Hey,
Thread about M70 began here: https://archivedforum2.beoworld.org/forums/t/34886.aspx . To not mix in threads I decided to put it here.
I bought my Beovox M70 , I did not expect much from the state though they played nice. After buying and the first hours in the house spent listening, I decided to look at them more. They are from one pair (matching serial numbers)
The boxes are not damaged :
Speakers and suspensions look good without abrasions, dents and holes in the paper:
The grilles are whole and not broken, although they have small abrasions on one:
and inside....
Crossovers - no repairs, no visible signs of damage, both the same:
SEAS woofers looks like new, with no problem with terminals:
The same with Peerless uniphase - without problem with magnets.
Now, after these few photos I have questions:
- whether recap is necessary in crossovers ??
- is there any canvas that was covered with grills M70 ?? I only have a new stretchy acoustic material, in Infinity it looked like the original but here it is different and I do not know what the final effect will be.
- whether the acoustic parameters of the box do not change after the insertion of modern cable terminals with latches or screws?
- how to mount the grills, now they are fastened with self-adhesive Velcro, but you can see it and it is not perfect ??
BeO is like a good wine - the older the better...
Hello,
very nice purchase. Ask Martin (Dillen here on forum) also for capacitor kit for this type, he will help you. Woody work (veneere) is well descrided here on beoworld, you will fond IT.
- I am thinking about installing terminals because I have good, thick cables and I have the impression that using DIN does not make sense for these cables.
- On the grilles, I found the Monacor fabric, black but with a thicker pattern.
- And finally capacitors:
Long ago I read an interesting article about using them in crossovers, after that I am a supporter of dry film capacitors, of course everywhere where it can be used because there is limited capacity.
The second thing is that recap is needed in environments exposed to high temperatures like amplifiers, for example.
These are the reasons why I am thinking about recap procedure.
This article is quite well written by Harbeth Audio owner and speakers constructor. If someone wanted to read the whole lecture, I can drop the link.
I restored a pair of M70 not a long time ago. There, you should find restoration tips you are looking for under the Workbench forum.
Looking carefully at one of your woofers, I can see that the red terminal is detached from the speaker housing on the second picture.
If I were you, I would still put all chances on my side and secure all terminals and glue the phase link drivers.
Good luck!
No, the red terminal is not disconnected from the speaker housing. I opened the case and checked again.
However, I decided to change the way of connecting wires. In the garage, from the old Polish loudspeakers "Tonsil Samba 250" unscrew the terminals.
and in the place of the old DIN, I made a new hole.
everything is sealed with silicone, looks good and works as it should.
I wanted to start the fight with the appearance of veneers, but first I dismantled Beomaster and changed the thermal paste to the radiator, because the M70 turned off the Beosystem.
to be continued....
Hmmm ... since the M70 stand in the living room, there is a smell of old age around. The smell was clearer when the housing was opened. I ordered wadding to replace the boxes filling , I hope the smell will disappear
Filling replaced with new ones.
Because listening to music while sitting on the carpet is uncomfortable, and because I do not have stands for the M70, I decided to do something about it.
So I bought 4 m steel profiles
I cut the profiles into pieces:
And I made myself stands. This is how raw it looks, after welding and grinding. Now I'm doing the second one and in the meantime I think how to finish them off.
After 4 hours in the garage, both stands were ready for painting and assembly:
But then, I thought to create something original that would compose to the speakers and the room. The choice fell on brown leather.
And after another 6 hours with a needle in my hand... I made this :
Following the blog ...
Today I received a package with fabric on the grill and pins:
The fabric looks pretty good with the texture at the original.
I removed the old one and put a new material:
Even though it's a bit darker it looks really good:
I also installed the pins for the grill assembly:
Tomorrow I will polish wood and aluminum. I paint the front under the grill with black paint.
This is the last day of work, then just listen and listen and listen ...
To clean the rosewood I used the 3M Scotch Brite Scouring Pad on a random orbital sander. Any unevenness and discoloration have been removed.
After all, I put several layers of beeswax on the prepared veneer.
The aluminum frame was polished, and the fronts under the mask were painted black.
And here is the end result:
I am really proud of them, now they not only sound wonderful but also look great.
By the way ... I do not know how it is in the original but in my stands I made adjusting the inclination on the screw.
Thanks.
In addition to the sound and appearance, there is one more important reason for the renovation.
M70 in the living room gave an unpleasant odor in the air. Confusion of the old basement with the composition of waste paper. Like a warehouse with old, damaged books.
To eliminate it, I had to replace the filling, vacuum the inside of the boxes, change the material for the grill, beeswax gave the whole a pleasant natural aroma.
Ok. Now I have M70 in good condition... but I can buy M75 looks like new. Is it beter then M70?? I know it's different but on plus or minus??
I have meanwhile listened to many B&O speakers and the M75 is my favorite. Sensational speaker without a weakness. Built for bass, they really excel in mids and highs. Haven't heard M70s, though. Still, I have a hard time imagining that they can be better. The top of the line Beovoxes from that time were all not that different in sound, but M75s/M100s have a distinguished reputation. In my view the best sounding B&O speakers below Beolab 50/90/5.
I wouldn't recap M75s by the way if they are still working. You will invest money and chances are that sound will deteriorate. If they show clearly audible signs of wear, that's a different story. Not sure how usual that is, though.
Cheers
I have never listed to M75's but I do have a pair of M100's and M70's. To my ear the M70's sound better. The base is much tighter on the M70's. I also prefer the look of the 70's on their tulip stands.
A month after the renovation of the veneer, there were no gloss spots. Probably the wax came quite into the wood. After re-applying the wax, the gloss stays on the whole surface for another month without any changes or discoloration.
And finally I know what "Uni-Phase" is.

Hi,
I use teck oil on all my B&O woodwork. That gives a factory-like satin appearance, very nice.
I use steel wool before oiling.
Jacques
I use beeswax and scotch brite pads as on the first page of this thread.

I may have 2 unless I lost them when I moved house last year. I will look in the garage this weekend.
Thanks!!!
Did you check the kidney glomerular filtration rate, I may be interested in an exchange as my kidneys are nearly 70 years old
Collecting Vintage B&O is not a hobby, its a lifestyle.
If you have one, I can check it

When I need a woofer, my liver is yours ... but now I need midtone by peerless.
By the way, I am a 40-year-old man, but a metabolic age of 27 years. 180 cm tall with a muscular physique, 13 percent fat on the body and viscera without fat . All blood results in the norm, tested regularly, totally free from stimulants and no genetic defects in the family ....
maybe now I can find something faster.

Once again, please help !!!
I can also exchange for Beogram 5000 or 5005.
That’s the phase link. I do not have any spare phase links. I have 2 woofers and 2 dome midrange.
Thanks,
I found a couple in Denmark, I've almost bought it but it's not eBay, it's a local service with ads. I am trying to organize payment and transport.
In the meantime, I am just writing in the thread about Beosystem and Infinity.
I am looking for someone from Denmark who will help me buy Peerless speakers.
What's the problem?
Henrik
Peerless are on the local site. The seller has been wondering for a week how to send it, how send money. I told him he would give me the account number, I will transfer the equivalent in euros plus transport. Then he will send ... but he still thinks and thinks ...
