I've just purchased a well-taken-care-of BC 9500.  Unfortunately, the tape deck function didn't survive the trip across the Rocky Mountains.  The diminutive package deliverer struggled with the large 'FRAGILE" package and left it at our door with the a loud thump.  *sigh*

The door to the tape function opens and accepts the cassette tape.  When "Tape 1" is then pressed, (or "A. Tape" on the remote)  you can hear a mechanism engage.  However, the capstans don't spin.  I can't see if the tape head rises to meet the tape.

Any ideas what could cause this?  I'm probably not handy enough to repair, but I'd like to suggest some likely causes to the repair guy when I take it in.

A second question, less significant than the tape issue in the original post.  Is there way to set a default volume level for the unit?  When it turns on from standby and plays a source, it's much louder than I'd prefer.  I have a Beo4 remote, if that's helpful.

The belts have to be replaced. The belts for the doors may got weak as well. No serious fault!

And yes, the entire sound setting can be programmed. It will be chosen when switched on and by "reset". Just adjust as you like it to be and then touch  "programming" then "sound" then "store".

Thank you, ProGram.  Belts were my first thought as well, so I'll suggest that to the repair guy as a starting point.  My fingers are crossed that it's that simple.

Also, thanks for pointer on setting the default volume.  I'll try it out.
