding the dire service you have experienced. Where are you based? It would be handy to give readers sufficient info so that they avoid that dealer as it is just unacceptable imo.
Some dealers/shops are just absolutely clueless, have an air of arrogance when you walk in for the first time, looking at you as though you are not worthy. How on earth do they expect referrals, recommendations and repeat custom?
Other dealers are the complete opposite. Guess which ones are likely to do well/survive...
Part of the "B&O Tax" is paying for top quality service. Quite clearly you haven't had the best experience. If it were me I would tell them to collect the lot and give me an immediate refund, then find a dealer that you are confident in, as it can be a long term relationship.
But on a brighter note, congrats on your new setup. It looks great.

selliah1992:
BOOM BOOM with the BL 9s
Congratulations on your first post, your first B&O - and such great choices.
Welcome to Beoworld, welcome to B&O.
Like Beoundies, I am sad that the experience was not perfect for you -- but once it is all settled down these 3 days will fade as you experience days, weeks, months, years and hopefully decades of enjoyment !
While BVs may come and go - I think you will still be enjoying the BL 9s some ten years from now.
@selliah1992, Great system!
Might I recommend that you get hold of a Beo4 (newest version with media button, preferably) remote and just use that (and get a refund on the Beo6). Cannot imagine the Beo6 working better than the 4 when you start playing with all the speaker and video options. And when there are problems you don't have to wait for programming support, you can add commands to your heart's content.
Wonderful system!!!
I was thinking the same as Symmes.
Take back that dire Beo6 and use the Beo4 and with the money left over, you could buy an iPad Mini and use the App - I would have thought that was a far easier to use/more reliable option! Plus of course, you can stream your entire iTunes from it :)
Very nice piece of art!
