ARCHIVED FORUM -- March 2012 to February 2022READ ONLY FORUM
This is the second Archived Forum which was active between 1st March 2012 and 23rd February 2022
I fully understand that the main focus of this forum is so solve real problems not abstract ones. However perhaps you B&O mavens might make an exception just this once.
As you probably know my BeoCenter 9000 has a failing CD function capacitor that caused the original owner to toss it in the trash. His loss my gain.
You may also recall that this BeoCenter is most unforgiving of lack of regular CD play. So that being a given I use this BeoCenter daily to good results.
Basically the CD player will play any CD I wish with regular use.
This evening the CD player surprised me by refusing to play a CD. All my usual tricks failed to produce positive results.
Then I got an idea. The CD player “likes” my Il Divo CD so I tried it and no problem. I let it play three tracks and then tried the Abba Movie Soundtrack that the CD player so stubbornly refused to play and like magic, it played. Any track any time, no issue.
Any idea why this is?

Sounds familiar. My BC4500 is alike sometimes, not for a looongtime now. But when it has this moment, it is usually cured with normal lenght(~45min) well pressed CD. Refusing has allways been caused by long(~75+min) CDs or homeburned.
Maybe those overlong CDs drive mechanics to somewhere to near limit/edge, so something like that?

I don't know and I don't care!
Why not just change C2103 and have done with it. It is not rocket science and It will prevent this story from polluting the forum any longer!!!!!
Regards Graham
I imagine the easier to play CD allowed the dodgy component to warm up and this changed its characteristics so it could manage the challenge. Quite happy to consider the theoretical here!!

I havent care either, it's happens so rarely nowdays, and that famous C2103 has been changed + whole machine cleaned trought.
Graham,
Well that was an honest answer.
It was merely an intellectual question, something to stimulate the little grey cells, nothing more. I was actually quite intrigued how or why a CD player “chooses” which CD it will play and when.
Now thanks to Peter, I have the answer. Now that it has been explained to me, I can’t imagine why I didn’t think of this myself. But the point is I didn’t.

Thank you Peter for enlightening me. In spite of the obvious logic of your answer I had been mystified by the erratic behavior of the BeoCenter 9000.
You answered what may have been an insipid question but in this or any other forum I believe it is most important that members feel free to ask their questions without fear of ridicule. As such, your response is most appreciated.

I wouldn't go that far, but its a lot more interesting discussing B&O CD players, than the fruit companies different items or light dimmers.
Collecting Vintage B&O is not a hobby, its a lifestyle.
I totally agree on that last thing! You are not allowed to post a link to your B&O related ebay listings, but there's no problem with discussing Apple products totally unrelated to the BeoPlay-range on a B&O Forum...

There is in the upper right corner, when you open the thread, five stars, 1 is poor and 5 excellent, I just gave it 3 stars and these should show beside the thread in #forums#

I didn’t know we would be rated on our threads. Had I known, I would have attempted to be a bit more creative in my writing. Personally I wouldn’t have given this thread on mine a 5 star either, but I am more than happy with the 3 star.

Easy to understand - no "business" allowed on the site, but you have "freedom of religion" ...
The focal point here is I posed a question that I very much wanted the answer to and this is the place to find the answers to Bang & Olufsen questions. I asked a question and it was answered and that is much appreciated.
The hard reality is we all have various B&O products in different stages of electronic decay. As such I was both intrigued and perplexed by my BeoCenter 9000 suddenly refusing to play a CD after playing one after the other with no problem for months.
Peter’s clever answer took the mystery out of why my BeoCenter 9000 behaves the way it does. It also gives me a remedy for future hiccups until I ultimately solve the problem by replacing the failing capacitor.

The only thread that would get a 5 star from me, would be a perfect restore of a B&O vintage item, That is what this forum is about, all the rest is very nice small talk.

