Would it be possible to remove the icepower amplifier from a Beolab 7.4, making it a passive speaker?

The reason is that I would like to run it of a standard 5.1 surround amplifier. That way there would not be any need for an expensive amplifier with preamp outputs.

Even if you separate the internal power amplifiers, I wonder how much of the low-level processing is eq.

Similarly, I’ve always wondered what BL8000s would sound like without eq Big Smile

From the service manual it looks like the sound processing is done before the amps.

Right, so how do you think you could mimic it? Is your AV receiver that sophisticated?

Don’t have a receiver.

Just researching possibilities. Smile

Would this unit from Steve solve the problem? https://soundsheavenly.com/line-in-connection/33-power-amplifier-to-beolab-line-in-attenuated-convertor-kit.html

That is what usually is recommended in such cases.

Of course you could rip out all the electronics.

You'll just need to know the crossover frequencies of the speaker chassis inside the Beolab 7.4 and a passive frequency crossover with matching frequencies that you can install in the 7.4 housing. Than you can use it with every external amplifier.

I guess it will be very interesting to listen for the differences of the passive version and the B&O active version.

How would one duplicate a crossover?

I recommend this too. That way you can fully preserve the original sound. Plus, as the loudspeaker relies on ABL for low-end extension, you would lose a significant amount of bass in an active to passive conversion.

How would one duplicate a crossover?

- You can search if a crossover with the required crossover frequencies is available as a ready built component

- you can build one yourself or let somebody build one for you.

If you use a separate amplifier for your passive speakers you can also have a look at the professional speaker management speakers, starting with a cheap one like the Behringer DCX2496. There you can adjust everything you like with many many parameters.

Hi Leo,

If your receiver doesn't have pre-out sockets fitted, then there is no need to remove the amplifiers from the Beolab 7-4 speaker.  Instead, please use this attenuator on the speaker terminals of the receiver to safely reduce the output levels (this effectively adds external pre-out sockets to any receiver):-

As the Beolab 7-4 speaker doesn't have a Line input option, it also needs a powered cable to generate the trigger signals that would normally be sent from a B&O television:-

Kind regards, Steve.
