Hi

This is probably a very stupid question.

Can the BLGW recognise each ML device on the masterlink and send triggers to them?

I have a BS9000 + BM/BS5 + NL/ML set to video master

Map video sources to newer NL music sources...

I would like to use Essence remote to send Light Commands and then trigger BL3500s in that room...

I have 8 BL3500 that I want to identify in the BLGW...

The BL3500 can be controlled by the BLGW, but it must have software vision 3.3 or later to forward LIGHT/CONTROL commands to the BLGW. I believe that you also must key in the correct button sequence on the BL3500 to activate LIGHT/CONTROL forwarding. A few years ago, my dealer told me that the part was no longer available to update my (2) BL3500 speakers. I found that I preferred installing Lutron RadioRa2 keypads anyway. It's challenging to remember what you've mapped to the Essence wall remote in LIGHT mode. I DO, however, use an Essence wall remote in IR mode to send RADIO and CD commands to the BL3500 to play music from my BeoSound Moment through the BL3500.

To check the software version fo the BL3500, with the BL3500 in standby press on your remote MENU, then 0, then 0 then PLAY.

Sadly, if the BL3500 is not software version 3.3, it needs a PCB replacement, which my dealer has told me is no longer available.

This works for me!

All the BL3500s will be placed high. I will have some wall mounted essence remotes close by next to Lutron wall switches and some on the grey slate to walk about with...

Are the buttons on the essence remote mappable?

What are the default commands in IR mode? Like what do the 4 buttons do in IR mode? And Can they be different to short press or long press?

Can the volume wheel be used to control the BL3500 volume?...

Sorry for all the questions. I have not tested any of this yet...

There's a table on the beointegration site that shows how essence remote buttons are mapped according to different modes. For audio IR purposes, you just have the following:

short press play = RADIO

long press play = CD

left and right arrow buttons advance to the next/previous track or radio station.

You can't, however, remap the buttons. This is a bit unfortunate because you usually briefly hear the RADIO source until the Essence remote detects the long-press to trigger CD. Don't get me started on my rant about how annoying it is that the RADIO/Tune-in source on B&O is soooo much louder than the other sources!

The volume wheel can be used to control the BL3500 volume. Since it's just battery-powered, I have the Essence remote on the wall such that I can reach outside of the shower to adjust the volume and move through tracks.

The table on the beointegration site will show you how to change the mode of the Essence remote. You can find it under "technical inspiration" in the knowledge base section.

So my understanding of the essence remote is the keys cannot be mapped to what you want them to be?

In Beo4 IR mode, I can only trigger radio, CD, next, previous and volume...

That is correct. You also have standby with a short press and standby all with a long press.

If you're fortunate enough to have version 3.3 of the BL3500 to be able to transmit LIGHT/CONTROL commands to the BLGW, however, you can map the keys to trigger any macros with the Essence remote in LIGHT mode.

I know that some people have used BeoLink Actives (without speakers) in such rooms for the sole purpose of transmitting LIGHT/CONTROL commands to the BLGW.

Another solution is if you have NL/ML converters close enough to such rooms to run the NL/ML IR eye into that room.

This could work...

I have 3 NL/ML converters in the server room so I can wire 3 IRs around the house through data points and patch them into the converters?

The IRs can be placed in rooms where we chill more and where the BL3500 is not software 3.3

Do you know the maximum cable length between the NL/ML and IR?

According to the 186 page BeoLink Handbook, Ver. 1.9, you can go up to 100 meters. Wow! You can find the BeoLink Handbook on the BeoIntegration site. See pages 119 and 99. This is a very useful reference to have.

yes, here! Smile in two rooms

but the software on beolink actve must be 1.6 or above.

here you find the summary of the software to transmit the light/control commands.

I just love the look of the essence remote. But if it’s not going to play happy easily then I don’t want to complicate things...

This might work better than installing IRs...

Can the BLGW send triggers to ALL software versions of the 3500?...

Yes. The BLGW can control any BL3500. It's just that only version 3.3 or higher of the BL3500 can send LIGHT/CONTROL commands through ML to the BLGW.

Is your NL/ML the Audiomaster?

