Hi All,

I have a BV 8-32 and am very happy with it. I daily enjoy the richness of colour and sound it produces just by itself. As its only a 32 inch unit and we have a compact space where the tv sits , any larger 40+ inch tv is overkill for us.

The 8-32 is 1366x768 720p HD, and some people say that you need 46+ inch size before you can really see HD coming into its own, what are peoples thoughts on whether keeping a 720p tv is practical given advances in technology, or whether 720p is a long term usable resolution? My thinking is yes it is a long term proposition, as long as you dont crave blu ray level quality for everything.

We arent avid tv fans, but *do* appreciate quality - hence B&O

I'm sure people have thoughts on the matter.

I think you have answewred your own question. Apart from blu-ray, most HD is going to be 720 anyway so I am sure you and your 8-32 will be very happy together.

I confess to not being a great HD fan but did see a BV7-55 at the dealer playing a blu-ray version of avatar and have to confess to being rather impressed!!

Peter has made a good point.

I too visit dealers and drool over what I could have ... after I won (NOT) this weeks $100M lotto draw Big Smile

I have a BV8-32 like you, but also a BV8-40 .... so some thoughts:

  • the BV8-40 is better than the BV8-32 for some good reasons and some silly reasons Smile
  1. It has the cinema curtain effect on start up and standby
  2. half way through the start up is displays a subtle gray "BANG & OLUFSEN" label of the black screen
  3. it supports surround sound
  4. it has more HDMI inputs
  5. it has more PUC outputs
  6. the larger screen does make a difference even though our viewing distance is borderline for 720P versus 1080P
  7. the sound from the larger speaker is different (not necessarily better! I am very much in two minds)

Hi all

Thanks for the great answers. PS - I had the option of buying a 7-40 Mk III screen for not much but the Minister for the Interior decided it was too big for the lounge room ( which is huge ) .....I cried myself to sleep.....

Yes we are very happy with the 8-32, its a great tv and the sound is very good. I must admit not having a surround option irks me as as not having a few other features as well. This is another sore point with the 7-40 issue. I do have a Pioneer reference amp running some RL 45s which sound great, but want to upgrade to some BL 8000s. Currently I use the centre speaker setting  to run the RLs in addition to the tv on board speakers.

As we will never have a large 46" + screen, I think the BV8-32 will be fine.

As a side issue - I'm just wondering if I'm one of the few ( or many ?? ) where the women-folk resist a decent size tv.Its not like I'm asking for a whole wall projector setup.

Thoughts?

Elephant - we're in Canberra. Alas....no B&O dealers.....

The "real" problem is ... that when she is watching a tear-jerker, listening to the words and music, and crying she can't see anything anyway ... so yes, size doesn't matter Big Smile

The recently launched YouView boxes that BT are supplying to customers to stream HD are factory set at 1080. A friend of mine has a BeoVision7 32" and couldn't get it to work. When he called BT for technical assistance he was told that the box cannot use 720 resolution. He had to return the box.

I was in Canberra last week! It's such a pretty city....

The Beovision 8-32 is a great TV, and excellent value for money IMHO

In Australia, I think 720P will suffice for quite some time, especially with a 32 inch screen.

My wife doesn't mind what TV we have, as long as she knows how to use it! What she doesn't know yet is that I'm thinking of switching from a BV7-32 to a BV8-40!!Wink

Opman, Jonathan - good points. Thanks.

Yeah I just wonder how people who have monster tvs manage to sweet talk the wife/girlfriend into it......maybe they like sport just as much?

I had considered bribery - "here...treat yourself to a weekend spa retreat..."...and then ship in the new tv while shes out.....Laughing

Dont think it would go down that well.

Yes I'd agree the tear-jerkers are usually viewed through a pile of tissues.........he he......Whistle

Canberra is 3 hours from the ski fields, so its all good......but its a tough drive back after a day on the piste.....

Elephant - have you considered a retractable screen & projector set up? That way its only seen when its running......

Indeed I have, and I know exactly where in either of the two rooms where it could go.

Ideally the screen would retract into the ceiling ... and that amount of havoc to plaster, paint, etc is one major obstacle.

The Beolab 5 surround sound set up is the other "say another word and I will kill you" look.

One of the reasons I really loved the BV7 was the capability to manage the two viewing orientations and associated sound stages ...

Jonathan !! what are you thinking of ! and congrats on the eBay sale of the 8000 ... I was watching them as the climb from "this is a steal" to "noooot this year" range.

Well I have a pleasing ( I think ) update.  My better half has asked I refrain from purchasing until works on the house are finished off - then its an open cheque book.  Now there are are few caveats in all this - one , that we spend umpteen $1000s to gut & rebuild two bathrooms ( which we did agree to some time back ), two - that the works will be subject to some form of aesthetic oversight.  Hmmmm.....B&O gear is so nice to look at, I can only think she means screen size....  ;-)

So now that I have some form of concession on the table, I plan to keep up the pressure. ...Laughing

Elephant -  I could advocate the ""do it while shes visiting her mother/girlfriend one weekend" and be done with it. Such an approach has questionable impact on household harmony, however.....I guess at this point you find what your relationship is made of.....he he

My wife also knows I can rip down whole walls and repair them seamlessly without any hint /clues of what has transpired which is why shes happy for me to do work on walls etc - perhaps showing her some examples of gyprock/dry wall repairs might calm her concerns. The other point is that you have to crack eggs to make omlettes. Possibly too if the screen when fully retracted up into the roof was slightly higher up into the roof so you have a clean line of plaster around the screen cavity, rather than the metal edge of a fully retracted screen showing against the ceiling, it might help?

What is the problem with the BL5s?

Hi Ed, I was pretty satisfied with the price I got. $2k is not a stupid price, but not too low either! The buyer is very happy, and they're going to a nice home next to a Beocenter 9300 Yes - thumbs up
