I have an old HDR 1 with movies on it. How can I copy these into my PC?

Welcome to Beoworld!

The best way may be to remove the HDR1's hard-drive, connect this to a PC using appropriate cables and then extract the files.

Edit:  But according to this thread a PC may not be able to read the files because the disc is formatted in a non-standard way: https://archivedarchivedforum2.beoworld.org/forums/p/11517/86154.aspx

Perhaps you should use something like this, although the quality may not be great: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Video-2-PC-Capture-Windows-Camcorder-transfer/dp/B0049BE3TA/ref=pd_lpo_vtph_tr_t_2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=4GVD838601CCAKFMX9E4