And you’ve mapped Radio and CD commands to point to the BS Moment?...

Correct. I have a BeoVision 10 in the master bedroom set as Videomaster with an NL/ML set as AudioMaster. I have two BeoSound Moments: one in the bedroom using the BV10's speakers and another in the living room using the BeoSystem 4's speakers. On the NL/ML that is set as Audiomaster, I can freely map any of my NL sources to the masterlink audio source buttons. So, I could actually connect, for example, MUSIC from one BeoSound Moment to CD and map MUSIC from the other BeoSound Moment to RADIO. I currently have a BeoGram 9000 turntable connected on another NL/ML converter via a BeoMaster 5500 and have the turntable mapped as N.RADIO (PHONO on some remotes).

So I guess you could see this as having quite a lot of flexibility to map sources to be able to respond to the Essence Remote. It's just that you have to do the mapping on the NL/ML Converter as the Essence remote is fixed at RADIO and CD as sources it can control.

From the bathrooms with BL3500 speakers, I also have Beo4 remotes on the walls. With the Beo4 I can control all of the following that have been mapped to ML audio source commands via the NL/ML Converter that is set as AudioMaster:

RADIO = BeoSound Moment Bedroom TuneIn

A.MEM = BeoSound Moment Living Room MUSIC

CD = BeoSound Moment Bedroom MUSIC

A.AUX =  BeoSound Moment Living Room TuneIn

N.RADIO = BeoMaster 5500's BeoGram 9500 turntable

N.MUSIC = BeoSound 5's ripped CD Library

I also have Lutron Keypads on the walls that have buttons for the following:

Join (Really more for future use if I later replace the 3500 with a BeoSound 35 -- since ML doesn't work with JOIN)

Radio

Music

CD (I could map this to trigger either the Living Room Moment's MUSIC or the BeoSound 5's ripped CD library as I see fit)

Turntable

Off

Don't forget that you can take advantage of fully controlling the BeoGram turntable (PLAY, STOP, BACK, FORWARD) when connecting it with an NL/ML Converter!

You’ve done some mad work in your setup.

I can’t wait to try all of this.

I’ve ordered 10 button keypads for every wall switch with raise/lower so one side of 5 buttons can be all to do with the B&O in the desired area of the house.

I believe I can only have up to 16 devices on a Masterlink.

At the moment, I’m looking at BS900 + BS5 + 10 BL3500

It’s very hard to find them in 3.3

I just bought 2 more today lol...

Have you seen my thread in the home automation forum where I posted some photos of my backlit, engraved Radio Ra2 keypads?

Remember that you can join more ML devices by using the NL/ML Converters. For example, I have one converter (the AudioMaster ML converter) as the converter connected to the BeoVision 10 Videomaster in order to join NL sources to the ML network. I have another converter for the BeoMaster 5/BeoGram 9500, and I have another converter for the BeoSound 5. I have a fourth converter that I'll use to either connect my BeoCenter 2 or BeoSystem 4500. Since only the NL/ML Converter that is set as AudioMaster is connected to the "main" ML network that is connected to the BLGW, the other B&O audio systems would not count against the ML limit. They are all bridged using the NL network. This could be ideal for you. You can keep buying more ML B&O products!

Those BeoLab 3500s are so well-priced these days -- and they look nice and discreet around the home. Have you looked into getting any BeoLab 2000s? Those can be found even cheaper. Great to stick in a kitchen corner.

I was thinking this topology would work as each NL/ML converter is a single node on the network and the commands would not interfere in the BLGW as long as the command is being sent to the correct converter/node...

I haven’t seen that other thread on the backlit buttons. I’ve seen the tabletop remotes...

Have you tried using the converter as both Audio and Video master?

I wouldn’t be able to do this on the BS9000 masterlink as it can only be the audiomaster.

Could I put a BS4 in slave mode and have a converter as audio and video master on that masterlink?

I'm pretty sure that I added photos of the backlit, engraved wall keypads later on in the thread. If not, I'll try to upload some later. It's annoying how you can't upload photos to the forum from a mac. I have to got to app on an iOS device to upload photos.