And then the next question comes to mind: What's the difference between putting an item up for sale in the 'For Sale And Wanted' section, and posting a link to your B&O related ebay listing in the 'For Sale And Wanted' section?
There hasn't been any input from any of the moderators yet...
I don't really moderate the for sale section but the reason we don't allow links to eBay on the general forum is so the forum does not become a place simply to advertise links to eBay. Clearly seeing the amount of items for sale and the fact that this is the busiest B&O forum, I would imagine unscrupulous dealers would soon find their way here! We try to keep advertising down - anyone who remembers the pre-Beoworld days will understand why!
On linking within the for sale areas, I am completely unaware of the rules and there are no posting guidelines listed. I will consult and make sure guidelines are posted as soon as possible!
On the Apple subjects, the problem we have here is that B&O have embraced Apple products and a considerable amount of overlap exists. I personally would rather see Apple products being discussed in the Mac area but, being a realist, accept that we get a fair amount of overflow. The topic seems to generate very strong views both for and against so I feel a definitive ruling would be bound to alienate a substantial number of members!
Thanks for your reply, Peter! It's very appreciated.
I see your point about the dealers, I was just trying to make a point regarding the abundance of Apple related threads vs. the fact that you are not allowed to post a single link to your B&O related ebay listing: One type of abundance is allowed but the other one isn't... Maybe it could be allowed to post a link to your ebay listing, but only after you've had your item for sale on BeoWorld for a certain amount of time? That's how it usually worked on the archived forum as far as I remember.
But I'm glad that you will take care of the guidelines - I've wondered a few times why a post was edited by a moderator without giving any reason and without any place on the site where you might could find an explanation.
Basically, the rules from the archived forum are still unchanged and valid and those are indeed theones we use when moderating. They ought to be moved forward a bit I agree, to be more visible.Having said that, you are a very decent and well-behaved crowd, leaving us very little to moderate.
Martin
Peter,
It is entirely possible that I misunderstood your comment about warming up the CD player, but in any case, it makes perfect sense.
That said, my particular BeoCenter CD player can be difficult to “warm-up.” Specifically if the CD player “likes” say a Mozart CD but not a Chopin CD, I have to play the Mozart CD first, to warm-up the CD player prior to playing the Chopin CD.
This is cumbersome and pushes me towards making the effort to take apart this BeoCenter to get Martin the code he needs in order to replace the failing capacitor.
The above point notwithstanding, I decided to try something else, perhaps what you had in mind in the first place, but none the less, I decided to turn the BeoCenter on and just let it sit idle.
Like a miracle it WORKED and with the entire BeoCenter “warmed-up” the CD player will play any CD in my CD library.
So if anyone is having a similar problem with a CD player, warming-up the system, even with the CD player idle does the trick. (At least for awhile.)
Piaf:Like a miracle it WORKED and with the entire BeoCenter “warmed-up” the CD player will play any CD in my CD library.
As you said, it will work for a while, but something is wrong, we have discussed this before, if something does not work like it should its better to get it fixed right away, before more failures comes, and maybe make a repair more expensive or in the worst case irreparable.
Jeff, excuse me, but you seams to enjoy playing some kind of Russian roulette with your equipment, like lets see how long I can torture these poor things. I just repaired my CD50 motor, The CD50 started like yours with small failures and I stopped using it until I found the failure. I know you have problems to get repairs made, but thats not a reason to drive your equipment beyond usable before you do something. I´m sorry, I tell you this as a forum friend, so please dont kill the messenger
I must agree with Søren. And don't get me wrong, Jeff - but we've heard all about this and your Beomaster 2400 and 4400 before. It's not that we don't want to hear about B&O problems and there's nothing we enjoy more than suggest repairs and fixesand get the things back on track.Your experimenting with the units and symptoms is fine as such but going on speculating every time afault develops or gets a little worse, experimenting to find out how bad is has become today compared to yesterdaywon't help anything.
Your CD player will most likely need new capacitors in the servo board. It's the first placeto start, anyways, and not an expensive repair.Capacitors start aging the day they are produced, they will work in a circuit for only so much time andeventually get to a point where the circuit becomes unstabile.Things start to act up. Functions become sluggish or intermittent, sound reproduction and general satisfaction gets below par.It will only get worse. Not better. It will happen gradually and things like temperature, airs moisture, mains voltageand similar may cause the thing to (sort of) work some days and not others.Tomorrow or the next day it won't play the CDs it did today and in a handful of weeks it won't play anything.Get the things fixed.
Have to agree with Soren and Martin here. Although warming the machine up is clearly a temporary fix, it is destined to fail eventually.
My Beocenter 9000 dsplayed exactly the same symptons as are being described in this thread. This was around 10 years ago.
I found that the unit would play any CD offered if I stood the Beocenter on its back edge for half a hour before putting the CD in place!
This worked for a couple of weeks until I found that I also had to drink a double vodka and breath the fumes into the CD compartment!
Then I found that it would only work if I also gently massaged the CD between the breasts of a nubile young woman before placing it in the machine!
Eventually, I got fed up with this performance, before I could listen to my Abba CD, that I decided to ............replace C2103, when the problem went away!!!!!!!
Hooray!!!!! but please dont tell the nubile young woman as I was rather enjoying that bit!!
Graham, please dont publish these things, I always have a Rum and coke with a lot of ice beside my amps when playing, I tell my wife, for cooling the air intakes. If she read this, maybe she starts thinking.
ABBA - really ?How funny.I still recall that rainy evening in Brighton when ABBA won the song contest. Björns pants were so tight hehad to stand up in the bus all the way to the event. His wife very pregnant so she was standing too. That is, I was in Copenhagen, it wasn't raining here and, obviously, I was not on the bus but I've been a fan ever since.Arrival has always been my favourite album. It wasn't Arrival it wouldn't play, was it Graham ?That would indeed give us something to think about.
BTW thanks for the valueable tips and tricks on keeping the CD player working.People ask me about all sorts of strange issues every day so definitely worth keeping for future reference.
Warning: The above lines can contain a hint of friendly irony.
Just yesterday I was recording my 45s to tape, between these I found some ABBA, Cassandra, The day before you came, Super trouper, The Piper, except for Super Trouper not to offen heard on the radio. I will continue recording 45s today, some 250 to go, there must be some more ABBA in there.
BTW the 45s do not enter in the CD50

Hi Søren, Martin, and Peter,
Not to worry as I have no reason or interest in shooting the messenger. From your collective points of view when one has an ailing electronic device you simply fix it and I certainly agree.
Further I would like to take this opportunity that thank all three of you (and everyone else for that matter) for your patience with me. I rather imagine seeing a post from me was often seen as, “Oh not him again.”
Guys for reasons of no interest to this forum I find myself in an unenviable position and as a result I purchased the 4400 as a cheer-up/birthday gift. Well that didn’t work out as planned.
Then the 4500 gave its notice, which was completely unexpected. The gift of a damaged BeoCenter was just icing on the cake, so to speak.
The end result I found myself surrounded by failing electronic gems and the only pleasure I could get from them was coaching them into just a semblance of what had been their former glory. This was seen by Søren as playing Russian roulette…. how embarrassing.
Please know I am not angry, far from it, just humiliated by the position I find myself in. (This is entirely my own fault as I have no one else to blame.)
If it makes anyone feel any better, before reading any of these posts, I decided last night that I had to open up the BeoCenter and get Martin the number he needs to replace the capacitor. (This repair is well within my means.)

Hello Martin,
My ever so patient friend.
At least I had the decency to vary the questions, but none the less, redundant they are.
I am just about to open up the BeoCenter and find that part number you wanted. I am sure the folks at BeoWorld will welcome the change in posting with an “I just installed Martin’s capacitor and the problem is solved.”
When it happens, I will post just that.
